24

General about Voice controlVoice control means that certain functions inthe navigation system can be activated by thespoken word.

The Voice commands offer comfort and helpthe driver to avoid distraction - instead thedriver can concentrate on driving and focusattention on the road and traffic situation.

WARNING

The driver always holds overall responsibil-ity for driving the vehicle in a safe mannerand complying with all applicable rules ofthe road.

The Voice control uses the common micro-phone of the hands-free system - the driverreceives responses to the Voice controlthrough the vehicle's loud speakers.

The microphone is positioned in the ceiling infront of the driver for optimal take-up of thedriver's speech - it can however be disturbedby/pick up loud voices from passengers.

Handling

Keypad in steering wheel.

Activating the system• A short press on the steering wheel but-

ton (1) activates the voice recognitionsystem - a voice command can be givenafter the tone.

Think of the following when using the voicerecognition system:

• For commands: - Speak after the tonewith a normal voice at a normal tempo.

• The car's doors, windows and sunroofmust be closed.

• Avoid background noise in the passengercompartment.

NOTE

If the driver is unsure of which commandto use, he/she can say "Help" - the sys-tem then responds with several differentcommands which can be used in the cur-rent situation.

Voice commands can be disabled by:

• press EXIT

• hold the steering wheel button forVoice recognition depressed for sev-eral seconds.

Use the voice commandEntering information in the navigation systemusing the voice command is very simplebecause the screen lists the frequently occur-ring commands to be used in the relevant sit-uation.

• Say "Navigation", then wait for theresponse from the system in the form ofsuitable alternatives on the screen - con-tinue selecting and say e.g. "Setaddress".

or

• Say the whole command in one sequence- "Navigation Set address".

Some simple tips• To give a command: - Give a short press

on the steering wheel's voice button andthen speak naturally after the tone.

• To answer the voice recognition system:- Speak after the tone that finishes thequestion.

• The voice recognition system asks sev-eral times for an answer. If the driver doesnot answer then the session is conclu-ded.

• The dialogue with the system can bespeeded up: - Interrupt the system'sspeech with a short press on the steeringwheel's voice button, wait for a tone andthen start to speak.

• The driver can obtain help during a dia-logue by saying "Help" after the tone.

NOTE

A complete list of quick commands isavailable in the menu system MY CAR -MY CAR Settings Voice controlsettings Command list.

VolumeAdjust the audio volume of the voice recogni-tion system with the centre console's VOLknob while the system is speaking.

Help functions and settingsMY CAR Settings Voice controlsettings

The menu system MY CAR1 contains pro-grams where the driver can practice the voicerecognition system's functions.

The better the driver knows the voice recog-nition system, the more comfortable thedriver will be using the functions. For this rea-son it is recommended that you acquaintyourself with the built-in practice programs.

NOTE

The exercise programs are only accessiblewhen the car is stationary with the parkingbrake applied.

Here, the driver's role is to repeat the wordsand sentences read out by the program'svoice after each audio signal, as well as tofollow the onscreen instructions. The timerequired for profiling is approx. 5 minutes.

After profiling is complete a setting can bemade with the desired option highlighted +OK:

• Default - standard setting if no voice andlanguage profiling is completed.

• Trained user - The voice recognitionsystem is adapted for a specific driver ina specific language.

NOTE

Menu option Default can only be changedto Trained user after a lesson on Usersetting has been completed.

Language

The voice recognition system is under contin-uous development and at the time of theissue of this manual the function was availa-ble in the following languages:

• English (UK)

• French (FRA)

• Dutch

• Italian

• Russia

• Spanish (EU)

• Swedish

• German

NOTE

The voice recognition system in combina-tion with GPS navigation only works withthe languages listed here.

Change language

MY CAR Settings Language

The languages that are included in thevoice recognition system have thisicon in the language list.

To change the language - navigate to MYCAR Settings Language and highlightthe required language + OK + NAV.

Language dependent user profileThe voice recognition system only under-stands the language set in MY CAR.

Say that the voice and language profile"Trained user" is stored by a Swedishspeaking driver with the system set in Swed-ish.

If the driver then changes the car's language(in MY CAR) to English, the voice recognitionsystem will not work.

This is because the voice and language pro-file "Trained user" - which only understandscommands in Swedish - is no longer selecta-ble since the voice recognition system nowonly understands and expects Englishspeech. Instead, the system activates theoption "Default".

For the voice recognition system to under-stand the driver's English pronunciation, theonly solution is to repeat the proceduredescribed under the heading "User profile"2 -but then with the system set to English.

NOTE

If a market is not included in the languagelist then there is always the option toselect a language from the list and usevoice recognition in that language for navi-gation.

However, note that if the language ischanged to English, for example, in MYCAR, then not only is Voice recognitionchanged to English - but Voice guidanceand Menu and Help texts also change tothe same language.

The position of the car on the map iswrongThe Navigation system shows the position ofthe car to an accuracy of about 20 metres.

There is a greater chance of error when driv-ing on roads lying parallel to another road, onwinding roads, on roads on several levels andafter driving a long distance without makingany distinctive turns.

High mountains, buildings, tunnels, viaducts,over/underpasses etc. also have a negativeaffect on the reception of GPS signals, whichmeans that accuracy in calculating the posi-tion of the car may decrease.

The system does not always calculatethe fastest/shortest routeWhen calculating a route outline, distance, width of road, type of road, number of right orleft turns, roundabouts etc. are all taken intoaccount in order to produce the best theoreti-cal route. A more efficient selection of routemay be possible based on experience andknowledge of the area.

The system uses toll roads, motorwaysand ferries even though I chose to avoidthemFor technical reasons, the system can onlyuse major roads when calculating a route out-line extending over a long distance.

If you selected to avoid toll roads and motor-ways, then they are avoided to the greatestpossible extent and are only used if there isno other reasonable alternative available.

The position of the car on the map isincorrect after transportationIf the car is transported, for example by ferryor train, or in such a way as to impede thereception of GPS signals, it can take up to5 minutes before the position of the car iscorrectly calculated.

The position of the car on the map isincorrect after the car battery has beendisconnectedIf power has been cut from the GPS antenna,it can take more than 5 minutes for the GPSsignals to be received correctly and the posi-tion of the car to be calculated.

The car symbol on screen behaves errati-cally after a tyre change

In addition to the GPS receiver, the car'sspeed sensor and a gyro assist in calculatingthe current position and direction of travel ofthe car. After fitting the spare wheel or chang-ing between summer and winter tyres thesystem needs to "learn" the size of the newwheels.

In order for the system to work optimally it isrecommended to turn the steering wheel to

full lock a few times while driving, in a suita-ble location.

The map image does not correspondwith the real situationFactors such as the constant expansion andrebuilding of the road network, new trafficregulations constantly being introduced etc.mean that the map database is not alwayscomplete.

Continuous development and updating ofmap data is underway - a Volvo dealer canprovide more information.

See also www.volvocars.com/navi for furtherinformation on maps etc.

The scale of the map sometimeschangesThere is no detailed map information in cer-tain areas. The system then automaticallychanges the degree of magnification.

The car symbol on screen jumpsforwards or spinsThe system may need a few seconds tosense the position and movement of the carbefore driving off.

Switch off both the system and the engine.Start again, but remain stationary for a whilebefore starting to drive.
