Mission Moments

The Lee County Jail ministry, that CBC is involved in, needs more volunteer staff for the juvenile jail as well as the adult jail. This is an opportunity to serve others who are often desperate to be told the truth and to be cared for by the Body of Christ. Training is offered and mandatory. Volunteers will be mentored by other volunteers before you are expected to teach. We work as a team. If you think you might be interested in finding out more, con-tact Al Pleasants, Missy Lunceford, or the church office.

World Changers seeks to provide Christian youth and adults with oppor-tunities to meet the physical and spir-itual needs of others through practical learning experiences that teach serv-anthood and personal commitment to missions.

A group will be in TupeloJuly 21-24 (Tuesday - Friday)

Volunteers are needed to assist in providing lunch for them each day. Please contact the church office if you can help.

As we find ourselves creeping in to the month of July, before we know it, we’ll be think-ing about Fall and all it brings. It’s a crazy thing we do – always looking ahead to what’s coming up. I found myself living that life as a youth minister – fall retreat in November, Disciple Now in February, spring break mission trip in March, summer camp and sum-mer mission trip…then it started all over again.

I’ve come to believe that we can fall into a trap where we only think about what’s to come. Now don’t get me wrong – planning is a great and needed thing, but the danger is that we cease to live in the here and now and only find ourselves immersed in the planning of what’s to come. I have to remind myself all the time of the words of Moses in Psalm 90 who wrote, “Teach us to number our days carefully...” Earlier he had writ-ten, “they pass quickly…” and that is so true. Well, what do we do, then? We MUST plan for things coming up. I know in church life (or any walk of life) it’s vitally important. But maybe, instead of letting it control our lives, we simply live in the here and now, enjoying God and the day He has given us. Would you remind me, too? Let’s all take Jesus’ words to heart – “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Embrace the day! Jim

Volunteers are needed monthly to provide finger food and water for the English as a Second Language Class. There are 35 to 40 students in the class. If you can help, contact the church office or Eva Diaz at:

The Pursuit of Holiness “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’” (I Peter 1:15-16)I was spending a little time this morning in 1 Peter when I came to Peter’s exhortation to the believers regarding holiness. “Yeah right!!!” I’ve been guilty of thinking that so many times before. But not today, because as sinful as I am, and while that may be an understandable reaction consider-ing our bent toward unholiness, simply brushing it off is not an option! Holy living is something I cannot expect to just happen in my life. Surely, I don’t have to convince you (or myself) of that. The pursuit of holiness requires discipline, and lots of it! Look at the preceding verses in 1 Peter 1:13-14: “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” Did you hear those verbs? They call for action on our part: Prepare your minds. Romans 12:2 says, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” What goes in does have a direct correlation with our actions. Guard your mind fiercely. The Word, the Word, the Word! Fill your mind with it! Be self-controlled. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) The only way my life can bear these fruits is to walk by the Spirit. Until I reach Heaven, I can count on the constant fight between my flesh and the Spirit. Surrender is always the right path. Set your hope fully on Christ. As we reflect on the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders in Matthew 7:24-27 and the hymn “The Solid Rock” inspired from that passage, we remember Jesus must be our firm foundation. “My hope is built on noth-ing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” No one else! Nothing else! You see, the pursuit of holiness requires me to take personal responsibility for seek-ing after it in my life. But before I can even make a stab in that direction I have to first believe that I need to be holy. Oswald Chambers puts it this way in My Utmost for His Highest:

Do I believe I need to be holy? Do I believe God can come into me and make me holy? If by your preaching you convince me that I am unholy, I resent your preaching. The preaching of the gospel awakens an intense resentment because it must reveal that I am unholy; but it also awakens an intense craving. God has one destined end for mankind, viz., holiness. His one aim is the production of saints. God is not an eternal blessing-machine for men; He did not come to save men out of pity: He came to save men because He had created them to be holy. The Atonement means that God can put me back into perfect union with Him-self, without a shadow between, through the Death of Jesus Christ.

In our pursuit to live for Christ, we will fail, we will fall. But when we do, we must not fall prey to Satan’s lie as he sneers at us, “Give up! You’ve failed again like we all knew you would!” Yep, I’ve bought that lie plenty of times, and more than likely, you have too. Let’s not fall for that one again! Instead, let’s resolutely refute that lie by acknowledging that while it is true there is no righteousness in us apart from Jesus, we do desire to be more and more like Him each day. Let’s recall that the very purpose of our lives and destination is not our happiness, or health, or wealth, but holiness. And when we fall, let’s quickly resume the pursuit of holiness as we run back into the arms of a Father who welcomes us and showers us with grace and forgiveness. (1 John 1:9). “He who called you is holy, so be holy…” Doug
