Story

Chapter 1 A Place to Skate by Elise Mariel del Fuego

Newburyport, Massachusetts is a great place to grow up. There are lots of things for kids

to do, especially if they like sports. There are soccer

fields and martial arts studios. There are a couple of

places to learn gymnastics. Newburyport is near the

ocean, so there are lots of beaches for swimming. Some

people even surf!

But before the year 2001, Newburyport was

missing something a place for skateboarders to skate. Some skaters gathered at a local

shopping mall. In front, there was a curved cement wall, like a quarter-pipe. Shoppers

sometimes had to move aside as the skaters flew by. Store owners got upset when kids skated

in front of their stores. They put up signs that said No skateboarding. Police take notice.

Other kids tried to skate at playgrounds.

Playgrounds are great for freestyle moves. There

are slides and see-saws with inclines. Parents with

small children got upset. They didnt want

skateboarders at the playground. They were afraid

the skaters would knock their children over. Some

parents complained, and then skateboarders were

not allowed at playgrounds either.

Skateboarders in Newburyport needed a

place to go. Some kids and parents decided to

build a skate park. They formed a group. They

called it Friends of the Newburyport Skatepark.

The group knew they had to raise money to build

the park. They had dinners, yard sales, and car

washes to raise money. They also had some

skating events. People paid to watch these events. Some people gave a lot of money. One of

those people was a sports store owner who lived near Newburyport. He believed that the kids

needed a place to skate. Besides money, he also

gave his time. He helped the group put together

plans for the skate park.

The Friends group found a company in Oregon to

create the plans for the park. The Oregon

company had built popular skate parks in

California. This company designed a beautiful

cement skate park with big, connecting bowls.

The Friends group now had to present the plans

to the town government.

The Friends group had many meetings with

the town government. Kids stood up at the

meetings and talked about why the town needed

a skate park. There were meetings about where

the park should be. Finally, the town decided to

put the park near the Middle School. Some people

were worried about noise. The town government

decided that the park would only be open when

school is closed. But they agreed that the skate park could be built!

Newburyport now has a beautiful, clean, free outdoor skate park. The Friends group,

skaters and parents work with the town to run it. Everyone agrees that it is a great place to

skate!

Chapter 2 Skateboarding! by Ellen Chapman

Some people think skateboarding is a new sport, but it really is not. Skateboarding

began in California in the 1950s. Surfers wanted a way to

practice on land when the ocean was rough. They also

needed to practice when there were no waves. They

worked hard to make surf boards they could use on

land. They tried out different sizes and shapes of wood

boards. They tried out different sizes and kinds of wheels.

Finally, the surfers made perfect boards. They began to

sell them as skateboards. Soon, lots of p eople were skateboarding.

Today, there are about 18.5 million skateboarders around the world. Most of them live

in the United States. Most of them are male and

under the age of 18. Go Skateboarding Day

started in 2004. It is on June 21st. Skaters use that

day to show off their sport.

You will often see skaters in playgrounds or

shopping centers. Skateboard parks, or skate parks,

were invented in the 1970s. Before that, some

skaters would skate in empty swimming pools. Sometimes

they skated in large cement pipes. Today, skate parks are

the safest places to practice moves.

Skate parks are usually made out of cement. At a

skate park, you might find ramps, half-pipes and quarter-

pipes. Most skate parks have at least one bowl. A bowl

looks like an empty swimming pool with curved sides. Many

skate parks also have a fun box. A fun box is a platform

with one or more ramps. Lots of different tricks can be

done on a fun box.

There are many skateboard moves. An ollie is a move where a skater pops the board

into the air. It looks like the skater is jumping with the board stuck to his or her feet. A heel

flip is an ollie with a twist. The skater kicks the board to make it flip under him or her.

Sometimes these tricks are done while freestyle skating. Free style skating is just skating on a

flat area. A freestyle skater does not use a bowl or fun box.

Skateboarding is a lot of fun. Skateboarders probably dont think much about the history

of the sport. They are focused on the moves and the fun. But it all started with surfers from

the 1950s, who were looking for a little fun on land!

Chapter 3 The History of Sports by Catherine Keyes

Skateboarding is another sport that has a long

history. Skateboarding developed from surfing.

Surfing began in the Polynesian Islands of the Pacific

Ocean. The earliest settlers on these islands came

from Asia. They travelled in canoes from island to

island. They brought sports with them, like playing in

the surf on boards.

The art of standing on boards was perfected on

the island of Hawaii. European explorer Captain Cook

reported seeing surfers when he arrived there in 1778.

The sport interested other visitors, as well: in 1866, the

writer Mark Twain tried it.

Hawaiis Duke Kahanamoku won Olympic gold

medals for the United States in swimming in 1912 and

1920. He brought surfing to the American mainland at

that time. People were thrilled by his surfboard tricks and stunts at beaches in California.

Thousands of Californians rushed to try the new sport. By the 1950s, surfing was very popular.

Surfers wanted to practice when the ocean was rough, or when there were no waves. In

the late 1950s, sidewalk surfing was developed. We now call this sport skateboarding. For

surfers, sidewalk surfing was a way to re-create the feeling of riding a wave. Once people

began making and selling skateboards, everyone could have that feeling. Skateboarding

became very popular almost overnight.

Skateboarding is just one sport that has roots

that stretch back for centuries. Today, we play many

sports baseball, soccer, lacrosse, martial arts that

have roots in ancient times. We may play them

differently than people did long ago. But we still play

them for exercise, for fun, and for the thrill of

competition.

Chapter 4 Surprise Moves by Catherince Helck

Every Friday after school, Andre, Ty, and I go

skateboarding at Dunn Park. Its an awesome park. We like

nothing better than chilling out together and practicing our

moves.

None of us is an expert skater. But when you add our

skills together, we make a good team. Andre knows the best tricks. He is the only one who can

do a great Ollie, and he is working on a heelflip to end it. Ty is our artistic king, cutting great

curves as he races forward. I love to fly downhill, so I always head for the half-pipe.

Dunn Park is a great place to skate. Theres a half -pipe, a bowl, rails, and a fun box. It is

in a regular park, so there are great places to go freestyle.

People around school know they can find us at Dunn.

They know how much the three of us love to board. They

also know how tight we are. Were always together just the

three of us. Were kind of a skateboarding team.

A couple of weeks ago, we accepted a friendly

challenge from Tys cousin, Chris. Chris is a skater too. Were

going to comp ete against Chriss team. We want to find out

which is the best. Were just doing it for fun. We know the

three of us are pretty good and strong. Still, we hear that the

other team has some freestyle moves we dont. So were

working on getting better quickly.

Something crazy happened at Dunn Park yesterday. I will never forget it. When we got

to the park, Ty saw Natalie, a new girl in school. Usually, the three of us have the park to

ourselves. But there she was, skating all by herself. She saw us and shou ted out, Hey, watch

this! and hiked over a picnic table, goofyfoot first. Then she started navigating around curbs

and stairs. Ty gave a little grunt of surprise. Andres eyes were popping out of his head. I have

to admit, so were mine. Natalie had better freestyle moves than all three of us put together.

I cleared my throat and said, You know, we have a little competition coming up in a

week Andre added, and our team can have up to four members Ty stayed quiet the

longest. Well, he said, She is new and all. Maybe we should just give her a try. So we did

something that we never, ever thought wed do. We invited her to join our team. Her, as in a

girl.

You know what? She said, Sure. On the day of the meet, we are going to be so much

better because she is on our team. I have to admit, weve already gotten better just trying to

keep up with her. And by the way, there was something Ty forgot to mention about his cousin:

Chris is short for Christine!
