and AIDS in Agriculture Strategies for mainstreaming
Objectives
Slide 3
ZEST The great majority of the population in the countries
mostly affected by HIV/AIDS live in rural areas. In many African
countries, farming and other rural occupation provide a livelihood
for more than 70% of the population. Hence it is expected that the
HIV?. AIDS epidemic will cause serious damage to the agric sector
in those countries. This presentation explores the issue related to
the impact of HIV/AIDS on Agriculture. Introduction
Slide 4
ZEST Conceptual framework for the impact of HIV AND AIDS
Slide 5
ZEST Caused by HIV related illnesses and the loss of labour
from aids related deaths may lead to the reduction of the area of
land under cultivation and to declining yields resulting in reduced
food production and food insecurity. Absenteeism
Slide 6
ZEST Caring of the sick or attending funeral will reduce labour
and lead to absenteeism in gardening. Family members time diverted
to care giving
Slide 7
ZEST There is loss of traditional farming methods and loss of
assets will occur as members of rural households are struck by the
disease and are not able to pass on their know how to subsequent
generation. Loss of farming knowledge
Slide 8
ZEST May lead to declines in crop variety and to changes in in
cropping systems, particularly a change from more labour intensive
systems to less intensive systems. A shift from labour intensive
crops may result in a less varied and less nutritious diet. Loss of
labour
Slide 9
ZEST This is through the loss of workers to HIV /AIDS at
crucial periods of planting and harvesting could significantly
reduce the size of harvest affecting food production. Crops
affected by pests and diseases due to poor management. Reduction in
labour supply
Slide 10
ZEST this is due to deaths and illnesses or discharge on
medical grounds. Loss of extension workers
Slide 11
ZEST Mainstreaming is a process that enables organization to
address the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS in an effective and
sustained manner, both through their usual work and within their
workplace MAINSTREAMING HIV AND AIDS
Slide 12
ZEST It can be defined as a process of analysing how HIV/AIDS
impacts on all sectors now and in the future, both internally and
externally to determine how each sector should respond based on its
comparative advantage. Defination
Slide 13
ZEST The use of research The use of HIV/AIDS focal persons, The
use of training Building structures for enabling high level
support. STRATEGIES FOR MAINSTREAMING
