    BUSTERS STILL AT LARGE

I BY JAMES ALEXANDREA POLICE officer risked deepsnowdrifts and a steep ice-coveredhill to reach a child in Dungenesswho was struggling to breathe.

PC Ian Clark, normally based at Folkestonepolice station but working out of Lydd becauseof the weather, was first on the scene onThursday last week during the worst of thesnowfall after getting the call at about 2.40pm.

He was able to treat the 13-month-old infantuntil an ambulance arrived, when the childwas taken to hospital and is now safe and well.

PC Clark, who is also a volunteer communityresponder for Romney Marsh with the SouthEast Coast Ambulance Service (SECAMB),told Yourshepway:

Im the team leader for our area, so knowingwhat the Marsh is like for ambulance coverand the bad weather, I asked my managementif I could book some time with the ambulancewhile on duty with the police.

Then we got this call to Dungeness theweather was pretty bad when we drove downand we had to walk over the hill to where thehouse was. It was just too bad to drive up andover in a normal car.

PC Clark says as volunteers they are trainedin basic life support, including how to operatea defibrillator and give oxygen and first aid.

He said: The 13-month-old was on the setteeand breathing very fast, almost like a dogpanting. We tried to provide some oxygentherapy for the infant until the ambulancecrew arrived and just basically keep mum andpatient calm and did what we could.
