Avoca Beach Picture Theatre began in 1948 in the front gardens of brothers Mervyn and Norman Hunter to raise funds to build the Avoca Beach rock pool and continued as a very welcome part of community life.
Projecting through a hole made in Norman’s garage wall onto a homemade screen, people brought cushions to soften the wooden benches. The candybar was under Mervyn’s home and when it rained, everyone tumbled onto the verandah for shelter to continue watching the film!
At a time when so many suburbs had their own cinema - 27 cinemas on the Coast - the brothers decided that a multi purpose permanent structure was needed, and the Theatre was built. It included not only the 500 seat cinema but also a Commonwealth Bank and a real estate office. Australia’s darling of the flute, Jane Rutter, will transport us to Paris in an intimate performance, sharing personal anecdotes and delicious French music and poetry from ‘La Belle Époque’ to the present day in her show French Kiss: An Australian in Paris.
Internationally acclaimed free spirit classical flautist, Jane captures the depth of sensuality with her flute. Renowned for her classical, multi-media and cabaret performances, she has taken classical music to places previously unheard of, with the consequence the name Jane Rutter is associated with the best flute music around the world.
When Jane Rutter plays not only is it beautiful flute music - every person listening feels truly embraced. Her flute declares itself in a sensual, passionate statement; her musical instrument becomes a fully expressive voice, ranging from haunting, meditative to uplifting and joyous.
Jane is accompanied by brilliant pianist Vincent Colagiuri who is widely known as a conductor and piano soloist. He has performed in many major musicals including The Phantom of the Opera, Showboat, Les Misérables, Annie, Oliver, Mamma Mia, Lion King and the list continues.

Then we have a hilarious perspective on family, love and relationships in the Italian Festival favourite WOMEN DRIVE ME CRAZY, in which the long-suffering Andrea tries to hide his family of seven overbearing women in order to win the heart of the lovely Giulia. Family Fun DayWednesday 15th January at 11am$12.50 single - $40 Family of four
A day full of fun where little munchkins explore their creative side with plaster painting, craft and jumping castles! For the grown-ups – coffee, cake and some much deserved R & R.
Top this off with the wow and wonder of Lewis the Magician on stage. His interactive show is crafted to build anticipation and awe, leaving the children surprised and curious - just how did that magic happen?
Then be taken to another time and place with the beautiful children’s classic THE PRINCESS BRIDE, a story of love and adventure, cherished by boys and girls across generations. This beloved classic fairytale begins with a grandfather reading his favorite book “The Princess Bride” to his hard-to-impress grandson, and ends with the grandson asking him to read it again! Adults love it too!
Jewish NightThursday 16th January at 7:30pm - $26.50
This is our very first Jewish Night - one full of laughs with a very Jewish flavour of fun! Following Jewish nibbles, we will delight in the vibrant Jewish performer Miriam Waks who sings in 14 languages and performs around the world. She will be singing famous Jewish songs accompanied by our grand piano.
Our film for the night is the comedy HUNTING ELEPHANTS, a box office hit in Israel and full of laughs about some old men who plan to rob a bank! Patrick Stewart nearly steals the show with his pompous, aristocratic thespian ‘What’s my motivation?’ he asks as they’re plotting the bank heist, and ‘You promised me a monologue!’ Some of his scenes from Hunting Elephants have become youtube hits and you will certainly see why on the night!
