Designers Fair1-3 February 2016, Chennai, India

Introduction – Design – a Key Element in global tradeThe US Designer Brian Reed Said Everything is de-

signed. Few things are designed well while Alina Wheel-er, the author of Designing Brand Identity: an essential guide for the whole branding team right from CEOs to marking team said Design is intelligence made visible. Another Designer Daniel Mall said Technology over tech-nique produces emotionless design. All these sayings emphasize the underlying factor that the basic elements of design are creativity and innovation.

Having defined creativity and innovation as the ele-ments of design, the next question is whether these alone can ensure the success or mass acceptance of the Design? The answer will be a big No. The famous poet John Keats said A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never Pass into nothing-

ness. Of course, we all adore beauty but beauty can bring in hazards too. Then, can we say that design can bring in success only when something different is cre-ated? Here again, we need a quote. The American jour-nalist Suzanne Gordon said To be alone is to be dif-ferent, to be different is to be alone. This brings in an apprehension that by being different you may end-up in no man’s land.

Then how can a Design be successful? A Design cannot be successful unless it is appealing to a wide section of people or in business terms a market. This again brings us to the basic psychology of reading the human mind or in business terms the mind of the market. Designers who read the mind of the market often end-up with setting trends rather than creating designs according to the trends. This is how Italians

have been successful year after year in setting trends for the market.

Patrick W. Jordan is a design, marketing and brand strategist. He consults for many of the world’s most successful companies and is considered to be one of the most influential practitioners in his field. He has talked about an interesting concept called Inclusive Design. He states that Inclusive design is not a new genre of design, nor a separate specialism, but an ap-proach to design in general and an element of busi-ness strategy that seeks to ensure that mainstream products, services and environments are accessible to the largest number of people. He further defines three elements of Inclusive Design namely Desirability, Us-ability and Functionality. He concludes by saying that Inclusive Design is all about a) Taking a user-centered approach b) Balancing the practical and the emotional, or the functional and the humanistic issues and c) Con-necting with the user – you can’t “sell” something to someone who ain’t interested.

Thus, the Indian Leather Industry cannot set the trends in design unless we have a comprehensive knowledge of the tastes and lifestyle of the western world, to whom we are primarily exporting. Of course, we have achieved considerable success in setting the colour trends by regularly winning the colour selec-tions at the Modeurop Congress. But in terms of val-ue added products, we have a long way to go. In this context, the initiative of the Government of India to have tie-ups with Italian Designers and Policy makers is welcome. Whether it is Design institutions like ARS SUTORIA School or Modapelle or freelance technicians and designers, their services are extensively used by the leather industry and we can learn a lot from our enhanced co-operation with them.

The concepts envisaged in National Design Policy of the Government of India namely “Designed in India – Made for the World”, creating Design Hubs/Institutions, India Design Mark etc,. can be converted into reality through the combined efforts of industry, institutions and designers.

Designers Fair – BackgroundIn the presentation made by Commerce Secretary

to Hon’ble Prime Minister of India in the Make in India workshop held in New Delhi on Dec. 29, 2014, the fol-lowing point was also mentioned in the Action Plan.

Long term agreement with foreign designers to create new designs for new markets and train local designers

Accordingly, the Council for Leather Exports set-up a Task Force on Design under the Chairmanship of Shri Naresh Bhasin, Regional Chairman (West), CLE to ex-plore areas of Design Development. The Task Force held detailed deliberations in its meetings held in Mumbai during April 16, 2015 and July 25, 2015 and came-up with the action plan of organizing the Designers Fair in Chennai during Feb. 1-3, 2016. The following is the con-cept of the fair.

• Overseas designers can present their design collec-tions/projects in a fully decorated stand wherein the Designed Products as well as Design Projects of the Designer will be exhibited.

• The Indian manufacturers will be able to see the de-sign collection and hold business consultations with the Designers in their respective stands for future co-operation, including buying of Design Projects from them.

As organizing the Designers Fair was a new concept and mobilizing overseas designers was a challenging take, an extensive Designer Outreach programme was carried out.

Wide Publicity was given to the Designers Fair through organisation of Designers Meet in Milan during Sept. 2015. Presentations on Designers Fair were also or-ganised in Las Vegas, USA, Aug. 2015 and New York, December 2015. Design Directors were engaged for Europe and USA. A detailed strategy was worked out in several meetings of Task Force on Design. Besides, the Council for Leather Exports contacted several trade as-sociations in overseas countries requesting participation of designers associated with them, besides sending cir-culars to members.

Designers Fair – the eventThe Designers Fair was held in Hotel Le Royal Meri-

dien, Chennai during Feb. 1-3, 2016. This is the first ini-tiative undertaken by Council for Leather Exports under Make in India programme, aimed at design development in Indian leather industry. This is the first such exclusive Design Exhibition for the Leather Industry held in India and perhaps one of first Design Specific Exhibition for leather industry held in the world.

The initiatives for organising the Designers Fair were taken as per the advice of Shri M. Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports by a Task Force on Design headed by Shri Naresh Bhasin, Regional Chair-man (West), Council for Leather Exports.

As planned, the Designers Fair was held in Hotel Le Royal Meridien during Feb. 1-3, 2016. The following are the highlights of the fair.
