Introduction

In2016ateacherforumwasheldtodiscussandreflectuponthecurrentstudentleadershipstructureatYinnarPrimarySchool.Theoutcomeoftheforumisthematerialwithinthismanual.

ItwasdecidedatYinnarPrimarySchoolallstudentleadershiproleswillbeadvertisedandthendeterminedattheendofaschoolyearforthefollowingyear.

WehopethismanualassistsstudentsinunderstandingYinnarPrimarySchool’sstudentleadershipstructure.Wewishtheleadersofthefutureallthebestintheirendeavours.

StatementofStudentLeadershipatYinnarPrimarySchool

AtYinnarPrimarySchoolwebelievestudentsneedtobeatthecentreoftheirlearningandshouldhavetrueownershipintheirschool.Studentsaregivenopportunitiestohaveinputintodecisions,voiceconcernsandmakesuggestionstoimprovetheirschool,aswellasbecomingmoreawareofthewidercommunity.

Leadershipisintegraltolife-longlearning.Allstudentsshouldhavetheopportunitytodemonstrateanddevelopleadershipskills.StudentleadershiprolesincludeSchoolCaptains,HouseCaptains,JuniorSchoolCouncillorsandGraceTeamLeaders.

StudentswhoaimtogainastudentleadershiproleneedtoaspiretodemonstrateanunderstandingandmodelourGRACEcorevaluesineveryaspectofschoollife.

GrowthMindset LeadersatYPSdemonstrateagrowthmindset.Theyshowaloveoflearning,valueeffortandpersistinthefaceofobstacles.Leadersarebeopentochallengeandwelcomefeedback.

LeadershipAttributesIdealstudentrepresentativeshavemanywonderfulqualities–somanythatwecannotpossiblylistthemall.Theyhavebeengroupedintoskillsets,someofwhichcontainamixofskillsandotherattributes.Theyarepresentedhereinnoparticularorder–theyareallimportant!

PrivatecommunicationGoodleadersarecapableofengagingwithpeopleatanindividuallevel.TheycantalkwitheveryonefromPrepstothePrincipalinaone-on-onesituation.Theyareapproachable,personable,goodlistenersandcancommunicateeffectivelytosolveproblems.

PublicCommunicationThisisaboutcommunicatingwithawiderangeofaudiences.Idealleadersunderstandthestudentbodyasawholeandthediversitywithinit.Theyareconfidentpublicspeakerswhocanalsowritenewsletterarticlesanddesignposters.

OrganisedBeingbusypeople,goodleadersarenaturallyorganised.Theymanagetheirtimewellsoastobalancemeetingsandbehind-the-sceneswork–butstillgetothercommitmentscompleted.Theyarestrongonimplementingdecisionsandactions,andaregreatatorganisingeventsdowntothelastdetail.

PassionateIdealleadersbubblewithpassionandenthusiasm.Theirpositivespiritisinfectiousthroughouttheentirestudentbody.Theyhaveaclearsenseofpurposeaboutwhatitmeanstorepresentallstudentsandaregreatatmotivatingotherstogetonwiththejob.

CreativethinkersGoodleaderscanlookataproblemorissuefromdifferentperspectivesandmake‘outofthebox’suggestionsforaction.Theyarealsopreparedtoraiseadissentingpointofviewsothatdecisionsmadearebasedonadetaileddiscussion.

CommittedThebestleadersgothedistance.Theyfollowtheirprojectsthroughfromstarttofinish,includingwritingupanevaluationandsomehandovernotesforthenextleaders.

TeamPlayersSuccessfulleadersaregreatatworkingwithothers.Theyknowthattosucceedrequiresateameffortandnotpersonalglory.Theyshowpatienceduringdifficultdiscussionswheretherearedifferentviewpoints.Theyplayaunifyingrolethatbringsteamstoacollectivedecision.

VisionaryGreatleadersaredreamersandimaginative.Theyareambitiousaboutwhattheycanachieveandseethebiggerpicture.Theyalsoseethestepsalongthewayandcanmapoutaplanforhowtogetthere.

• AtYinnarPrimarySchoolallstudentleadershiproleswillbeadvertisedandthendeterminedattheendofaschoolyearforthefollowingyear.

• Term4willbethebeginningofthisprocess.• Studentsbegintheprocessbydecidingwhichrolestheywouldliketoapplyfor.

Theyareencouragedtoputsomethoughtintothisastheywillneedtorecordtheirpreferencesonapersonalpreferencelistiftheyarerunningformorethanoneleadershiprole.

• Studentsareencouragedtogoforanypositionstheyareinterestedinandfeelworthyof,ratherthannotgoingforonebecausetheywouldpreferanother.

• TheleadershiprolesoftheJSCandGraceteamaredeterminedbyawrittenapplication,beingshortlistedandthenhavingagroupinterviewwithapanelofbothteachersandgrade6students.

• StudentswhoholdtheSchoolandVice-Captainrolesaretheonlystudentstoholdadualroleandtheserolesareallocatedwiththepositions.SchoolCaptainsarealsoontheGRACEteamandViceCaptainswillbepartoftheJuniorSchoolCouncil.

RoleStatement:

As themost significant student leaders in the school, SchoolCaptains areexpected tobeambassadorswhoembodytheschoolvalueswhichareGrowthMindset,Respect,AimHigh,CuriosityandEnthusiasm.Theymustbeapproachable, reliableand trustworthywithhighexpectationsofthemselvesandothers.TheSchoolCaptainsaretotakeanactiveroleinallaspects of the school community and work with others to achieve the best possibleoutcomes.
