GET SET. . . Franklin, the minister in Villa Esperanza, Punta Cana, and his wife Ilonka, the director of the school, took on theadministrative portion of the project. They spent monthspreparing for the August opening as well. They hadcountless meetings with the Dominican Ministry ofEducation; hired 6 teachers, a secretary, a custodian and acafeteria worker; placed ads of the local radio to notify thepublic of the school opening; designed a school seal;ordered uniforms for students; reviewed books and plannedcurriculum; and prayed for students.

This summer the students beganto enroll for the fall. At the end ofJuly only 20 students had registeredand we began to worry about how

earn my first belt. I amworking hard to learn

everything I need to knowfor my first exam in

November. So until nexttime "wat" or "good bye".

we would finance the project. Butwe were sure of the need of anaffordable education in VillaEsperanza since less than half of theschool aged children in the areaattend school. We prayed that Godwould provide financially so we couldmeet the need without creating aburden for the church or themission.

The kindergarten classroomawaiting students- August 2013

On August 20, we opened our doors to the first group ofchildren in the Colegio Color Esperanza (Color of HopeSchool). During the first few weeks of school the attendancecontinued to grow. We breathed a sigh of relief when weknew we had enough children to cover the teacher's salariesand the children continued to enroll. We reached ourmaximum capacity of 102 children at the beginning of thismonth! We are thrilled that God has blessed us with aschool full of children and currently the school is able to funditself with its day to day expenses!

Happy Birthday, Josiah! We celebrated my 3rd birthday atschool on Monday with my friends. Ireally wanted a Beast party, youknow like "Beauty and the Beast"but my Mom couldn't find any partystuff with just the beast. So. . . wedecided on the next best thing,Mickey Mouse. It was fun and evenmy Nani came all the way from theUnited States to celebrate with me. She made special Mickey Mousecupcakes with Oreos for ears! Theywere so yummy. Today I asked mymom when it would be my birthdayagain. I loved it so much I can't waituntil next year!

Punta Cana School The kindergarten classroom- September 2013

GO. . . to school! The school serves children ages 3 to fourth grade from8:00 am until 12:00pm, Monday through Friday. Eachstudent pays a monthly fee of 1000 pesos, less than $24, toattend the school. An afternoon meal and daycare isprovided for children that attend the school for an additional1000 pesos. From first through fourth grade they are offeredall the basics such as reading, grammar, mathematics, socialstudies and science. They also have once a weekinstruction in physical education, English, civics, arts and theBible. In preschool and in kindergarten the focus is on pre-writing, letter recognition and beginning mathematics. As expected, there are many children entering school forthe first time or transferring from schools that have beenclosed due to the inability to meet government standards. As a result approximately one-third of the children attendingthe school do not meet the standards for their age and graderequirements. We are trying to meet each child where he isby providing extra assistance within the classroom. We haveexcellent teachers that are up to the challenge as they desireto help make a difference in the lives of children and withintheir own community. We hope to soon be able to hireanother staff member to assist children with special needswhen the financial resources become available to do so.

Although we are stillworking out the details ofrunning a school with over100 students, we are veryencouraged at where we areand how far God has broughtus in the past year. ColegioColor Esperanza meansColor or Hope School. We,as Christians, have found ahope because we know aSavior that loves us. Wehave seen this hope spreadin the Villa Esperanza(Village of Hope) as Godtransformed the town throughthe church. We look forwardto seeing hope continue tospread in the lives of those inthe Color of Hope School, the church, and itssurrounding community. We thank you for all your support with prayers, finances andthe sweat and tears you have put into this project. Pleasecontinue to support this project with your prayers as Godleads us to discover and rediscover His hope in the lives of asmall Dominican community.
