PROPP - John Henry Propp was born on February 12, 1921 in Rhein, SK. He was the third child born to Alexander and Annie (nee Holstein) Propp. John attended school in Rhein and later in Yorkton when his family moved there in the 1930’s. His father established Propp’s Foodateria at that time. John delivered groceries with his bicycle and later went on to have a variety of jobs including driving taxi. When the Second World War broke out in Europe, John decided to serve his country and fight to protect freedom. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Lake Superior Regiment Reconnaissance Platoon Fourth Canadian Armour Division) in Prince Albert, SK in 1942. He then went for basic training in Vernon, BC then continued his training in eastern Canada as a wireless operator where he excelled in understanding and using Morse Code. John went overseas and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After the
war was officially over, he served in the army of occupation in Germany. He received his honourable discharge in 1946 and came back to Yorkton to join the Propp family business. On November 11 that same year, John was in Regina and met the love of his life, the beautiful Ethel Graves. After a brief courtship, there was a Christmas Eve proposal and a wedding was held on May 14, 1947. After the wedding, John and Ethel began their lives together in Yorkton. They were blessed with their first child Richard in 1948, followed by Randall in 1951, Debra in 1954, Judith in 1960, Alan (Jim) in 1961 and Timothy in 1967. Throughout that time, John worked at Propp’s until the mid 1950’s when his family started Midwest Packers which today is known as Harvest Meats. In 1970, John decided to go back where it all began and took control of Propp’s Foodateria on Betts Avenue, a business that he ran with Ethel until 1990 when they retired. Retirement years were spent spoiling grandchildren, spending more time with Ethel, socializing on coffee row, gardening, keeping in touch with everyone through his computer and even having a Facebook account. John always had a keen interest in technology. In the mid 1960’s he got his diploma for Radio and Television Servicing from the National Radio Institute based in Washington, DC. John was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion and also a Life Member of the Lions’ Club where he served as President for one term. He was also a dedicated member of his church and often shared his deep love of music by playing trumpet and singing in the choir. John watched the news and read the newspapers regularly. He gave news and current affairs his full attention and at times, it must be said, his very candid opinions. On Tuesday, September 1, John peacefully left his home on earth and passed into the arms of his beloved Jesus. John leaves to celebrate his life, his loving wife Ethel, children: Rick (Barbara) of Calgary, Randy of Yorkton, Deb (Bob) Thompson of Yorkton, Judy Phillips of Calgary, Jim (Susan) from Saskatoon and Tim (Cher) of Calgary. His grandchildren: Jeff (Dana), Jenna (Sam), Jillian (Matt), Christiaan, Shannon (Kelly), Crystal (Jody), James (Caitlin), Amanda (Ryan), Daniel (Angela), Bethany, Kaetlyn, Dirk (Keli) and Madison. Great-grandchildren; Benjamin, Aria, Nathan, Isaac, Taye, Olivia, Carter, Mekhi, Hayden, Reed, Garnett, Ciara. John’s brothers: David (Shirley), Arnold (Joanne), sister Hilda and sisters-in-law Ferne & Ella, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends. John was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Annie, his brothers Ed, Fred, Ron, Rudy and by sisters Dorothy and Ruth. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 7, 2015 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Richard Gibson & Rev. Devon Pattemore officiating. Reflections & remembrances were offered by John’s family. Organist, Ruth McPhee led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘The Old Rugged Cross’, ‘Amazing Grace’, and ‘There’s Room at the Cross’. The recessional hymn was ‘Go Now in Peace’. John’s daughter Debra sang ‘Suppertime’. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Gen. Alexander Ross Branch #77, Yorkton formed the colour guard and gave the Legion Tribute Service. The interment took place in the Garden of Devotion with sons Jim and Tim serving as the urn bearers. Memorials in John’s name can be made to the Knox Presbyterian Memorial Fund or to one’s charity of choice.
NELSON - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Hector Martin Nelson, age 83, at the Regina General Hospital on Thursday, September 3, 2015 with his wife and family continually at his side. Hector was born on August 28, 1932 to Oscar and Minnie (nee Sjoberg) Nelson in Elfros, SK. Hector grew up and completed his high school education in Elfros, SK, followed by Teachers’ College in Saskatoon. Once teaching, he completed his Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science Degrees at the University of Saskatchewan. Part way through his teaching career, Hector entered the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a navigator, which allowed him to travel to many parts of the world. Among his favourites were visits to Scotland, Ireland, England, Denmark, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Bermuda, among many others. After 5 years, on a short service commission, he returned to teaching in
Saskatchewan. It was then that he met his future wife, Joyce Brodziak. They were married on May 18, 1968. While posted in Winnipeg, he was an air navigation instructor for the Royal Canadian Air Force. His first daughter, Darcie, was born here. He was later transferred to Greenwood, NS, where his son, Todd, was born. Shortly after, Hector decided to return to teaching in Saskatchewan so he could be home with his growing family. Hector and Joyce then welcomed their third child, Crystal, to the family. Hector retired from teaching, but in true teacher fashion, he never retired from working. He started up his own income tax business and taught adult education courses through the Yorkton Tribal Council. The Nelson family farm brought great pride to Hector as it has been in the Nelson name for over 100 years. Over the 40+ years that he owned the land, Hector enjoyed farming it himself and later visiting to check the crops. Hector was an avid Bridge player, bowler and reader. At any given time, you might find him calculating Bridge scores or reading the latest Sci-Fi novel. His greatest joy came with the arrival of his four grandchildren, Karson, Keenan, Claire and Addison. He enjoyed playing tile rummy, dominoes and computer games with them and was the proudest grandpa at the hockey and baseball games, Ukrainian dance performances and gymnastics competitions. He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory, his loving wife, Joyce of 47 years, his three children, Darcie (Ward) Krasowski of Yorkton with grandsons, Karson and Keenan, Todd Nelson of Edmonton, AB and Crystal (Thad) Swidzinski of Yorkton with granddaughters, Claire and Addison; brothers, John (Marjy) Nelson of Cold Lake, AB, Kim (Lynn) Nelson of Yorkton, Dale (Gloria) Nelson of Elfros and sister, June Peterson of Elfros; mother-in-law, Helen Brodziak of Kamsack; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene (Sylvia) Brodziak of Kenosee, Gladys Brodziak of Bethune, Garry (Gladys) Brodziak of Pinawa, MB, Gail (Ivan) Peterson of Sturgis, Terry (Shelly) Brodziak of Swift Current, Randy (Veronica) Brodziak of Calgary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Hector was predeceased by his parents, Minnie and Oscar; sister, Margaret; brother, Glen; brother-in-law, Ashley; nephew, Sam; father-in-law, Mike; brother-in-law, Ed. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. and Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. concelebrating. The responses to the Liturgy were led by Laurie Fedorowich. The cross bearer was Karson Krasowski and the epistle reader was Todd Nelson. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, General Alexander Branch conducted the Tribute Service and served in an Honour Guard for their comrade. Serving as urn bearers were Keenan Krasowski, Claire Swidzinski and Addison Swidzinski assisted by Grandma. He was born during harvest, the eldest son of the eldest son, Leslie had four siblings, Ronald, Jean, Kenneth and Gerry. Leslie attended Orkney School and received Journeyman’s status in machine repair, animal husbandry and agriculture from the College of Experience and Necessity. Leslie could fix any machine or appliance known to mankind. He loved his Hereford cattle, religiously checking cows at all hours during calving season assisting the new babies into the world if necessary. His horses were his passion. His team had his determination and were known to go through trails where others would not go and pull loads others were unable to budge. On June 30, 1951 he married the love of his life, Joyce McKen. seen today. Their romance extended through three years of courtship and sixty-four years of marriage. During his brief stay at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre they always held each other’s hand, Joyce never leaving the room without kissing the top of his forehead. The couple had three children, Bonnie-Jean, Carol and Grant. Active in his community, Leslie for over thirty years was a contributing member of the Yorkton Agricultural Society serving as a Director, then as President, being honoured with Lifetime membership and given the title as Senator. He took his obligation to community very seriously as well, serving on the local school board and both the Westview and Orkney United Church boards. He always extended his help to a neighbour when help was needed, whether it be a barn raising after a fire or helping harvest a neighbour’s crop when circumstance dictated. Leslie was twenty-eight days from reaching his 89th birthday having no health issues until reaching his 80’s. He went to sleep peacefully with his beloved Joyce, his children and grandchildren and close friends by his side on Wednesday, September 2, 2015. However, many of the dollars spent leak out of our
economy to USCorporations. A 2013 report
produced for Vancity reported that two out of
every three dollars spentonline by Canadians go to
US retail websites.
Please help us complete our research toasses the impact of thesetrends on local business.
If you own a retail business or are a
consumer (and we all are),please take our survey at:
locobc.com/2015/04/23/online_shopping_impact/
The survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes
and closes October 15th, 2015

D I S T I N C T I V E MULTI-GABLED ROOF-LINE
This charming two-storey, four-bedroom home with its multi-gabled roof-line features a distinctive cut-stone archway that marks the front entrance. The design includes an unfin-ished bonus room over the double garage, as well as an optional unfin-ished basement.
A veranda extends across the front of the home, attached to a cov-ered porch that shelters the front entry. Inside, a roomy foyer includes a coat closet. The great room is directly ahead, and includes a gas fire-place flanked by shelv-ing and a view out to the terrace overlooking the back garden.
The dining room’s french doors open onto the covered portion of the back terrace, perfect for grilling in all kinds of weather. Part of the ceiling in the great room and dining area is dou-ble-height, lending the rooms an airy aspect.
The roomy kitchen features a U-shaped counter configuration that surrounds a work island. Tucked in beside the generous pantry is a handy telephone desk. A
window over the double sink looks out to the back garden.
To the immediate right of the foyer is the U-shaped stairway to the second floor. Nearby is a den, along with the laun-dry room and a two-piece powder room.
To the left of the foyer, the master suite occu-pies a bayed-out area. French doors from the bedroom offer access to a covered portion of the back terrace. The ensuite is reached via a large walk-in closet and includes double basins and a soaker tub, as well as a glassed-in shower stall.
All ceilings on the main floor measure nine feet high, except as noted in the great room and dining area.
Upstairs, the second and third bedrooms look out to the back garden, with the fourth bedroom looking out to the front. All the secondary bed-rooms share a bathroom with two basins, lit by a skylight.
A study area on the landing has room for a desk, and an unfinished storage area will pro-vide extra space. Near the entrance to the bonus room are cupboards for linen and cleaning tools.
Exterior finishes include horizontal siding
with board-and-batten accents in the gables, as well as decorative stone-work and painted trim.
This home measures 67 feet, six inches wide and 65 feet deep, for a total of 3,093 square feet.
Plans for design 7-4-1001 are available for $995 (set of 5), $1115(set of 8) and $1211 for a super set of 10. B.C. resi-dents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 out-side of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.
