WHITMAN-HANSONPROM 2007

2 Thursday, May 31, 2007Whitman-Hanson Prom Issue

As spring turns to summer, and the school year ends, limosrolling down the street can be as common as sparrows. That’sright, it’s prom season.

Proms are extremely important in our community, important to students, their parents, and businesses alike. Here at the Express, we are annuallyflattered that so many kids and parents send us photos. So many photos, infact, that in years past we haven’t been able to print them all!

So this year, we decided to try something a little different. Consider thisspecial section a keepsake, something to treasure along with your othermemories of high school like sports trophies and yearbooks.

In the spirit of the prom, we asked our staff to dig up photos from theirhigh school proms (see right.) Somethings have changed, and some thingshaven’t. I can assure you that my dancing skills in particular are at theexact same level they were when I was 17.

Prom is often the last great fling for a high school student before theymove on to college or anotherphase of their lives. It’s a time tocelebrate with friends that maysoon be separated by distanceand time. And therefore it’s thatmuch more important to savorthese memories and photos. Andwho knows what can happen.See that beautiful girl I’m stand-ing with in my prom photo? That’s now my wife, Kelly. (Andshe looks exactly the same. Timehas not been so kind to me, onthe other hand.)

Enjoy the photos, and visitwww.southshorexpress.com toview even more.

EXPRESS REPORTER

It’s that time of the yearagain, when limos areseen pulling in and out

of local driveways, whenyoung couples are seen takingpictures in the front lawnwearing tuxedos and dresses, and flowers are exchanged inall directions.

Yes, it’s the prom seasonand besides bringing joy tomany youths, prom bringsmuch business to the town. InWhitman, one business tocome out strong was JohnRussell Studio, a styling salonwhere students can get most oftheir work done. On Friday, prom night, students crowdedthe place arriving in waves atone in the afternoon and laterat three.

“It’s very exciting to comeand get everything done here,”said student Jessica Lavigne.

Other businesses also wit-nessed big business andobserved new trends from stu-dents.

“The business itself isabout the same as otheryears,” said Jackie Fergusonof Buds and Blossoms. “There

is an increase in wrist cor-sages, though, and girls areusing a lot of color in theirdresses.”

Kathleen Roche, whoowns Celebrations byKathleen, said her businessthis year was “exceptional.”

“I don’t know quite whatto attribute it to. I also sawthat students are using differ-ent kinds of flowers this year, like orchids,” she said.

Christine King fromHanson Florist said that manybright colors, especially blues,

were in this year. She said“melon colors” like limegreen have become popularover the last couple of years.

Other companies that hadpreviously used the prom forbusiness found that they couldnot do so this year.

East BridgewaterAffordable Limo, for instance, did not offer prom services forthe first time this year, theowner stating that since thenumber of students per limou-

sines was increasing, thelimos were no longer largeenough to accommodate promgoers.

All day Friday, teenagerscould be seen hurrying aroundthe streets of Hanson andWhitman for the biggest nightof their high school career. Tomany, the prom is their specialstepping stone before enteringthe post-high school world.

& EMILY ROACHE, W-H STUDENTS

This year Whitman-Hanson did a very nicejob of “cleaning up” for prom. The girlslooked fabulous and the boys stunning!

As one entered the prom, an array of colorsemerged –– it seemed as though every color wasworn by both boys and girls. Pastels, bright neonsand neutrals were scattered in a mass of excitedprom-goers. While yellow dominated the colorscheme, the versatility of the color blue overpow-ered the room. Dark blue, royal blue, teal, turquoise, powder blue and every other shade imaginable wererepresented.

Dresses were traditional of proms; mostly A-lineor princess type strapless dresses. Many girls haddresses that tied up the back to chic and subtlysophisticated. A few girls optedfor a less traditional style, look-ing stunning and creating vari-ety. Bare-backs, open-ribbedand knee-length dresses couldbe seen.

Many dresses were beadedwith rhinestones, sequins orglass beads; they were intricatelydetailed and absolutely stunning. The girls of 2007 were jaw-drop-ping and breathtak-ing.

A new style thisyear is the suitablynamed “CupcakeDress” where thesides are pinned up tocreate a ruffledeffect; a more elegantapproach to 80s stylefashion. These dress-es are new and differ-ent in style and aresure to be popular inupcoming prom sea-sons. Dresses weremost commonly pur-chased at Irene’s inAbington, PartyDress Express inFall River orMacy’s in

Braintree or Burlington. What compliments a girls dress and makes her

look absolutely stunning? Her date and what hewears, of course! The boys did an excellent job mak-ing their dates look incredible. For the most part, boys sported black tuxes with a white or black shirt, black vest and a colored tie. Nevertheless, therewere a few knockout white tuxedos with coloredvests and ties which are rapidly growing in popular-ity. Only one brave heart sported a feathered top hatand a cane! Most of the tuxedos were rented byTuxedo’s By Merian in Brockton; they generouslydonated $5 back to the class of 2008 with each tuxe-do rental.

I have to say Whitman-Hansonlooked excellent thisyear. Keep it upWhitman-HansonClass of 2008,

and we’ll seeyou nextyear!

It is generally accepted that guys have a much easier time getting ready forformal events than girls do. With a never-ending to-do list of hair, make-up,nails, dresses, tuxes, shoes, pictures and flowers, junior Keryn Cordo and sen-ior Zack Beaton took the time to log their actions leading up to the juniorprom, knowing they would be doing it again two weeks later for the seniorprom! Here’s what they did…

With the exception of theAdvanced Placement exam on theday of the prom, Zack and Kerynrepeated an almost identical processtwo weeks later at Zack’s seniorprom, which took place atLombardo’s in Randolph. Luckily, her hair was done on time and nodress straps snapped off!
