Angels. They’re not just for Christmas any- more. Whence Comes This Rush Of Wings? Now, those who can actually lay claim to having seen an angel live and in person are few and far between, (and the word “Saint” usually precedes their names). But over the centuries, theologians and layfolk alike have continued to tussle with the concept of unseen heavenly beings. Who are they? What are they? How many are there? What do they do? What do they look like? The deductions, right or wrong, (and who on earth really knows for sure?), have resulted in a litany of popular angelic lore: Who Are They? The Greek word “angelos” (“messen- ger”) is the basis for our modern term “angels”. Since a primary Scriptural function for angels is to serve as heavenly mes- sengers, the title is an apt one. What Are They? Angels are com- monly accepted by believers as immortal spirits. Depending on your reli- gious point of view, they were either brought into being by God on one of the Days of Creation, or created eons before. How Many Are There? One monk of the Middle Ages answered this query with a witty “enough”. Others have given the matter more thought, (although with equally unverifiable results). Albert the Great, for instance, did some arcane calculations, and came up with an angelic total of “four bil- lion”. Since Biblical schol- ars often toss around the term “myriads” when it comes to counting angels, Albert was prob- ably in the ballpark. (But then, so was that monk.) As for the answer to that strangest of age-old questions, “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”, Saint Thomas Aquinas postulated that “only one angel can occupy one place at one time”. This would seem to indicate just one danc- ing angel per pinhead. However, since no one knows the size of an angel...or how many “places” exist on a pin head...the solution to the riddle remains just as elu- sive (and headache-induc- ing) as ever. What Do They Do? In addition to their roles as messengers (“The angel of the Lord appeared. . .”; “The angel of the Lord said. . .”), angels pretty much take on what- ever duties are assigned them by their heavenly Boss. Those tasks can range from leading the Israelites through the desert, to saving Daniel from the lion’s den, to rescuing Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace. According to widespread religious belief, angels are also kept busy watching over the rest of us, with each individual assigned a guardian angel. (Some folks are on a first- name basis with theirs. Saint Gemma Galgani, for instance, said her guardian angel paid daily vis- its, and stayed for lengthy chats.) For most religions, however, the primary function of angels is to give praise to their Creator. (In other words, that “multitude of the heavenly host” doesn’t just report for duty on Christmas Eve.) What Do They Look Like? Unless you’re St. Gemma, or one of her vision- ary cohorts, the “look” of an angel is fluid, limited only by the boundaries of imagina- tion. Angels presumably made their speedy jour- neys from the skies, so early artists depicted them with wings. Halos graced the heads of both angels and saints, an artistic shorthand for holiness. And those full- length, flowing angelic robes favored by Renaissance artists were really just ethereal adaptations of the garments drap- ing their more down-to-earth reli- gious subjects. comfy. When we go to themovies, and see edgyangels like off-the-wallJohn Travolta inMichael, or broodingNicholas Cage in City ofAngels, we ask, grumpi-ly, “what have they gotto be so unhappy about? After all, they’reangels.”

Mid-century angelfigurines, on the otherhand, couldn’t be happi-er. Whether glass orceramic, whether wil-lowy seraphic or cheru-bically impish, winsomesmiles and gentle posesare the norm. Thedesigners of these fig-

urines knew what wouldsell...and what sold were

angels pleasurableenough to look at ona daily basis.

Nearly everydomestic giftwarefirm from the 1940swell into the 1960sincluded atleast oneangel fig-urine in itsinventory.A m o n gthose offer-ing interest-ing varia-tions:

CeramicArts Studio,M a d i s o n .CAS wasamong themost prolif-ic angel-providers .P r i n c i p a ld e s i g n e rBetty Harrington’sangels are notablenot only for the high

quality of execu-tion, (exquisitelyrendered facial featuresare a Ceramic Arts trade-mark), but also fortheir interpretivevariety. There are“ s t a n d a r d ”angels, such as the “Praise &Blessing” pair. There arewhimsical angels, such as the“Angel Trio”: one youthfulangel pores over a choirbook, another kneels inprayer, a third reaches to theheavens clasping a gold star. There are even such unusualadaptations as the “Angels inthe Clouds” candleholders. The console set’s three seatedcherubs, resting on ceramicclouds, depict the precepts“See No Evil,” “Hear NoEvil,” and “Speak No Evil”.

A stickler for accuracy,

Harrington would runher angel proto-types, (as well as

those for other reli-gious-themed ceram-ics), past the nunswhose convent was

near theStudio. If adesign metwith their

approval,it was a“go” forp r o d u c -tion.

B e t t yLou Nichols,California. Doangels have eye-lashes? Betty LouNichols’ do. Sodo practically allof the other fig-urines turned outby this designer.Although pri-m a r i l y

known for popular-izing “lady head”

v a s e s ,Nichols alsocreated anextensive line

of holiday figurals, including, naturallyenough, angels. Tooenchanting for Christmas-only display, their hand-applied, three-dimension-al black lashes make BettyLou angels instantly rec-ognizable. Well, that andthe “Betty Lou lips”. Pink, and always hand-paintedby Betty, those lips puckerup in an especially-appro-priate-for-angels Cupid’s-bow.

Howard Pierce,California. Angels in the

abstract? Ceramist HowardPierce specialized in distill-ing things down to theiressence, and his angel fig-urines were no exception. There’s nothing extraneoushere. Often faceless, or withrudimentary, almost primi-tive features, Pierce angels

are identifiable primarily byshape. We see the wings, andthe folded hands; simplededuction fills in the blanks. These are not so much “real-istic” angels, but rather theidea of angels. The concept isequally valid, and equallysatisfying.

Higgins Glass Studio,Chicago. Known primarilyfor fused glass decorative

housewares, free-formsculptures, and 1950’s-modern mobiles, angelsare among the relativelyfew figural glass piecesreleased by the HigginsStudio. No two Higginsangels are exactly alike.

Some of these fanciful con-glomerations of geometricshapes are fashioned of plainglass in bright primary col-ors; other utilize patterned

glass remnants. There areHiggins angels with goldaccents, Higgins angels with“chip” glass dotting thewings, and Higgins angelswith embedded brass feet andhalos. The childlike playful-ness of Higgins angels, (pret-ty much like that of angelsthemselves), radiates joy.

senting the elaborate Nativity scene within aChristmas tree, angels swirling upward to thecrowning star.

This unusual combination was first pre-sented to the public in 1957, with theMetropolitan’s first exhibition of Mrs.Howard’s collection. Since 1964, more thantwo hundred 18th-century Neapolitan crèchefigures have been given to the Museum byLoretta Hines Howard, and they have beendisplayed each holiday season for more than40 years. Linn Howard, Mrs. Howard’sdaughter, worked with her mother for manyyears on the annual installation. Followingher mother’s death in 1982, she has contin-ued to create new settings for the figures sheadds to the collection. Andrea Selby, LinnHoward’s daughter, follows the traditionpassed down by her mother and grandmoth-er and joins in the creation of the displayeach year.

The towering tree is adorned withcherubs and some 50 gracefully suspendedangels. The landscape at the base displaysthe figures and scenery of the NeapolitanChristmas crib.

This display mingles three basic elementsthat are traditional to 18th-century Naples:the Nativity, with adoring shepherds andtheir flocks; the procession of the three Magiand their exotically dressed retinue of Asiansand Africans; and, most distinctively, a

crowd of colorful townspeople and peasantsrepresenting lifelike characters with intrigu-ing facial expressions. The theatrical scene isenhanced by a charming assortment of ani-mals - sheep, goats, horses, a camel, and anelephant - and by background pieces that cre-ate a dramatic setting for the Nativity, includ-ing the ruins of a Roman temple, several

quaint houses, and a typical Italian fountainwith a lion’s-mask waterspout.

The popular Christmas custom of restag-ing the Nativity is traditionally credited toSaint Francis of Assisi. The employment ofman-made figures to reenact the hallowedevents reached its height of complexity andartistic excellence in 18th-century Naples, where local families, often assisted by pro-fessional stage directors, vied to outdo eachother in presenting elaborate and theatricalcrèche displays. The high artistic estimationof the genre is evidenced in works of thefinest sculptors of the period - includingGiuseppe Sammartino and his pupilsSalvatore di Franco, Giuseppe Gori, andAngelo Viva - who were called on to modelthe terracotta heads and shoulders of theextraordinary crèche figures. The Howardcollection includes numerous works attrib-uted to these as well as to other prominentartists.

The Museum’s crèche figures, works ofart unto themselves, range from six to 20inches in height. They have articulated bod-ies of tow and wire, heads and shouldersmodeled in terracotta and polychromed toperfection. The luxurious and colorful cos-tumes, many of which are original, wereoften sewn by women of the collecting fam-ilies and their ladies and enriched with jew-els, embroideries, and elaborate accessories, including precious metals in the form of gild-

ed censers, scimitars, and daggers, and silverfiligree baskets. The placement of theapproximately 50 large angels on theChristmas tree and the composition of thecrèche figures and landscape vary slightlyfrom year to year as new figures are added tothe collection.

Lighting ceremonies take place this yearon: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, andSundays at 4:30 p.m.; and Fridays andSaturdays at 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 p.m. TheMuseum will be open on two special HolidayMondays in December this year, December24 and 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Lighting ceremonies on those dates will takeplace at 4:30 p.m.

Visitors can listen to several related audiomessages as part of the Museum’s AudioGuide program.

As part of the Christmas celebration, sev-eral concerts will take place in front of thetree in the Medieval Sculpture Hall. Formore information, contact the Museum’sDepartment of Concerts and Lectures at(212) 570-3949.

A complete list of programs and activitiesto be held at both the MetropolitanMuseum’s main building and The Cloistersduring the holiday season this year - familyprograms, films, concerts, tours, holiday din-ing, shopping (in the Met’s Holiday Shop),and more - can be found on the MetropolitanMuseum’s website at www.metmuseum.org.Detail of the Neapolitan Baroque crèche. George Brown tinplate clock-work paddlewheeler “NewYork” encouraged a winningbid of $8,850 (estimate$2,000 to $3,500). “The lotopened at $1,000, and all theway to the end, there was atriangle of bidding betweenthe phone, the floor and anabsentee bidder.Eventually thephone bidderwon,” said auc-tioneer MichaelBertoia, whoshared the podi-um duties withveteran auction-eer Tim Luke.

pushed to $5,310 (estimate$2,000 to $2,500); while afoot-long yellow Kingsburypressed steel roadster withwhite rubber tires and red hubscoasted to $5,310 (estimate$800 to $1,000). Althoughmade in Germany by Fischer, the whimsical Hi-Way Henryauto may well have beeninspired by the comic strip“Katzenjammer Kids” and is a

favorite with American toycollectors. The example inBertoia’s sale, complete with

clothesline and laundry abovethe car’s roof and a doghousecomprising the front portion ofthe vehicle, made $3,540 (esti-mate $1,200 to $1,500).

A sizable contingent ofcast-iron toy buyers was inattendance, knowing someprized pieces would be cross-ing the auction block. AHubley cast-iron “TrukMixer” in near-mint condition

boasted a red and greencolor scheme on its stout,well-molded body, witha nickeled water tank justbehind the driver’s Mackcab and a revolving drumthat, in real life, wouldhave held cement. Itrumbled away on itssuper-clean white rubberwheels to the bidder whopaid $14,160 (estimate$3,500 to $4,500).

Not far behind theTruk Mixer was another

cast-iron automotive gem -Kenton’s depiction of a 1936Nash Lafayette coupe pulling

a primitive silverhouse trailer. Thetoy is the onlyexample known toexist outside theKenton ToyMuseum in Ohio.It was offered atBertoia’s with anadvertising book-let depicting thecar and trailer, titled “Travel byCovered Wagon -The CompleteSteel TrailerHome.” Estimated at $7,000 to$9,000 the roadworthy set wasready for adventure afterknocking down a hefty$11,210.

A beautiful selection offigural cast-iron doorstopsdrew collectors who bid confi-dently on the many formsknowing each had been per-sonally vetted by BertoiaAuctions’ owner, JeanneBertoia, an expert in thedoorstop field. Lot 468, a 16-

1/4-inch Bradley & Hubbard“Whistling Jim” topped thegroup at an above-estimate$7,080. Another desirabledoorstop design by Bradley &Hubbard, a Rooster with fine-ly delineated feathers andrealistic detailing to its face, comb and feet, surpassed itshigh estimate at $4,720.Among the doorstops depict-ing buildings, a quaint CapeCod Cottage with Hollyhocksdominated the upper end of

the real estate market, closingat $3,540.

The cataloged portion ofthe auction concluded with afine selection of holidayitems, including Christmasbelsnickles, Dresden, glassand pressed-cotton orna-ments; and a number of earlyHalloween candy containersand other novelties. A magnif-icent 16-inch-high GermanSanta on reindeer candy con-tainer was a highlight, sellingfor $5,900.

The selection was fol-lowed by an uncatalogedoffering of holiday surpriseboxes, which kept many bid-ders - including members ofThe Golden Glow ofChristmas Past collector club -firmly in their seats till thevery end.
