Question:
Many vacation travelers to the islands of Hawaii often ask questions about preparation and planning. How should one prepare for a Hawaii vacation? What should be considered while planning a trip to Hawaii? What are the special arrangements that one should make for their Hawaii trip? Others ask questions about the places that they should visit while on vacation and about the temperature and weather conditions of their Hawaiian destinations.

Below, we will address these questions and provide helpful information and tips to help make your Hawaii trip planning fun and easy. We will then sum this all up and add it to a helpful travel checklist that you will be able to update and track throughout all the stages of planning your Hawaii vacation.

Planning a Trip to Hawaii
We will first give a helpful tip and address one aspect of traveling that is often overlooked, but that can be very beneficial to any traveler. If you travel at least once per year with a particular airline you may have been enrolled in a frequent flier mileage program. Some airlines partner with each other and therefore share airline mileage points and awards. If you are enrolled in such a program, consider redeeming the mileage points for use towards your flights to Hawaii or towards your Hawaii hotel accommodations. This may prove to significantly reduce the cost associated with your Hawaii vacation. If you are not currently enrolled in a frequent flier mileage program then you should consider enrolling in one prior to booking your flight and accommodations to Hawaii. The reason for this is quite simple, a trip to Hawaii can be anywhere from six to fourteen hours long, depending on your departure location. It is therefore an easy way to add up mileage points quickly to use or savings on future travel plans.

Below are a few other recommended plans and preparations:

  • Do your research and book your flight, car rental and hotel accommodations to the Hawaiian island(s) that you wish to visit. Read the How to find flight to Hawaii article for a few basic tips on how to find cheap flights to Hawaii.
  • Some airlines will serve a meal during flight, inquire about this upfront and request any special dietary needs if available while booking your flight. Otherwise, make special arrangements to address any such dietary needs.
  • If you will be renting a car in Hawaii while on your vacation, this is a good time to check your auto insurance policy to ensure that you will have coverage on a rental car out of state.
  • If you will not be renting a car, arrange for transportation to and from your hotel and the airport. Some hotels may provide a complementary shuttle service to and from the airport; others may charge an additional fee for this service.
  • If you will be depending on public transportation to activities and locations outside of walking distance of your hotel, start researching and taking note of the transportation systems and of bus schedules. You may also want to consider looking into booking tour operators and tour services to these locations where available.
  • Unfortunately, accidents do happen on vacations too. Be prepared in advance and double check your medical insurance policy to ensure out-of-town coverage if the need arises.
  • This is also a good time to decide whether or not to purchase travel insurance. If the decision is to purchase, go ahead and arrange for and execute the purchase.
  • It is recommended that all travelers travel with at least two forms of identification. At least one form of ID should contain a photo. Check to ensure that your passport, state issued ID and/or driver’s license are in good order and will not expire while on your vacation. Keep in mind that Hawaii is a US state and therefore a passport is not required for interstate travel. International travelers should however have a valid passport and any other required documentation.

Now that you have your flight, and hotel accommodations satisfied, it is official – YOU ARE GOING TO HAWAII! Now, let the real Hawaii trip planning begin.
