View from the Past by Paul Smith
Hello and welcome to my View from the Past. This month we travel back in time to 1962 and the final service outside
of the Old Chapel building on Lincoln Lane, opposite School Lane. At that time Thorpe had 3 places of worship. The building was used in
later years as a tractor store and then was demolished in the early 1980’s to make way for the new houses that now occupy the spot.

What’s going on…...
It has been a busy couple of months in the village culminating in a successful ‘Love Your Parish Week’ conceived and organised by our Parish Clerk. Well done Janet; we think this may even be a ‘first’’ in the country! The Parish Council have plans to make this an annual event so look out for it next year and please join in where you can.
The Parish Council have also launched a closed Facebook page which already has 67 members. This is for posting positive community information with regards to events in the village. The Railway Inn also has a Facebook page so if you haven’t already done so why not take a look.
Spring has been and gone but once again the display of daffodils and snow drops in the village was tremendous, many thanks to the residents who gave of their valuable time in the past to ensure the season is enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.
The Village Plan group have been very busy and well deserve our thanks for the work that is being done on our behalf. A report is included on page 14. The THREDS groups also continue to do well. All their reports and notices of forthcoming events and meetings can be seen here in View from the Hill. Don’t forget if you live in the village you are automatically a member of THREDS, everyone’s welcome to join in with the various groups at any time.
Finally well done to everyone concerned with the Cake and Plant Stalls held in the Church on Tuesday 10th May; particularly to the organisers, helpers and those who supplied and purchased the delicious cakes, healthy looking plants and donated the raffle prizes. The fun afternoon was well attended, despite the inclement weather and a grand total of £193.75 was raised for Church Funds.

So, why not come and join us at one of our forthcoming meetings? Held monthly on Monday evenings 7pm – 9pm, in the Oliver Roper Centre, the next dates are the 13th June and 11th July. Your first meeting will be free and then after-wards a subscription of £3.00, to cover hall rental and

The Queen’s Birthday Party THREDS
The Queens Birthday was celebrated in style by a full house at the Oliver Roper Centre on St Georges Day. If you weren’t able to be there then you missed a great night. The room had been decorated with flags and bunting and the tables beautifully dressed with white tablecloths and patriotic red, white and blue flower arrangements; thanks to all concerned but especially Jane Trotman. Everyone brought along a contribution to the buffet which was once again exceptional. Entertainment ranged from a wide selection of music from village musicians “Over the Hill”, with special guest singers Wendy Sykes and Chris Abrams, to readings from Fran and Gordon Kobish and a ‘right royal’ quiz by Jane Taylor. A highlight of the evening was Ron Bradford presenting his version of Rule Brittania, brilliantly done only 3 weeks after a knee replacement operation. This never fails to get everyone singing and as always the roof was raised! We look forward with great anticipation to the next event.

A Personal View from the Hill by Tony Magri
My view is that Love Your Parish Week is a wonderful idea and agree that it is one that should become a tradition. Perhaps all the village groups should try to arrange their normal activity in this week so that, as well as new events and activities, it would then include meetings of the book group, walking group, bridge group, craft group etc and perhaps it could be a theme at the church, scouts and the school.
It’s pleasing to report that at least 23 villagers ate at the Railway Inn to recognise Love Your Parish Pub Day. A small group went for lunch, two more had an afternoon drink accompanied by a bowl of chips and 19 enjoyed an evening meal. I heard nothing but positive comments about the food served by the new chef and many were tempted by the tasty desserts.
Finishing with a party is always a good idea so on Saturday 14th May about 40 of us gathered at the Oliver Roper Centre to celebrate the end of a wonderful week. If we didn’t know before the week started, we know now that we live in a village with a strong sense of community in a parish with glorious countryside.
We talked, we listened (to each other and to the always excellent Over the Hill), we sang, we laughed, we ate lovely food (special thanks to Janet and Jane), we enjoyed a glass or two, we quizzed, we were shocked at how little we knew (thanks Jane for the an-swers), we raised funds (£105 for charity), we washed up (some did), we tidied up and we all went home happy.
Thank you Over the Hill for the hours that you spend practicing for our benefit.
Thank you Janet for your excellent idea and for all your hard work in putting the week together. I know that there have already been discussions about next year’s event.

PARISH COUNCIL NOTES
It has been a busy month of May and all in all a successful one.
Love Your Parish Week. from 7th to 15th May was embraced by many and seemed to be very well received.
The current ‘hot topic’ is of course the Neighbourhood Plan and over 30 residents attended the Oliver Roper Centre on Sat 7th May to be updated on its progress. The questionnaires which many village residents completed had been analysed and a set of draft proposals were displayed and further comments taken.
At the current time a Local Plan ( which is a different document to our Neighbourhood Plan) is being formulated by the Central Lincolnshire Joint Planning Unit. This is an amalgam of the Lincoln City, North Kesteven and West Lindsey District Council Planning Teams. Our completed Neighbourhood Plan will have to be in accord with this overall Local Plan. ( Nothing’s easy is it?)
It is the intention to ensure that Thorpe on the Hill is designated as a “small village” within the Local Plan which would mean that the village would be recognised by the planning process as a small settlement where no major development would be allowed.
This was the overwhelming wish expressed by residents in the questionnaire responses.
Completion is still sometime away. The next stage of the process is to employ a planning consultant to convert the village aspirations into a legal planning document. Nevertheless an enormous amount of work has been completed and we are very grateful for the hard work put in so far by the Village Plan Team. Everyone will be kept updated through articles published in View from the Hill although we are hoping to develop a new village website in the near future which will allow up to date information on all comings and goings within the village.
Finally congratulations to Councillor Sheldon the new Chairman of the Parish Council and to Councillor Williams the new Vice Chairman. Many thanks to Councillor Martin for his hard work as the previous Chairman.
Copies of ‘Thorpe on the Hill Village Plan’ are available from the Parish Clerk. Janet’s email is: [email protected] or visit the website: http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ThorpeonTheHill. Thanks.

27th Lincoln Scout Group – First Quarter 2016 Queens 90th Birthday Celebrations. The 27th Lincoln Scout Group joined over 2,200 others across the country in lighting an official beacon at a group meeting held at Activities Away. We also cut a special cake to celebrate the 90th birthday of The Queen and the anniversaries of Cubs100 and Beavers30. Astronaut Tim Peake. During the group night each section planted rocket seeds that have just returned from the International Space Station as well as some that have been stored on Earth. We’ll be submitting our results as part of a national experiment with the UK and European Space Agencies, in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, turning all of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts into real Space Biologists. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders and parents also hiked 1km laps of the lake to build up our space miles in the Space to Earth Challenge, set by Tim Peake to encourage young people to get active and cover the 400km between the ISS and Earth before his return in June. Inspired by Tim Peake running the London Marathon on the ISS (which he completed on the treadmill, 250 miles above the Earth in 3hours and 35 minutes!) our young people, leaders … even parents put their walking boots on. In one night we covered 92km! Added to the 236 already behind us … only another 72 to go … Parents could look through our Space Diaries, authored by Lucy – daughter of Professor Stephen Hawking that we’ve been completing as Tim’s mission progresses and we also invested, awarded Chief Scout Bronze Awards, activity badges, Principia mission stickers and Queens Birthday badges. We also designed our favourite healthy meals that could be taken to space linked with Heston Blumenthals Space Dinner challenge and our healthy eating program work. St Georges Day. All sections attended the St Georges Day parade and we displayed our Cubs100 and Beavers30 banners with immense pride. Operation Goodwill. 27th Lincoln took part in the Monopoly based game around the city for the entry fee of food parcels for the Lincoln Leader Young people in all the sections enjoyed the sights and questions around Lincoln. We might not have placed in the top three but we passed go and had great fun knowing we were also helping others. Section Programmes. All sections made pancakes and celebrated Chinese New Year with dragon dancing, Chinese food, fortune sticks and crafts for their international activities. Scouts have been preparing for an imminent expedition with map work, first aid, a kit night at Go Outdoors, meal planning and cooking. They’ve been to Battlecamp, playzone and will be sailing, kayaking and finishing the summer with a trip to Bomber Command. Cubs have been taking part in many of the Cubs100 events at Playzone and the Odeon to see the new Jungle Book movie as well as completing their road safety badge, with a visit from the RAC. They will soon be welcoming visitors to talk about stroke awareness and teach sign language. Beavers have enjoyed a Pirate sleepover, junk modelling, been working on their cook activity badge and My World and Outdoors challenges. They will be preparing for their summer perform-ance, practicing their photography, taking up personal challenges and finishing the summer term kayaking. If you are interested in finding out more about the 27th Lincoln Scout Group or would like to join us as a member or perhaps as an adult helper or leader (as often or as little as you’d like) … we’d love to hear from you. Thankyou. Ellie. [email protected]

BOOK CLUB
Our fifth book was “Just a Little Run Around the World” by Rosie
Swale Pope. The notes on the back cover of this true story say -
Heartbroken when she lost her husband to cancer, Rosie set off from
Wales with nothing but a small cart of food and equipment, funded by the
rent from her little cottage. So began her epic 5-year journey that would
take her 20,000 miles around the world, crossing Europe, Russia, Asia,
Alaska, North America, Greenland, Iceland, and back into the UK, in
memory of the man she loved. Followed by wolves, knocked down by a
bus, confronted by bears, chased by a naked man with a gun and
stranded with severe frostbite, Rosie's breathtaking 20,000-mile solo
journey is as gripping as it is inspiring.
There was unanimous agreement that the book was a very
enjoyable read, that Rosie Swale Pope is very brave and inspira-
tional and that it is unlikely that anyone will ever repeat the jour-
ney. As well as great determination, she needed more luck than a
room full of lottery jackpot winners to have avoided death on several
occasions.
The evening was wonderfully hosted by Sue and Gordon Kobish. If
you would like to join us please get in touch with Jane on 695968.

Loose THREDS The Village Walking Group - Walks 9 and 10
Love Your Parish Boundary - Love Your Parish Wildlife Sunday 8th May and Thursday 12th May
As part of Love Your Parish week two walks were organised. They both involved Beating the Bounds and observing some of the rich biodiversity of wildlife in the parish.
Wikipedia tells us: “Beating the bounds is an ancient custom still observed in some English and Welsh parishes. A group of old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest and church officials, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands. In former times when maps were rare it was usual to make a formal perambulation of the parish boundaries on Ascension Day or during Rogation week. Knowledge of the limits of each parish needed to be handed down so that such matters as liability to contribute to the repair of the church, and the right to be buried within the churchyard were not disputed. The priest of the parish with the churchwardens and the parochial officials headed a crowd of boys who, armed with green boughs, usually birch or willow, beat the parish boundary markers with them. Sometimes the boys were themselves whipped or even violently bumped on the boundary-stones to make them remember. The object of taking boys along is supposed to ensure that witnesses to the boundaries should survive as long as possible. Although modern surveying techniques make the ceremony obsolete, at least for its secular purpose, many English parishes carry out a regular beating of the bounds, as a way of strengthening the community and giving it a sense of place.”
For the first walk, we Beat the Bounds of the northern parish boundary in Whisby Nature Park. For the second, we followed the boundary to the west, in Tunman Wood and along Morton Lane towards the Avenue. We had neither parish priest nor small boys and there was certainly no whipping but I think we managed to strengthen the community and give those who took part a sense of place. On both walks, the community was further strengthened at the Railway Inn.
The wildlife: The parish can boast a significant portion of Whisby Nature Park, but this is only a small part of our incredibly biodiverse parish. As well as this popular visitor attraction, there are freshwater lakes, Local Wildlife Sites (LWS), one Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), ancient woodland, a small tradi-tional orchard, historic grassland and Priority Habitats including rare reed beds. 2770 species have been recorded in the parish. Some of the highlights of the two walks included seeing southern marsh or-chids, cowslips, bluebells and primroses and some heard a nightingale at Whisby Nature Park.

As we write this we are just nearing the end of the SATs week for Year 6 – whatever we feel about the tests that our children have just taken; we know they have tried their best and completed what have become known as the most challenging assessments to date! They have done themselves proud as have all the hard working staff who have helped them – the Year 6 are celebrating the end of the week with a trip to Frankie and Benny’s!
Last week saw us undertake what is called a Peer Review. This is a process where senior staff from linked schools come and help us review and evaluate our school and check that we are working towards the correct priorities. We worked with a local head teacher and an OFSTED inspector – at the time we questioned why we invited an OFSTED inspector to take part as at times the few days felt like a mock OFSTED! But we were pleased he came as we were graded as OUTSTANDING in all areas and could not be happier!
Here are some of the comments from the report: “The committed and highly effective leadership of the headteacher and deputy head-teacher has galvanised the staff into a cohesive and determined team.” “The quality of teaching is outstanding. It interests, excites and inspires pupils.” “Relationships between staff and pupils are exemplary.” “Strong emphasis is placed on ‘values education’ meaning pupils become thoughtful, considerate and reflective learners.” “Children make excellent progress in the Reception class.” “The behaviour of pupils is outstanding being at all times impeccable.” “Parents agree that their child is taught well and that the school keeps them well informed. They say their children are happy at school and make good progress. When asked “Even better if….”, no significant improvements were suggested.” “Pupils follow a rich, broad and balanced curriculum that has been carefully constructed to meet the demands of the new national curriculum and is underpinned by the school values.”
These are just some of the many positive comments we received. Why not come and have a look for yourself and see what we are about by popping into one of the following events over the next term? Wednesday 18
th May – Open Afternoon at 1.30pm
Wednesday 8th June – Open Evening/Pudding Club at 6pm

In the next issue we will be reporting on the Year 6 trip to the Church School’s Festival
and our whole school trip to the coast – let’s hope for some great weather!
