Dear Saint Jude Family and Friends,

As I reflect on the end of another school year, it brings me great joy to think

of our many accomplishments. From welcoming new families in August,

celebrating the lives of the saints in November, sending 11,800 meals

to children in Swaziland during Catholic Schools Week, walking with

Christ during His final hours as our 8th Graders lead the Living

Stations in the spring, celebrating First Holy Eucharist with our

2nd Graders, and graduating 47 wonderful young men and women in

May, we are grateful for the learning, loving, and laughter of each day.

I am delighted to share our 2017-2018 Annual Report with you. We

began our school year with 100% participation in the Annual Fund from

our Faculty and Staff and ended the year with 100% parent participation for

the third consecutive year! Your generosity and continued financial support

make much possible for so many. Thank you!

Our wonderful volunteers continue to bring to reality the plans and ideas for

all to enjoy. Thank you for giving so selflessly of your time and talents. Your

dedication, support, and commitment are the true embodiment of Christ’s

spirit alive in our midst. The PTA Shine Auction has funded the update of

the entire campus to LED lighting and replaced the aging air conditioner in

the gym. Thank you for your support of this fun event!

The Saint Jude Faculty and Staff are outstanding individuals who continue

to make Saint Jude a School of Excellence. It is my pleasure to work with

these dedicated and enthusiastic men and women. They are devoted to the

academic progress and the spiritual growth of the children entrusted to

them. May God continue to bless their work!

It takes many people to make our school a success. I sincerely offer my

appreciation for all that you do for the children of Saint Jude the Apostle

Catholic School. I look forward to another great school year filled with

exciting new challenges and bountiful rewards!

God Bless,

Patty Childs, Principal

Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School was established in 1962 as part of Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. As a parish school, we serve as an extension of the church community aiding in the formation of citizens willing and able to serve God and live as useful members of society.

Serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade, our teachers average 15 years of teaching experience. The curriculum includes religion and all required elementary school subjects. In addition, computer, Spanish and French enrichment, physical education, chorus, art, drama, and band are offered.

Saint Jude recognizes the value of technology in the classroom as a teaching tool for our students to develop the skills and attributes they need to meet their own current and future goals. Here are some of the ways technology is utilized by students:

In grades K-2, a set of eight iPads can be found in each classroom. Students use them for learning centers or in combination with a cart of iPads so students can work in pairs or individually. The primary grades also have access to a cart of 30 Chromebooks to complete student work.

In grades 3-5, students have access to iPads and Chromebooks in the classroom to enhance learning, complete assignments, and create multimedia projects. Each grade has one iPad cart and one Chromebook cart.

6th, 7th, & 8th grade students take part in a 1:1 Chromebook program where they access learning resources, class notes, teacher communication, and other information on a daily basis.

All classrooms contain an interactive LCD Projector/whiteboard that is connected to the teacher computer for viewing class materials and curriculum resources.

Enrichment classes such as foreign language, art, and music have access to a class set of iPads and Chromebooks for student use to augment these subject areas.

All grade levels attend the Technology Lab for instruction once a week. Teachers may sign up for additional weekly time slots as needed for student research and project completion. The Tech Lab houses 34 Chromebooks and two 3-D printers.

The Media Center provides 30 Chromebooks for online student research and access to our library management system. The Media Center is also equipped with a state-of-the-art broadcast studio. The student-led news crew delivers a Morning Prayer and News Show.

Future City:For the fourth time in the past five years, a Future City team from Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School won first place in the regional Future City competition and represented the State of Georgia at the World Competition in Washington, DC.

Future City is one of the nation’s leading engineering educational programs. Its purpose is to encourage middle school students to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and starts with a question...How can we make the world a better place? This year’s challenge was for the students to envision The Age Friendly City and address the trials in designing innovative solutions that could serve an urban area’s older

After finishing first in the regional contest, a team of fourth and fifth graders from Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School placed second in the state Odyssey of the Mind (OOTM)competition. In May, they traveled to Ames, Iowa to compete in the World Competition. There were over 240 teams from nearly every state in the U.S. and approximately 25 other countries competing.

OOTM is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from

population and keep them engaged and independent. The students must imagine, research, design, and build their city of the future to showcase a solution.

At the competition, the teams present their vision of the future through a virtual city design (using SimCity™ software), a 1500-word essay, a scale model of their city (built with recycled materials), and

a short oral presentation to a panel of STEM professionals. There is a spending limit of $100 to complete the task. The Saint Jude winning team consisted of 7th graders Alex Guigou, Caoimhina Sloan, and Christina Sweeney, and was guided by school STEM faculty advisor Eleonora Straub along with coaches Peter Sloan and Stephanie Sweeney. In addition to coming in first overall at the 26th annual

regional competition, the team brought home three special awards: Best Team Presentation, Most Innovative Power Generation, and Best Research Essay. Upon returning home from Washington, the team was invited to the office of Georgia’s Representative for the 6th district, Karen Handel, where they were honored to present their city named GRACE Springs to the Congresswoman.

kudosThe Florida-based educational program, Circus of the Kids, once again visited Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School in September. In less than three weeks , middle school students were introduced to, practiced, and perfected such acts as trapeze, acrobatics, various balancing acts, aerial silks, Spanish web, juggling, and more! Talk about courage! At the end of their three weeks of practice, they presented a “Cirque de Soleil” type circus to the school and community.

According to principal Patty Childs, participants in the circus learn more than just physical stunts…they learn the value of trying new things and the courage that comes with the mastery of a new skill. They are then able to teach their friends and families the power of a “can-do” attitude.

Circus of the Kids is a unique, kid bonding, community building, lesson teaching, life-changing experience for all involved. We use circus as the medium to teach and reinforce valuable skills.

kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve one of five problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Coaches are allowed to facilitate, but may not contribute thoughts or help the team execute ideas. During OOTM competitions, young people are encouraged to meet new friends and to watch and learn from the ideas of others.

Team Rodriguez created a humorous 8-minute performance

for the problem “A Stellar Hangout,” featuring the man in the moon and original intergalactic creatures in search of out of this world food and stellar entertainment, while on a mission to locate the elusive space treasure. Another component of the competition requires that the team solve a spontaneous problem that is known just moments before judging.

Members of the team, coached by Mike Rodriguez and Brent Bellows, included: Will Bellows, Vince Calia, Becca Jose, Alex Rodriguez, Jack Rodriguez, and Emma Schramm.

❶ Team Work: The kids in each act are interdependent on each other.

❷ Perseverance: Circus, in some form, hurts – stick with it, it’s worth it.

❸ Stage Presence: enough said!

❹ Commitment: You made a commitment to this show, stick with it.

During Catholic Schools Week, January 28 to February 3, in partnership with NCEA (National Catholic Educational Association), Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School participated in a 24-hour Day of Giving event titled, Many Gifts, One Nation – A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools campaign. We achieved our goal and raised $10,000! All proceeds from the Day of Giving went toward a brand new STEM Lab mobile cart. With a focus on the future, these STEM resources will further enrich our technology curriculum here at Saint Jude School.

We are immensely grateful to our parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff who supported this special day of giving during Catholic Schools Week! Please know your gifts will have a direct impact on the success of our students.

In June, Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School hosted Camp Invention. Ninety

students participated in over 32 hours of STEM instruction delivered by Saint Jude

teachers. Second grade teacher, Mrs. Wenke, said “This program has changed how I

will present STEM to my students. I have so many great ideas for the new school year!”

In July, Mrs. Childs, Mrs. Perez, Mrs. Straub, Mrs. Montesi, Mrs. Ward, and Mrs.

Malone traveled to Philadelphia for the National Science Teachers Association STEM

Conference. Combined, they attended 60 sessions on STEM best practices, lesson ideas,

and hands-on workshops. “We have learned so much to take back and share with the

rest of the staff,” said Mrs. Childs.

In August, we start the new year with an increased focus on STEM. Students will

begin exploring robotics in all grades, made possible by the $10,000 gift from the

Day of Giving.

In April, our 8th grade students served the homeless a boxed breakfast of hot scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, a peanut butter sandwich, and fruit. Agape Way Ministry is a Christian organization that also shares the gospel with those they serve. Their mission is to love and share fellowship with people who come from the surrounding community.

7 The Ronald McDonald House This year, our 7th graders went to The Ronald McDonald House where the students prepared, cooked, and served dinner for all the families staying in the house. They also hosted a fun activity night with the children at the house where they played games and organized arts and crafts.

8Daffodil ProjectThe 8th grade class took part in the Daffodil Project. This service project aspires to build a Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils around the world in memory of the 1.5 million children who were murdered during the Holocaust. The first daffodils were planted in 2010; to date; over 290,000 have been planted worldwide. Our students added 500 daffodils to the count this year, planting them along the path of the Stations of the Cross between the rectory and school.

Annual Fund giving is a financial priority for our school. It is a tax-deductible opportunity for donors to help make a difference in the future of Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School.

Gifts are unrestricted and added to the school’s budget to meet current operating expenses, to enhance the programs and services offered to students, and to maintain the school building.

The Annual Fund offsets the difference between tuition and the cost to educate each student.

Saint Jude does not receive a subsidy from either the parish or the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Each family is asked to contribute at a level appropriate for their financial situation. Our goal is 100% parent, faculty, and staff participation.

Endowment Fund giving is an opportunity to invest in the future of Saint Jude School and an excellent way to invest in the future of Catholic education. Benefits of the Endowment Fund are perpetual, and as the Endowment grows, so does the school’s ability to carry on its mission.

The Endowment Fund was established in 2002 to ensure the future financial stability of Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School. Memorial and honorary gifts can be allocated to the Endowment Fund at any time.

Guardian Angel Fund A donation to this fund provides a tax-deductible opportunity for donors and allows them to make a direct impact on a current student’s ability to continue to pursue a Catholic education. Donors may provide full or partial tuition scholarships for a student or students in a family that demonstrates financial need.

St. Martin Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 to provide financial assistance for current Saint Jude School families who are experiencing an unexpected life crisis such as divorce, job loss, or death in the family.

Emily Johnston Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 by the Saint Jude Home and School Association in memory of Mrs. Emily Johnston, much-loved school librarian for 19 years. The fund provides tuition assistance to Saint Jude School families who demonstrate financial need.

Elizabeth Huffner Angel Fund was established in 2010 by Don Huffner in loving memory of his wife, Elizabeth, a former Saint Jude teacher. A scholarship is awarded each year to a current 5th grade student who possesses similar qualities as Elizabeth, particularly her love of literature.

Elizabeth “Bitsy” Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by Kathy Davis Pepe in loving memory of her daughter, Bitsy, who was a student at Saint Jude and a graduate of Marist School. Kathy Davis Pepe taught 5th grade at Saint Jude for 20+ years and established this scholarship in Bitsy’s memory to be presented to a 5th grade girl who displays enthusiasm for life, is fun-loving, yet a rule follower, and is kind to everyone – all qualities Bitsy displayed during her life.

Regina Hersey Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Brian Hersey to honor his cherished wife, Regina. Regina made such an impact on the Saint Jude School community and was greatly admired by faculty, parents, and students. Her selflessness and dedication were so evident in all

of her endeavors. This scholarship is presented to a deserving student whose family is actively involved with the PTA and school community.

Dr. Amy Bennett Bellows Book and Scholarship Award was established in 2013 by Brent R. Bellows in loving memory of his treasured wife, Amy. Amy was the proud mother of Jack and Will Bellows and was active in all aspects of their lives. Amy was also an avid Saint Jude School volunteer. Each year, a book and scholarship will be awarded to a 4th grade girl and boy committed to reading, achieving academic excellence, and loving God—all virtues Amy cherished, lived by, and strived to instill in her children each and every day.

Liz And Bill Oliver Memorial Scholarship Award was established in 2016 by long-time Saint Jude parishioner, Bill Oliver, to honor his cherished wife, Liz. This scholarship award is given annually to a current seventh grader who goes above and beyond his or her service hour requirements and is, overall, a well-rounded student. As helping others was near and dear to Liz, this award was established to recognize a student who has made an impact in the community through dedicated service to others.

Appreciated Securities Gifts of marketable stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have appreciated in value may help donors avoid capital gains taxes and allow donors to make a larger gift to Saint Jude School.

Bequests Donors can leave a legacy by remembering Saint Jude School in their will. A charitable bequest in a will can benefit Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School while saving donors estate tax dollars.

Our goal is to afford qualifying

families a quality education

while providing donors with

an opportunity to use their tax

dollars towards Catholic school

scholarships.

GRACE Scholars is a Georgia

nonprofit corporation and tax

exempt charity. GRACE has met

the requirements for designation

as a student scholarship

organization (SSO) in Georgia.

Because GRACE is an SSO,

Georgia taxpayers can redirect

part of their tax liability to

GRACE and qualify for a generous

tax benefit created by the Georgia

legislature – a 100 percent tax

credit. As GRACE is a tax exempt

charity (501-c-3 organization),

gifts to GRACE also qualify as

charitable contributions under

federal law.

GRACE Scholars was founded by

Georgia’s Catholic Bishops in 2008

to take advantage of the SSO/

tax credit legislation. It is the

beloved initiative of Archbishop

Wilton Gregory of Atlanta and

Bishop Gregory Hartmayer of

Savannah. Since 2008, more than

6,550 taxpayers have redirected

part of their Georgia income

taxes to GRACE which, in turn,

has awarded scholarships to

students wishing to attend Georgia

Catholic Schools. All students

receiving GRACE awards have

demonstrated financial need.

The mission of

GRACE Scholars,

Inc. is to provide

children from

families with

financial need

throughout the

State of Georgia

with greater

opportunities to

secure a quality

PK-12 Catholic

education.

* The school has historically accrued for future capital expenditures on an annual basis. At the Archdiocese’s request, the capital reserve has been reversed into income. Future capital expenditures will be reflected as an expense when incurred. Note that the school will continue to fund cash reserves for future capital expenditures on an annual basis.

** A portion of the operating surplus will be allocated to cash reserves for future capital expenditures and the endowment fund. The remainder will be used for technology upgrades and continuing professional education.

If we don’t teach our

children to

follow Christ,

the world will teach

them not to.

Dear Parents and Families,

Thank you for partnering with Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School to

teach your children to follow Christ.

Through your dedication to a Catholic education for your family, together we

will strive to prepare them for a life of service, leadership, scholarship, and

love of our faith.

As you know, we have the best school in the Archdiocese! So, you can be

confident that our wonderful principal, Patty Childs, our dedicated front

office team, and our talented teachers and staff will continue to work with

the best interest of our students always at the forefront of their minds and

hearts. As pastor, I am very proud of our school’s accomplishments and plans!

Catholic education is alive and well here at Saint Jude the Apostle parish –

and thank God for that!

I look forward to seeing your children at school and at church. May our

patron, Saint Jude, guide and protect you and your family always.

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor W. Joseph Corbett

Pastor
