Andrea Rey promoted to Executive Director at The Spaulding Wooden Boat Center.

Sausalito, CA --- November 13, 2012 ---- The Board of Directors at The Spaulding Wooden Boat Center has appointed Andrea Rey as their new Executive Director. For the past 5 years, Andrea has served as the Center’s Associate Director. During her tenure, she has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Center’s many programs. Andrea has demonstrated her leadership through her various roles- from strategic planning, fundraising, director of daily opera-tions, and oversight of four programs to working as an instructor for the Spaulding Youth Boatbuilding Program. Re-cently, Andrea successfully secured a grant from the San Francisco Baykeepers to develop a “Boatyard Best Manage-ment Practices” showcase at the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center. Andrea’s nonprofit career began fifteen years ago when she worked at The Women’s Building and Lyon-Martin Health Services, both in San Francisco. Andrea was born and raised in Mar del Plata, Argentina. She grew up in a family of craftsmen and business entrepreneurs. Andrea’s deep interest in business leadership inspired her to launch her first business venture at age 17, a successful cookie factory that is still in business. In 1996, Andrea moved to the San Fran-cisco Bay Area. She specialized in 13th to 18th century antique furniture restoration and worked for some of the most notable designers and antique collectors in United States. Andrea is also a fine artist. Her wood sculpture has been ex-hibited in Europe, Latin America and United States and is part of several important private collections. Ten years ago, she moved to Sausalito to pursue her interest in wooden boat restoration. Andrea Rey Executive Director Spaulding Wooden Boat Center

A gateway to wooden boat building, traditions and seamanship for people from all wlks of life.

All of a sudden December has arrived. It gets me to thinking about all the fun I’ve had with each and every member during this past year. I want to thank you all for not only attending the Regatta and the Corinthian Boat show but the smaller functions – the Chicken Ship Regatta to Petaluma, the Offshore Cruise and the Spring General Meeting and Potluck. Now is the time to remind you to en-joy this holiday season and then look forward to the January 1 Race for the Chili Pot. Hope to see you all get your vessels out on this first day of a new year. This is truly the time for us to host new boats, try and find new folks to help with the planning and execution of other events and generally get involved. Please walk your docks and find that beautiful woodie that just doesn’t “know” about the Master Mariners and invite them to join us. Also a great time to remind others that it is time to rejoin in the very near future. We all sometimes let that opportunity get away and say “I’ll rejoin later”. This is a fun organization and it is fun to get involved with the running of events and assisting in many small ways that do not require an extended time commitment. Wishing you a great holiday and “fair winds” in 1213. Patty Henderson

The Bear Fleet Celebrates 80 Years On Saturday, 20 October 2012, the San Francisco Maritime NHP hosted an 80th Anniversary Celebration for Bear Boat #1, Merry Bear. Seven other Bears -- 9 Panda, 13 Sugarfoot, 29 Smokey, 32 Little Dipper, 35 Renegade, 47 Chance, and 65 Magic -- sailed in to the Aquatic Park Lagoon and met Merry Bear sporting a new suit of 1930 replica sails. The staff of the Small Boat Shop had just received and bent on new sails to complete a phase of restoration of the 80 year old guest of honor. The small fleet ghosted about the lagoon in sight of the Park visitors on Hyde Street Pier before tying up and enjoying the afternoon. Park staff, Bear fleet members, family and friends visited the boats, shared stories and scrap book pho-tos, and talked about the next set of projects needed to keep little wooden boats sailing. Russell and Christine Katz, # 35 Renegade, were pleased to visit with two former owners Bill Rude and David Bacon. David Bacon has a mythic status in Bear fleet; he is the guy who sailed a Bear from the Bay to the Sea of Cortez in 1980s. David brought photos, stories, and a number answers to the questions about the unique gear Russell has in his garage that was removed during his restoration effort. Brothers Daniel and Tim Maloney brought the family boats: # 9 Panda which was owned by their grandfather in 50’s and Bear fleet youngster #65 Magic built in 1959. They welcomed Barbara McVeigh and three generations of her family aboard Magic which her great uncle Robert Keleher had built and sailed to consecutive season championships in the mid-1960s. Patti Tipton, granddaughter of Bear Class designer Ernie Nunes, came with family members and the best scrap book entries: copies of Bear class build notes from her great grandfather’s, Manuel Nunes, construction notebook. Patti re-cently rescued #37 from the hard in Napa (see the July 2012 Sightings article in Latitude 38). Patti and her husband Keith have invested in significant repairs and Patti is now full filling a lifelong dream: sailing one the boats built by her grand-father. The Bear Fleet hopes to see the newly christened Patti Bear in Bay soon. We also hope she convinces her sister to take on a second Bear in need. Ansel Wettersten recalled the story of how boat #47 had been given up for lost after it burned and sank. Jens Hansen was not to be deterred and spent $25 to acquire the hulk. After it was raised, rebuilt and launched with a second lease on life, he renamed her Chance. Today, when Glenn Treser and Ansel race that boat, the rest of fleet still thinks they are on fire. The San Francisco Maritime NHP staff and volunteers really deserve credit for making a good day great. SFMNHP ship-wright Jeff Vallelly kept an overnight watch tending the fire for the pulled pork. Volunteer Amelia Cass baked the cele-bration cookies in the shape of the Bear mains’l insignia. The recreated 1930’s rig, including a newly fitted club foot jib, was led by SFMNHP Museum Technician Karnell Hillscan. With the help of a large group of volunteers, period bronze casting were designed and fabricated and wire rigging was fitted and spliced. The results speak for themselves. Drop by the Hyde Street Pier and see for yourself. In all 69 Bears were built between 1932 and 1976 by an as-sortment of professional and amateur builders. Ernie Nunes and Marty Martinson knew what they were about when they convinced Manual Nunes to build the design. SFYC Com-modore Cliff Smith called the new sloop “a bear of boat” Merry Bear, Aquatic Park Lagoon, By Teresa Maloney when she was launched in the summer of 1932. Thanks to John Muir and the staff and volunteers of Small Boat Shop at the SF Maritime NHP Merry Bear is looking great at 80. Tim Maloney San Francisco Bay Bear Boat Association, Santa Clara, CA

Olive 1957 Cheoy Lee Pacific Clipper Victor and Debra Early, Alameda

We first saw the little sloop sitting in her slip at Fortman Ma-rina in the early 2000s. She had really good lines and to us looked like a sailboat should look with a sheer sweep and overhanging bow and stern. She never seemed to leave the slip for years and years and one day my wife Debra noticed that there was a for sale sign on her. This is where the story of Olive begins with us. After a little research we discovered that she was almost all teak, except the deck, mast and oak frames. Given that she had a bright hull, bronze fittings, and all that teak, we decided to take the plunge, defying what a friend and boatbuilder had told us to “never buy a wooden boat!”

Her deck was shot so we hired Rick Bruiser to build a new one. Of course there was additional work to do including a new aft bulkhead, knee, chainplates, to-erail, rubrail, and sistering in 26 new oak frames with 550 copper rivets. Rick did a tremendous job, finishing the deck with awl-grip and custom non-skid around all the deck fittings. We had the spruce mast in our back yard in Alameda for a year to refinish. Refinishing the hull was not so bad as the prior owner had used clear polyurethane over the teak, which came off easily in giant sheets exposing the hull in all its glory. All of this took about 4 years to accomplish and we were able to participate in the 2012 Regatta last May, flying a spinnaker to third place in our division.

Next on the to-do list is to replace the keel bolts and refinish the mast (again). We are looking for-ward to sailing her on the Estuary and bay in the upcoming season.
