A few years ago in meeting in Toronto – Hines Interests VP told us “We don’t know what we don’t know. So how do we find factual information to make the intelligent decisions on what works versus promotional data? Healthy buildings require vigilant care without the opportunity for error that compromises tenant wellbeing.” (Andrew Kitchens)

What is the size of YOUR ASHRAE?

• Testing standards • Changed over time – but idea was to compare performance to another

• Filter Peddlers• Interestingly this industry is still mostly Mom & Pop distribution

• Engineering Firms• Usually are educated by the Filter Peddlers

• Public Users• Buildings, Schools, Hospitals, Turbines, Paint• education of sorts from mechanical contractors; filter peddlers and engineers

Page 36: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NBS – National Bureau of Standards

• Arrestance testing

• Measuring the amount of dust fed versus dust captured by weight to determine the percentage efficiency expressed as a value in 100% scale

• May recall the slides NAFA sold at one time that compared one 16 lb bowling ball and one pound (100) moth balls – if we catch the bowling ball only we have 94% efficient filter?

NBS Dust Spot

• Dust Spot on man made pollutant – SMUT test • Difficulty in duplication of test aerosol• Combined NBS with American Filtration Society to make

ASHRAE 52.1

ASHRAE 52-1 – Atmospheric Dust Spot Efficiency

• Barney referred to this as the SMUT test in his presentation in Dallas

• Three key parts to the test reporting • Atmospheric Dust Spot Efficiency• Arrestance efficiency• Dust Holding Capacity

Page 41: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

52-1 “Atmospheric Dust Spot Efficiency”

• Arrestance• Pressure drop Initial and Final• Initial Dust Spot Efficiency• Average Dust Spot Efficiency• Dust Holding Capacity

Page 42: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

The PERFECT filter

HEPA media square inside a wire mesh – 95% efficiency with no pressure drop!

Placement of sampling ports really make a difference when trying to sample airflow – GPC 26 is no different!

Page 43: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

Interesting facts about 52.1

• Manufacturer was allowed to choose airflow and final pressure drop for his testing

• If a filter reached within 7% of the desired value – that value could be claimed

• Led the industry with the Phrase – “a dirty filter works better than a clean one”

• Average Dust Spot of 25% should not have happened.

Page 44: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

In a White Paper from 1973 – one of the original engineers working on 52-1 said

“HVAC systems must have at least 25% Dust Spot efficiency filtration to protect coils and pans from mildew”

What was the - Average Dust Spot efficiency of a filter that started at 25% initial?

Page 45: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

What happened?

Filter peddler –We need a 25% average dust spot filter for coil cleanliness

Engineering Firms – specified 25-30% Average Dust Spot efficiency

Public Users – learned to clean coils, use pan tabs, clean ducts, eventually UVC – and as a result had little faith in the “testing information”

Page 46: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

High Efficiency Filters

• In a presentation to NAFA several years ago (published in Air Media)

• Five of the top V-cells 90-95% had initial efficiencies of • 47% - ran to 2.0” wg • 55% - Ran to 1.8” wg• 62% - Ran to 1.5” wg• 71% - ran to 1.0” wg• 81% - ran to 1.5” wg

Page 47: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

What happened?

Filter peddler –The filters are the same media area and efficiency so it is just PRICE!

Engineering firms –Specified 90-95% Average Dust Spot efficiency

Public users –Learned on-line water wash techniques, Post Op infection treatments, CDC publishes the 95% filters only provide 80% reduction of infection risk –require HEPAs

Page 48: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

Performance versus Testing?

• What happens in use that does not happen in testing?

• Who is responsible for the failure in performance when it doesn’t work?

• What is the COST of poor performance?

• What particle size are we concerned about versus catching?

Page 49: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

52-2 “Fractional Efficiency by Particle Size”

• Intent - Minimum particle size performance over the life of the filter

• Industries could identify the “killer defect” size to address their need• Listened to Public users where “average did not work”

• Unfortunately the public doesn’t know what size matters• Gave us MERV

Page 50: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

So what changed?

52.1 Dust Spot • 25-30% Dust Spot • V-cells – 90-95%

• 47% - ran to 2.0” wg • 55% - Ran to 1.8” wg• 62% - Ran to 1.5” wg• 71% - ran to 1.0” wg• 81% - ran to 1.5” wg

52.2 MERV • MERV 6-8• Same filter in 52.2

• MERV 12• MERV 12• MERV 13• MERV 13• MERV 14

Page 51: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

52.2 efficiencies

• Filters from 25% to 60% Dust Spot measured MERV 6 – 8 • Pleats – pockets – rigids all tested in same realm

• Filters from 50% - 80% Dust Spot measured MERV 11 – 12• Very few MERV 14 filters existed and next to none at MERV

16?

What happened? – we learned to manipulate the testing to get results that we liked – and “peddled” them to end users

Page 52: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

Electret vs Mechanical Efficiency

• Spirited debates – all between “peddlers” • Results of testing filters that have been in use –

• MERV 11 two and four-inch filters after three weeks, six months, one year• MERV 15 – after six months and one year• MERV 16A – after five months

What appears is that when the charge is lost there is a very big drop in performance around four – five microns. Efficiency at 250 fpm is usually 3-5 MERV values lower – Variable volume Air Handling units?

Page 53: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

Why it matters?

• Protect wet surfaces –• Target is 2-5 microns for microbes that cause fouling and biofilm growth

• Protect immunocompromised patients• Target particle size is one micron – vehicle for carrier of infectious

pollutants• Protect rotating equipment

• Target particle size should be two microns – fouling and other issues develop over long run times.

Page 54: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

ISO – 16890 ????

• Essentially the same testing procedure as 52.2• Uses the best portions/methods of the 52.2 test procedure blended with

EN 779 in Europe to achieve world wide recognized values• Adds a rating system to estimate EPA recognized pollution

values• PM – Particulate matter 10 (visibility) and 2.5 (respirable)

• Uses a discharge method for all filters tested – IPA Vapor• Already the learning curve to “test well” is advancing

Page 55: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

NAFA 2019 Annual Convention | Montreal, Canada | September 11-13

Why it matters?

• Most of the manufacturers in the room market products globally already

• Many of the distributors in the room are marketing outside the USA

• Not many in the room are capable of moving from inches water gage to pascals or bars in informative discussions – testing procedures are even more difficult to compare

Page 56: The History of Air Filter Testing and Why It Matters · Gas Phase Media Testing •ASHRAE •145.1 -2015 •Laboratory Test Method for Assessing the Performance of Gas-Phase Air-Cleaning

Failure of our Industry?

• Maintain the end users needs before our own profits• Soon legal world will be inside like the Mold is Gold seminars

• Test and verify that your own products that you sell are performing as you sold them to –

• Pull out your own products to see what is happening – share the results with your customer – and re-evaluate choices together

• Educate the public on what the particle size they need to be concerned with –

• Application Guidelines written for Why? Rather than a directive document
