Catawba RiverThe Catawba River is a 220-mile long tributary of the Wateree River. Originating in the Appalachian Mountains, the Catawba drains into the Piedmont and is impounded through a series of reservoirs for flood control and hydroelectricity. As the river flows south through the Lake Wylie reservoir, it forms an approximately 10 mile border between North and South Carolina.
The river is named after the Catawba tribe of Native Americans. They were known in their own language as the Kawahcatawbas, “the people of the river.”
Today, the waterway is a natural resource for both recreational and sporting uses and provides a scenic backdrop for fishing, hiking, paddling and camping.
LAKE WYLIE is the second oldest of the of
eleven lakes on the Catawba River Chain.
The lake has a surface area of approximately
13,443 acres with 325 miles of shoreline, and
stretches from the Mountain Island Dam
in North Carolina to the Wylie Dam on the
southern end of the lake. The average depth
of the lake is just over 20 feet. 73
