Navigation – troubleshootingThe following information provides examples ofsituations in which the navigation system maynot seem to be functioning properly.

The vehicle’s position on the map isincorrectSensus Navigation uses the Global PositioningSystem (GPS), which indicates the vehicle’s posi-tion with an accuracy of about 65 feet(20 meters).

Accuracy may be even less when driving on roadslying parallel to another road, winding roads, roads on several levels, and also after driving along distance without making any distinct turns.

Tall buildings and mountains, tunnels, viaducts,over/underpasses etc., also have a negativeaffect on the reception of GPS signals, whichmeans that the estimation of the vehicle’s posi-tion may not be precise.

The system does not always calculatethe fastest/shortest routeParameters such as distance, width of road, typeof road, number of right or left turns, traffic circlesetc., are all taken into account when calculatingthe best theoretical route. Experience and localknowledge may, however, lead to a better choiceof route.

The system chooses toll roads, freeways, and ferries even though Ihave opted to avoid themWhen calculating routes over longer distances, for technical reasons the system can only usemajor roads.

If you opt to avoid for toll roads and freeways, they will be avoided as much as possible, but willbe used if no other reasonable alternative isavailable.

After being transported, the vehicle’sposition on the map is incorrectIf the vehicle is transported, for example by ferryor train, or in such a way as to impede the recep-tion of GPS signals, it can take up to 5 minutesto calculate the car’s new position correctly.

The vehicle’s position on the map isincorrect after its battery has beendisconnectedIf power has been cut from the GPS antenna, itcan take more than 5 minutes for the GPS sig-nals to be received correctly and the vehicle’sposition to be calculated.

The "car" symbol on the map moveserratically after a tire changeIn addition to the GPS receiver, the vehicle’sspeedometer and an onboard gyro are also usedto calculate the vehicle’s current location anddirection of travel. If the spare tire is put on the

vehicle, or if a change is made from summer towinter tires (or vice versa), the navigation systemmust "learn" the new dimensions of the tire(s).

Therefore, it may be necessary to drive for severalmiles, including a number of full turns, for thesystem to make this adjustment.

The map image does not correspond toactual conditionsFactors such as the constant expansion andrebuilding of the road network, new traffic regula-tions constantly being introduced etc., mean thatthe digital map database is not always complete.

The map database is enhance and updated regu-larly. Please contact your Volvo retailer for moreinformation about availability.

See also support.volvocars.com for additionalinformation about maps, etc.

The map scale sometimes changesThere may not be detailed map information forcertain areas. If such cases, the system automati-cally changes the map scale.

The "car" symbol on screen jumpsforward or spinsThe system may need a few seconds to sensethe vehicle's position and movement before youbegin driving.

Switch off the ignition. Restart the engine butwait for a short period before beginning to drive.

I am planning a long trip but do notwant to specify a route to the cities thatI will be passing through. What is theeasiest way to set up an itinerary?Select the final destination directly on the mapusing the cursor. The system will automaticallyguide you to the final destination even if you drivepast intermediate destinations.

The system’s map information is notup-to-dateContact your Volvo retailer about updating mapinformation.
