Having Fun in London for Kids

Is it possible to have fun in London for free? Sure, why not! Be it just a weekend city break or full-blown vacations in London, the capital of England is an amazing tourist destination. From the magnificent Big Ben to the Coca-Cola London Eye, it offers a whole range of fantastic entertainment and things to do. However, with all its splendor, one thing is certain – London is not the cheapest place in the world. This is especially true if you’re exploring it with your kids and you want them to have as much fun as possible. But don’t worry! We’ve prepared a complete guide of Top 10 Free Things To Do in London for Kids. Spend the time of your life without spending a fortune!

Sky Garden

Sky Garden certainly is up there with the most iconic things to do in London, despite being totally free. It can be found on the top three floors of 20 Fenchurch Street and offers a nice choice of restaurants and indoor viewing decks. It is regarded as one of the best vantage points in Central London. In case you had troubles finding the place, this skyscraper is also known under the name of “walkie-talkie” among the locals, due to its unusual shape. It is considered to be among London’s most exclusive social spaces – and it’s hard to disagree with that statement after experiencing the awe-inspiring sights. Keep in mind that it has to be pre-booked (for free) through the website.

Science Museum

We know that kids aren’t THAT fond of museums but bear with us on this one. When looking for free things to do in London for kids, Science Museum is one of the best attractions. In addition to being highly informative and educational, this museum offers a plethora of interactive exhibits which captivate and entertain even the most suborn of children. It spreads over seven floors and features such intriguing displays as the first steam locomotives back from 19th century (Energy Hall) and hot-air balloons and flight simulators (located on the third floor) which kids just love. Add genuine rockets located on the ground floor to that (part of Exploring Space display) and you’ve got yourself a real killer in terms of things to do in London with kids – and the best part is, it’s free!

Portobello Road Market

Shopping and exploring, both at the same time? Then Portobello Road Market is your best bet. Granted, it’s also an excellent attraction for kids. The unparalleled atmosphere combined with the absolutely head-spinning amount of wares (including clothes, toys and fun gadgets, things that kids can’t live without!) make this place one of the most popular free things to do in London. It is located right in the heart of Notting Hill. In addition to the wide choice of shopping, Portobello Road Market mesmerizes with colorful terraces, cozy bars and eateries, historic pubs and more. Once you (or your kids, we know how it is with them) get hungry, we recommend hitting Honest Burgers at 189 Portobello Rd. This burger house, run by energetic, young owners, offers exactly what the name implies – excellent and honest burgers.

Hampstead Heath

Moving forward, we’ve got Hampstead Heath as one of the top choices on our Top Free Things to do in London list. This ancient parkland is a real lifesaver when you’ve got enough of the hustle and bustle of London (and we’re sure you’ve had quite a bit of that at Portobello Road Market). There are plenty of fun things to try in Hampstead Heath, including a zoo, many peaceful and natural spots, as well as three swimming ponds. After long days spent on exploring the most fantastic entertainment in London, this place is a nice change, which allows you to recharge your batteries and get ready for more great attractions.

Wallace Collection

Hidden from the eyes of London’s mass tourism, Wallace Collection is one of those free things to do in London which require you to stray away from the beaten path. But trust us, it’s a step worth taking! Featuring many famous paintings by Rembrandt, Hals, Delacroix, Rubens, Poussin, Titian, Van Dyck and other great artists, this gallery gives you a real feeling of aristocratic life. It’s housed in a restored, Italianate mansion, which in itself is quite an attraction. Admission is free except for periodical displays. The place has its own restaurant – Wallace – located in the central glass-roofed courtyard. However, if you ask us, there is nothing that goes better with art than wine – and the nearby Clarette offers some of the finest in London (food is not bad there, either!).

The Changing of the Guard

Perhaps one of the most iconic and popular ceremonies in the world – the Changing of the Guard – can be observed every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. It happens at 10.30 am outside Buckingham Palace. We’re fairly certain all adults are familiar with the bearskin hats and red tunics which the Queen’s Guards wear? The ceremony of switching guards is quite a sight and an unforgettable event for everyone, kids included. Of course, it is entirely free – all you gotta do is be there in time to witness this attraction. Remember that if you’re looking for things to do in London during the weekend, this takes place on Fridays and Sundays, and not Saturdays!

Victoria & Albert Museum

The famous V&A; is without a doubt one of the best decorative art museums in the world. With over 150 years of tradition and an astonishing collection of 4.5 million items, it’s a real feast for those who like to admire, explore and discover new cultures. In our opinion, this is one of the best choices when you’re looking for top things to do in London for kids, as it allows you to combine your city break in London with some educational values. Each floor houses a different theme – for example, on the first floor, you can find Asian displays, with ancient Chinese ceramics or Japanese decorative swords.

St Paul’s Church

Those of you who can never have enough of impressive sacral architecture will be delighted with what St Paul’s Church has to offer. Keep in mind that this can be a bit of a risky step with your kids, who aren’t usually that fond of churches and the like. However, we think it’s still worth it to try to encourage them to visit the place – it has plenty of charm with which it makes up for the effort.

Tate Modern

Visiting Tate Modern is one of the most spectacular things to do in London. This modern and contemporary art gallery can be found in South Bank, in a revamped Bankside Power Station. The building itself is quite a sight – it’s a seamless combination of industrial and modern architecture styles. In addition to the regular, free exhibition, it also offers temporary exhibitions which include the works of some of the most famous modern and contemporary artists (please refer to the official website for those). The regular collection includes the works by Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, among others.

Street Art of East London

In London, Street Art can be admired nearly around every corner. However, if you’re looking for some strong recommendations, there is no place better for street art in London than Shoreditch (and some other areas of East London). There is plenty of quality, awe-inspiring graffiti to be admired on the walls around Brick Lane, as well as the streets of Middlesex and Sclater. If your kids are not big enthusiasts of regular museums and art galleries, then maybe hitting the streets in search of some equally impressive pieces is just the correct approach to take?

Top 10 National Parks in the USA

There are plenty of reasons to visit the United States. It is an immensely diverse nation, often called the melting pot of the world, which is the home to immigrants from all over. You cannot picture a typical American, as they are people of different ethnicities, races, backgrounds, and religions. The country is also famous for its unique, albeit rather unhealthy, cuisine, with items such as macaroni and cheese or fried chicken being now famous internationally. Moreover, the diverse landscape of the United States is home to mountain ranges, cliffs, deserts, almost tropical beaches, snowy slopes, forests, and many more. Speaking of the scenic views the United States boasts, the best way to properly witness them is to visit a national park. From over 60 national parks sprinkled all over the country, we bring you this Top 10 National Parks in the USA. list to help you choose the best ones!

Yellowstone National Park

Being probably the most famous nature reserve in the world, the Yellowstone National Park is a true paradise to anyone fascinated by nature and the outside world. The park is filled with mountainous hills and crystal-clear lakes, but the most popular attractions of Yellowstone are its active geysers and colorful hot springs. The landscape within the park is truly one of a kind and spans over more than three thousand square miles, featuring canyons and waterfalls. Be mindful of the wildlife inside of the park and always stay cautious, as the Yellowstone National Park is home to buffaloes, elk, and even fearsome grizzly bears! If you are not an experienced trail-blazer, make sure to get around with a professional guide.

Glacier National Park

Boasting a slightly different landscape than the Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park hosts what researchers believe to be the remnants of glaciers all the way back from the ice age. The park is located in the northern part of the United States, right on the border with Canada, and is the place where many rivers and streams leading to the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico begin their journey through the country. If you want to give the park a try, there is a wide variety of trails for explorers of all skill levels, so you will surely find plenty to do no matter if you are a beginner or an experienced traveler. The park is also home to a massive ecosystem of wildlife animals and features a large number of waterfalls and over 700 lakes.

Yosemite National park

If you happen to be visiting California, Yosemite National park is one of those places you just cannot skip! Not only does Yosemite perfectly showcase the beautiful landscape of the California state, but it does that in style. The park features magnificent waterfalls and some of the most gorgeous cliffsides the United States has to offer. Moreover, it is one of the few places where you can see the famous Sequoia trees in all of their beauty, some of which are more than a thousand years old! While most tourists stay within the safe premises of the 8-square-miles of the Yosemite Valley area, feel free to explore the rest of this 1,200 square miles reserve. Learn climbing or book a guided tour to get the best of what Yosemite National Park has to offer.

Zion National Park

Located in southwestern Utah, right beside the town of Springdale, Zion National Park is full of wonders placed within its 230 square mile radius. The most notable feature of the park is probably the Zion Canyon – a 15-mile long canyon that reaches nearly 3,000 feet deep. The beginning of the canyon, called the Temple of Sinawava, is a natural amphitheater that amplifies whatever you say as if you were using a high-power microphone with massive speakers. A bonus feature of this national park in the US is its magnificent view of the night sky – thousands of stars can be viewed without obstructions during the night and there are no lights nearby to obstruct the sky. However, keep in mind that Zion National Park has lately become a very popular tourist attraction and can often attract crowds.

The Grand Canyon

Even if you have not watched any of the famous spaghetti western movies, you must have heard about the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon, located in northern Arizona, is a true wonder of nature, spanning over 270 river miles in length. The canyon is officially named as a UNESCO World Heritage site and boasts some of the most unforgettable views you will find not only in the United States itself, but in the whole world to be sure! The Colorado River has helped expand the massive canyon – a process that took over six million years, and now it reaches up to one mile in depth in its deepest parts. We recommend taking a tour of the Colorado River itself, as it presents some of the most gorgeous views the Grand Canyon has to offer.

Grand Teton National Park

If you ever wanted to see a place where calm lowlands meet rocky mountains with snow on their peaks, Grand Teton National Park is definitely a place you will enjoy visiting. The National Park is located by the Jackson Hole Valley and is famous for some of the best photo spots in the world, as Instagram models and hikers alike swarm to its picturesque mountain ranges. The park is surrounded by national forests and features one of the last remaining intact ecosystems in the northern parts of the Earth. Moreover, its tallest mountain, Grand Teton, is almost 14,000 feet high, making it the second-highest peak in the state of Wyoming, right after the Gannett Peak. Grand Teton National Park is also located conveniently close to the Yellowstone National Park, to which it is connected by a scenic road called John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway.

The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

If you have thought that only the continental United States has pretty national parks to boast, let us prove you wrong! The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is a hundred-years-old national park located on the island of Hawaii in the state of Hawaii. The two most prominent features of the park are probably its two active volcanoes, called Kilauea, which itself is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa. The national park is not only a tourist’s dream, but it is also frequently used by scientists who still research the process of volcano creation. For visitors, on the other hand, the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park presents some of the most intense volcanic landscapes, where lava flows freely and unique flora and fauna can be found.

Rocky Mountain National Park

The Rocky Mountains themselves are a great day-trip idea, especially if you happen to be visiting the Denver area, as they are located just about 70 miles to the north, and Rocky Mountain National Park is the cherry on top of those mountains. Even though the park is not the largest national park in the country, its elevation more than makes up for its lack of area. The park rises over 12,000 feet over the sea level, providing many opportunities to look at the gorgeous Colorado landscape from up-high. If you like hiking, you will be happy to know that the park features over 350 miles of trails of all skill levels, which will take you through the forests and reflective lakes of the Rocky Mountains. As an added bonus, Rocky Mountain National Park is not a popular tourist spot, so you will probably not have to work your way through crowds when you’re there!

Arches National Park

For some truly other-worldly sights, we fully recommend taking a trip to the Arches National Park, which is unique even among the national parks in the US. The park is very close to the Grand Canyon, located adjacent to the Colorado River, and features over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, which are famously shown in many Hollywood productions. The most recognizable of them, the Delicate Arch, is over 52 feet tall and is even depicted on the license plates of Utah, as well on some postage stamps. Moreover, in 2002 during the Winter Olympics, the Olympic torch has passed through the arch. Besides the Delicate Arch, Arches National Park features almost eight thousand acres of rocky desert, which receives less than 10 inches of rain each year and is one of the dryest places on Earth.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Spanning through both Tennessee and North Carolina, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most frequently visited national parks in the US with over 10 million people coming each year to witness its beauty. The mountains around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have seen human history since the prehistoric era, when the Paleo Indians traveled through them, as well as the 19th-century European settlers that came to America in search of a new home. And you know what the best part about this gorgeous national park is? You can view it for free, unlike most of the parks in the country!

Things to do while you in Maldives Islands?

Maldives Islands Geographical

The Maldives Islands comprises of 1190 coral islands grouped into 26 circular atolls, lying in two rows straddling the equator over an area of 90,000sqkm. Only 200 islands are inhabited by locals and some 90 more are developed as tourist resorts. The islands are low-lying; the highest point barely eight feet above sea level. Ring-shaped atolls enclose lagoons in which islands are located. Because of their unique placement in lagoons, these islands are protected from harsh winds and waves. This paves way for the exclusive Maldivian overwater villas, built just off the shores.

The History of  Maldives Islands

The history of the Maldives Islands are enshrouded in myths and legends. The islands used to be a haunt of lost travelers. There are references to the islands and its people in the Roman Manual of Navigation during 1st century AD. Ancient history testifies to the fact that Maldivians were not limited by their geographical isolation and traveled far and wide. This helped the world know about the islands and its natural beauty. This trend continues even today; despite its miniscule size, the Maldives Islands remains a popular destination for travelers worldwide.

Cultural information of Maldives islands

The islands, being part of established trade routes in the Indian Ocean, had its share of visitors and settlers, influencing its language and lifestyle. It was the meeting point of travelers from Africa, Arab countries, Malay Peninsula and mariners from Indonesia. Even as people from different parts of the world made Maldivian atolls their home, the genealogy of each atoll is different. The influence of other cultures is evident in the islanders’ art, craft, music and cuisine. Islam is the dominant faith here and superstition and influence of supernatural continue to play a major role in islanders’ lives. Folklores are plentiful and art forms display strong influence of other cultures. Open to adaptation and welcoming others with open arms, Maldivians continue to evolve in these modern times.

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Types of Icelandic Food

If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, you’ll soon realize that the country’s culinary world is as unique as its landscape. At least that’s what we found. From a bowl of delicious fish soup after a day in the Westfjords to lobster pizza in a fishing village on the South Coast, dining here is an adventure in itself. Icelandic cuisine draws on centuries-old traditions shaped by isolation and survival, then adds the modern creativity of a new generation of chefs.

On this journey, you can start with plokkfiskur, a creamy fish stew, or hangikjöt, smoked lamb that is often served at Christmas. You will find pylsur, Iceland’s famous hot dogs, on city streets and remote gas stations, while rúgbrauð (black rye bread) is baked underground in hot springs. Fresh catches like humar (lobster) and Arctic char showcase the island’s pristine waters, and treats like homemade Icelandic ice cream or tangy skyr will sweeten your day.

Best

Hangikjöt  (Smoked Lamb)

Hangikjöt is smoked Icelandic lambs. It is reputed to be especially good because of how the sheep are farmed, which is quite old fashioned: they are free to roam around the wilderness of the unspoiled and rather barren highlands all summer long without any supervision at all. The sheep graze not only on grass, but also on plants and herbs which contributes to their rich and complex flavour. In this way, the meat has been marinated the entire life of the animal.

After the slaughter, the farmer smokes the lamb traditionally fueling the fire with birch or dried sheep dung – each of which adds its own distinctive flavour. Smoked lamb is usually served up with potatoes, béchamel sauce, red beets and green peas.

Skyr

The famous not-actually-a-yoghurt-but-nobody-cares product, skyr, is technically a type of soft cheese, made from gelatinous milk curds. As appetizing as that sounds, mixed with milk and served with sugar or Icelandic blueberries, it’s actually quite wonderful, with a rich, yoghurt-like texture and slightly sour taste.

The real magic, however, is in its nutritional value. This superfood is incredibly high in protein and unbelievably low in everything else, a typical batch sporting something like 12% protein, 3% carbohydrate and 0,5% fat, and also rich in calcium and various vitamins.

Icelandic fish  (All the fish)

In addition to the wide variety unbelievably fresh fish available, there are two types of interesting traditional Icelandic fish worth noting:

  • Saltfiskur (Bacalao): Saltfiskur, literally salt-fish, has been dried and salted. It has a history in scandinavia of more than 500 years, and used to be a major export before refrigeration was a thing. Recently however, it has experienced a revival in some Icelandic restaurants.
  • Harðfiskur (Stockfish): The simplest way to explain harðfiskur is that it is like beef jerky. Only fish. So fish jerky. It is dried out in the cold air, where the cold air bacteria ferment it in a process similar to the fermenting of cheese. So fish-cheese jerky. And it’s awesome. You eat it with butter.

Kjötsúpa  (Meat soup)

Another traditional lamb dish, it was originally a way of preparing tougher pieces of meat but these days is cooked with as high quality meat as any other dish. The meat is cut into small pieces and boiled with bones and all, with rice, potatoes, turnips, carrots, onions and   herbs. It is boiled for several hours before serving, though most Icelanders agree that it gets even better if you let it sit for a day and then re-heat it.

“Ein með öllu” – the iconic Icelandic hot dog

One of the most typically Icelandic foods is the pylsa hot dog. They contain lamb which gives them an unusual flavour, but the magic is in the sauces. A real Icelandic hot dog is served með öllu, with everything on it, which means ketchup, a sweet brown mustard, raw onions, fried onions, and remoulade (a sauce made with mayonnaise and relish).

Svið  (Singed and boiled Sheep Head)

Svið literally means “singed”, from how the sheep head is singed to remove the hair. It is then brained, boiled and served with mashed turnips, potatoes and rhubarb jelly. Then you eat its face. And eyeballs. Gross as it sounds (and looks), svið is not actually bad food, and you absolutely must try it when you’re here, if only to say that you did it.

Hrútspungar  (Rams testicles)

Because of the historical poverty of the Icelanders, it was essential that nothing, absolutely nothing, went to waste. Hrútspungur is ram’s testicles. In order to preserve this delicacy, it is pressed into blocks and pickled to perfection. Mmmmmm.

Horse

Different from the other entries on the list, horse is on the “worst” side more for the moral reprehension most people have towards it. It is actually quite delicious when you try it. Which, considering the news recently, you probably already have, to be fair.

Hákarl  (Shark)

Hákarl is cured shark. Have you ever heard of the delicious shark-fin soup? Yeah this is   nothing like that. Hákarl has a strong taste of ammonia (you know, thecleaning product), and is reminiscent of a very, very ripe cheese.
Because there is so much urea (you know, like the stuff in urine) in the meat, fresh shark would be highly poisonous, but after curing it is only slightly poisonous. Curing is done by burying it under the ground for 6-12 weeks, then hanging it to dry and ferment for four to five months. You absolutely must try it though, because all your friends will ask about it when you get back home, and because it’s an excellent excuse to drink Brennivín, the icelandic schnapps lovingly (and fittingly) nicknamed Black Death.

Skata  (skate)

Skate is flat fish that has a long tail. The terrible thing about skata is the smell. It is in some ways similar to shark, only skata is boiled, and traditionally served at a party on the day before christmas eve. The smell is overpowering and causes neighborly disputes, it gets in your fancy clothes you were planning to wear over christmas and it never comes out. However, if you brave the smell, Skata has an acquired taste, and if you get used to it, you will really love it.

Scotland’s Inveraray Castle Should Not be Missed on Your Travel!

Inveraray Castle is a country house located near the county of Argyll on the Western side of Scotland

Inveraray Castle is a country house located near the county of Argyll on the Western side of Scotland. The Castle is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture. It has been the seat of Argyll Dukes and chiefs of Clan Campbell since the 18th Century. The construction of the Castle began in 1743, and the architecture replaced the earlier design that was built in the early 15th Century. Later in 1975, fire struck Inveraray severely, and the 12th Duke and his family lived in the basement while restorations were carried out. Today, the Castle is open to visitors. It houses unique collections that include over 1300 swords, pikes, muskets and other weapons. The 13th Duke and his family live in private apartments of the Castle on two floors.

Hauntings of the Inveraray Castle

Many haunting appearances have happened at the Inveraray Castle. Some of the occurrences date back to the previous old structure on the site. In 1644, a young Irish boy who was playing the harp was killed brutally. The Marquis’s men slaughtered the boy in a rage that he was working for their sworn enemy. They left his quartered body on the Duke’s bed. Many legends have reported that the boy’s spirit moves around the bed that is now fixed in the MacArthur room of the current site. In other reports, staff and visitors noticed the bed moving on its own. They have also experienced cold spots and headaches in the room. On several occasions, harp music has been heard with the sound of books being thrown. Sometimes visitors are often seen laughing in the library all of a sudden for no reason.

It is believed that there is a death omen attached with the phantom harpist and the room of MacArthur. It is also reported that harp music can be heard in the room whenever a member of the family is about to pass away. This incident was last reported in 1949 when the 10th duke died. Another death incident happened when the ghost ship claimed the life of the Clan Campbell Chief. Another ghost is a young woman who was murdered by Jacobites. Many have seen the spirit roaming around the Castle in a grey gown and therefore named as “the Grey Lady” though her exact identity is still unknown.

How to Save Money on Longer Trips Overseas?

Traveling can be an amazing hobby, full of opportunities to learn and experiences to be had. Like everything else in life, traveling comes with a cost. Overseas trips can quickly become quite expensive, especially as the duration of the trip increases. That said, there are some things you can do to save money and make your funds go further on such travels.

Use Travel Credit Cards

Travel credit cards can give you a huge financial advantage when you go on trips. Such cards often offer discounts on hotels and the opportunity to accrue miles that you can put towards flights. You may also have trip cancellation coverage or interruption protection, rental car insurance, or travel insurance, depending on the details on your benefits statement. Of course, depending on the credit card you have, your card could be costing you money in the form of foreign transaction fees. For the best savings, make sure you use travel credit cards that don’t have these types of fees associated with them.

Look for Deals

Everybody loves a bargain. Looking for deals on your travel expenses can be a good way to make your money go further. There’s an entire industry dedicated to finding good deals for travelers, whether they are looking for deals on flights, accommodations, cruises, etc. The hidden city strategy is one way to save money on flights, but be careful if you choose to go this route. Airlines don’t really appreciate it and have been known to take action against those who get caught. Don’t forget to take into account how you’re going to get around once you arrive at your destination. Some options are more affordable than others. Renting is usually cheaper and easier than leasing a car for a month or longer.

Use Cash

Many countries still use cash for many everyday transactions. Some places may not even take cards, so having cash on hand is essential. Having the local currency is preferable, and has the potential to save you money. Better pricing may be available in the local currency, and sometimes the exchange rate works in your favor here too. Be smart about handling cash when traveling to protect yourself from theft.

Traveling can be expensive, especially when traveling internationally overseas. You can save money by using travel credit cards, looking for deals, and using cash, especially the local currency. Protect yourself financially, become more financially savvy, and learn to do more with less when you take steps to save money on longer overseas trips.
