ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם ואחרי עיניכם

“Then you shall not stray after your hearts and eyes”

Bamidbar 15:39

Our sages explain the phrase אחרי לבבכם (after your hearts)

to refer to heresy. We generally would associate the heart

with lust and desire. Heresy on the other hand is the product of a thinking process and its source is the brain.

Why does the Torah equate heresy with the heart? The

answer is associating faith with inelegance is a fallacy. The Torah expects a thirteen year old boy to believe in the

basic principles of our faith, concepts that great

philosophers of the past did not accept or believe in. If these concepts are beyond the understanding of mature

adults, how can a young Bar Mitzvah boy be expected to

believe and follow these precepts. The truth is that the fundamentals of Emunah are easy to comprehend, simple

logic dictates that just as a house was constructed by a

builder, and a garment was put together by a tailor, the world was created by a creator. A young boy is capable of

understanding this, but people stumble because they are

seduced by the desires of their heart, and their lust for

pleasure blinds them in concocting specious philosophies to justify their perverted and promiscuous way of life. Therefore the Torah is correct in saying that the heart is the seat of

heresy.

Q. May one take a pot of chulent out of the oven on Friday night, dish some out, and then put the pot

back in the oven?

A. In order to return a completely cooked still warm dish to the oven on Shabbos, the fire in the oven must have a special covering for Shabbos (like a blech) there are 2 reasons for this:

That Rabbis were concerned that one may not notice that the fire is too low and mistakenly

forget and adjust the temperature.

The Rabbis were concerned that putting food back on a heat source appears as if one is cooking

it.

In the opinion of most halachic authorities it is forbidden to return the food back to the oven if it’s not covered even though in some ovens no fire is visible, still there is nothing that distinguishes the oven

from its regular weekday appearance. It still looks like someone is cooking and also the chance of adjusting the temperature is still possible.

This rabbinical prohibition poses a problem to those who want to eat some chulent from the oven since as we just explained you would not be able to put the chulent pot back inside. You also cannot dish

chulent out of the pot while it is still inside the oven, since it is a Rabbinic prohibition to dish out food while it is still on the fire even if the food is completely cooked. However there is a minority opinion

that if the stove knobs are covered or removed, the chulent may be returned to the oven.

Q. What is the status of a Parve blender in which onions that were cut with a clean meat

knife were blended – does the blender become fleishig or does it remain Parve?

A. It is an argument among the halachic authorities. The consensus is to follow the more

lenient opinion that the blender remains Parve. (But certainly one should try to avoid

placing such onions in a Parve blender in the first place).
