Message from Pastor Carl Wilfrid
Dear Friends of the Good Shepherd:
In the coming weeks there will be some, perhaps much, talk about money. The Budget Team is aiming to give us a report by October 30. Our annual Commitment Sunday will be November 13. It makes some glad, some mad, and some sad, but in the life of our church it’s “that time of year” again, time to talk about money.
As I approach retirement I wish I had more money. Some might scold me, “Pastor Carl, life is about more than money! Open your eyes! Your wife, Dianne, is healthy 18 years after cancer surgery; your daughters are bright people serving others in their careers and families, and happily married. You have lived long enough to enjoy a grandson. You should be grateful. You should thank God.”
I am grateful. I do thank God frequently as I count my blessings. Yes, I understand that life is about much more than money. But...life is also about money. Dianne’s surgery and post-surgical treatment weren’t free; they cost money. “Feducating” my daughters (“feducating” is short for “feeding, clothing, sheltering, and educating”) took lots of money. St. Olaf College isn’t cheap, and neither is U.C. Davis. Those weddings, feeding beloved friends, family, and strangers, cost money, even as I thank God for sons-in-law who bless our daughters and us. And that grandson, Sam, already has an edu-cation savings account, and his first words were, “Grandpa, Grandma, will you please put some money toward my education!”
In the same way, being part of Christ’s Body, the church, is about way more than money. It’s about faith, hope, and love. It’s about “thank you, God” and “let me help you, neighbor.” It’s about repentance and forgiveness, patience, and truthful-ness. It’s about an anchor in a rapidly changing world, and about embracing change in church as a gift from God. Church is about way more than money. But...church is also about money.
And those who haven't made friends with that fact
haven’t made friends with Incarnation, with God-
become-flesh, with God entering into this world and
getting so tangled up in the stuff of this world that a
neat, tidy separation is impossible!
Pledge Sunday November 13
On November13 at all services we will have the opportu-
nity to make our financial commitments to support God’s work through Good Shepherd Church in 2012. In the midst of economic struggle and anxiety we will express
our faith and hope in God in this bold act.
NOVEMBER 2011 Shepherd’s Voice Page 3
Budget Team Report
If you were at the congregational meeting on September 25, you heard about the Budget Team that would be working early this year, before the giving pledges are received rather than after. This is a time of transition for Good Shepherd in our building and our staffing; moving forward in both will mean new opportunities, costs, and investments of time and money.
In early November, people will be invited to make a pledge of giving for 2012. As you consider how your gifts of money, time, and talents might be a part of God’s work in and through Good Shepherd, we want you to be informed and inspired by some sketches of what our ministry could look like with different levels of income.
The team is preparing to present those “sketches” to the con-gregation on Sunday, October 30. As an update on our work this past month, here are some answers to questions you might have.
What will happen on the 30th?
Everyone will receive a two-page summary of three different budgeting scenarios:
• A Brown-Bag Budget, slightly lower than the 2011 level
• A Buffet Budget, 9% above 2011 (but still 5% less than 2010)
• A Steakhouse budget (14% higher than the 2010 budget)
If you prefer a different metaphor than food, one of our team members compared it to choosing options on a new car; similar to showing what “options” you can get at different prices, these three different scenarios are sketches of our ministry and organization at different income levels. Also on the 30th, people will be invited to hear a brief, 15-minute presentation after each worship service, with optional Q & A time to follow.
What does the team hope you’ll do with this information?
We hope you’ll pray with this, get excited about the pos-sibilities, and ask questions of the budget team and church staff. Growth in ministry usually means growth in staff and costs, and a “growing” budget can be scary, especially in tough economic times. It can be tempting to “save as much money as we can” and declare the lowest budget “good enough.” However, we are called to God’s work; that is our reason for being as a church. And, our new building marks a commitment to growing in the amount and kinds of God’s work we can do together. Our Buffet and Steakhouse budgets help us imagine what that growth could look like—if not yet fully in 2012, then moving toward it gradually.
Thank you for entrusting us with this work. We look for-ward to talking with you about it on the 30th and be-yond.
Sincerely,
The 2012 Budget Team:

October 2011 Update
By Larry Beerman
Q & D Construction adjusted their schedule slightly with
the rain early in October. By mid month the exterior wall
board was in place. Brick work originally scheduled for early
in the month was rescheduled for the latter part of the
month. This will be followed by the stucco application
above the red brick. The metal roof is in place and ready
for the roofing material. The wood roof over the old Shep-
herds’ Room was removed and new roofing materials
applied. The underground electrical service has been run
under the alley and the enclosures for the electrical trans-
former and the trash container have been constructed.
Water and Sewer connections to main lines under California
Avenue are scheduled for late October. Concrete has been
poured for the main entry on Clay Street and the ADA
ramp along the north wall of the new building. The steel
tower for the new cross is in place. Q & D’s goal is to get
the building enclosed before winter weather sets in.
Inside, most of the rough plumbing is complete, rough elec-
trical work is underway and the fire sprinkler system is
being installed throughout the old building and the new
building. Duct work for the HVAC in the new building is
on site and being installed. The two boilers and the heating
system in the old building will be refurbished, including
new plumbing to heat the Choir Room.
The multi level floor for the future kitchen has been
removed and is being replaced with a level floor. This
required modifications in the north end basement walls to
support the new floor above. Q&D will install a new grid
ceiling in that portion of the basement and reinstall the ex-
isting light fixtures and speaker system.
In early November the window framing and glass will be
installed. Weather and sound insulation will be installed
and interior sheet rock will be hung followed by taping and
texturing. The recessed projection screen will be installed
prior to the ceiling sheet rock application. Final metal
roofing materials will be installed in November and the ex-
terior signs will be installed on the south and east brick
walls.
“GET IT BUILT” TEAM DECISIONS
During October the GIB team focused on many of the
aesthetic details in the building. The seating was ordered in
August and a sample can be seen at the Ministry Center on
Clay Street, along with the architect’s sample board showing
the materials and colors approved for the building. The
Liturgical Furniture, including the Altar, Ambo (Lectern),
and Baptismal Font have been selected; stainless steel
kitchen appliances have been ordered; the portable platform
for the altar and ambo, choir and band has been ordered;
the Audio/Video contract is in place and the audio system
and video equipment will be ordered in November. The
Liturgical Design team is in the midst of searching for a
stained glass artist to produce concepts to be considered for
future stained glass in the windows facing Clay Street.

Building Together Update
NOVEMBER 2011 Shepherd’s Voice Page 5
It's Not So Bad
Since I went to the very last service held in our old chapel, I thought I should force myself to go on the first day of wor-ship at Q&D. I was afraid that since I was a reluctant participant in this whole thing, that if I delayed going, I just might not ever do it. So off I went, prepared to hate it because I'm not a fan of abrupt change at all. Slow and gradual, almost imperceptable change is best for me. So here I am at Q&D. Well, that wasn't so hard to find. And, getting to worship seemed pretty easy. Oh, no. Not a giant conference room. Oh, well, I'm here, let's see how it goes.
All my friends are here. There's the altar and the band. We all look a little uncomfortable as we settle into our folding chairs. I really like pews, and as I sit in this chair, I remind myself that we are going to have chairs forever now. Good thing I got one of the little pews from the church so I won't forget what they were like. It's awfully bright in here. In fact, it's jarringly bright after all my years of subtle lighting in the chapel. But, it's nice to be able to see everyone with the way the chairs are configured.
Pastor Carl let's us know how this is going to work, sort of, as he reminds us that we are all in a new land together and we will learn it together. The service is instantly comforting because it is the same. The songs are familiar. The message tells us to adjust to being strangers in a new land. Communion is a flurry of people not knowing where to go, but we get it all accomplished even if it is mass confusion. It's very strange here, but maybe it won't be too bad.
As the summer progresses, and now fall is here, this new land isn't new at all anymore. I know where the prayer cards are. We've figured out how to take communion without falling over anyone or anything. All my friends are here. The messages talk directly to me just like they always did. I love the music. I can put up with the chairs. I still don't know where to put the hymnal, but it doesn't seem so difficult anymore. I think the holidays will feel strange, but what's one more challenge for these wanderers?
This whole process has reminded me that the Lord moves us in His direction not ours. He thought we needed to
change things up, and with faith in Him, that's exactly what
has happened. And what's next for us? Another change when we move back to California and Arlington to another learning experience as we settle into our new home.
And, being at Q&D will simply prepare us to deal with change.
So, I guess it's not so bad.
But, could we take the parking lot back with us, please?

Intergenerational Ministry
Advent Festival Sunday, December 4 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
We often hurry and scurry at this time of year anxiously preparing our homes with decorations, gifts and treats for the Christmas season, but with all the hustle and bustle, are our hearts prepared for Christmas? Advent reminds us of the true “Reason for the Season”, the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Advent is a time of eager anticipation, prepa-ration and celebration. All are invited to celebrate at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on Sunday, De-cember 4th!
Please join us for a festive afternoon of crafts, activities, cookies, cider, fellowship (and maybe a little caroling too)! Crafts and activities will be geared towards children, but all are encouraged to attend and participate in this intergenera-tional event! The Advent Festival will be held in the Clay Street church offices and classrooms. We are in need of several adult and youth volunteers to help with crafts and activities. If you can lend a hand, please contact Kristin Lessard at [email protected] or 329-0696 x: 104. Let us all share in the Christmas spirit as we prepare for the birth of our King!
Coming this month: “The Gap”
an intergenerational Advent play You won’t want to miss the annual Advent play on its earlier date this year: November 20, the Sunday before Thanksgiv-ing, at all worship services. We have a cast drawing from all three services too, from age 5 to grandparents—all working together to share the good news for the Advent season. Just before Christians begin getting ready for Christ’s coming, they’ll remind us why Jesus was born in the first place!

ASSISTANT TO THE BISHOP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
AND ADVOCACY TO VISIT RENO
By Sheila Freed
"The eternal God is always acting in our present, blessing us with the Gospel of Jesus and leading us to discover that today is a time of great opportunities to explore, dreams to make reality, new missions to start and new ministries to be open in every congregation."
These are the hopeful words of Rev. Jose Luis la Torre-Cuadros, who will visit Reno November 21st and 22nd. Pastor Jose Luis was recently appointed to the Bishop's staff at Sierra Pacific Synod. As a Bishop's Assistant, he focuses on issues of justice and the commu-nity, and serves as the Bishop's liaison to Lutheran Advo-cacy Ministry in Nevada, Lutheran Office of Public Policy, Lutheran Social Services, and the Leadership Discipling Team.
LAMN is very excited at the prospect of meeting with Rev. Jose Luis la Torre-Cuadros on November 22nd. We will have the opportunity to orient Pastor Jose Luis on the way our state government operates, and how LAMN operates, both very different from the situation with which he is familiar in California. We will explain how LAMN and our ecumenical partner Religious Alliance in Nevada have gained credibility and access at the Legislature through the hard work of our Advocate, Larry Struve. We will out-line some of our legislative successes, and how we hope to build on those successes in the future. We will also discuss the challenges we face, mainly reduced funding and the need for more people to help. LAMN, like other groups working for justice, finds itself in a political, economic and social environment that seems to need more reform all the time, in spite of our best efforts.
So we are hopeful that Pastor Jose Luis will have not only a faith-filled message of hope, but also some creative ideas to help us move forward. There will be a "working lunch" with the Bishop’s Assistant at Faith Lutheran at noon on November 22, 2011. Supporters of LAMN are in-vited to attend. Please email [email protected] to make a reservation.
Caring for Others
Pastor Jose Luis was born in Lima, Peru. He earned a de-gree in Law and Political Science from San Marcos Univer-sity, then attended the Evangelical Seminary of Lima, and was ordained in 1998. His last call in Peru was to the Lu-theran Congregation Christo Rey in Lima, and since 2005, Pastor Jose Luis has served as the Hispanic Ministry Pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento. He has also served as Dean of the Sacramento Conference and a mem-ber at large of the Synod Council.
2nd Mile Giving for November 20
Every month on the third Sunday we take a special offering called the “2nd Mile Offering” which is over and above the regular offerings received. This offering is collected in special baskets made for us by the women of our sister parish in Rwanda. Each month we focus on a different ministry or congregation in our Synod.
The November offering will be distributed as follows:
1/3 to Lutheran Social Services
1/3 to feed hungry people locally (Project Lazarus)
1/3 to feed hungry people worldwide (ELCA Hunger Ap-peal)
Shared Harvest What is Shared Harvest? It is a joint ministry of several local Lutheran churches who bring food once a month to some work-ing-poor families that live in selected hotels on 4th St. They deliver between 50-80 bags of groceries a month.

Message to Staff:
THE GOOD NEWS TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The Good News Team is working on several projects, and we are excited to hear what you think.
We are working on ways to welcome new members, visitors to Good Shepherd, and each other. Part of that includes the welcome space in the new building. But what is welcoming to one of us might turn another away from Good Shepherd. So what does it mean to be welcoming? Here's where we need you: please think about the time when you felt the most welcome, either at Good Shepherd or at another church. What made that experience so welcoming for you? Was it a friendly face? Good food? Something in the environ-ment? Please tell us the top three things that make you feel most welcome at church. 1. ________________________________________

Invite your whole family to give input—kids, teens, adults, grandparents too! You can e-mail the Good News Team via Kristin Lessard (kristin@goodshepherd reno.org.) We are also working on new letterhead, new brochures for guests, and an Open House to invite people to Good Shepherd when we move into our new worship space, and to thank the people who have done such hard work to make that space a reality. Please let us know if you would like to be a part of that event via Pr. Rebecca (prrebecca@goodshepherd reno.org). We look forward to hearing from you!
