Year 4 English – Week beginning 4th May
Welcome to a brand new week year 4! This week we are
going to plan and write the habitat and diet section of
your report.
Monday - lesson 1 LO: To plan the Habitat section of our non-chronological report
In your last lesson, you wrote the appearance section of your report using your plan as a guide. Today, you are going to plan the ‘Habitat’ section of your report.
First, you will need to decide where your dragon lives! Here are some
examples of location where they could be found; try and be creative
and specific with your location!
After this, you will now need to go into more detail about the
location you have chosen. Take a look at this slide of how
you could use ideas if you have chosen inside of a volcano as
your location:
Task
Complete your habitat plan for your non-chronological report. Take a look at the
bronze silver and gold descriptions for guidance. Also, there is also a box to give
an example of what your habitat plan might look like:
Post-learning reflections
Finally, consider and complete the following question - then complete your
reflection shape.
Tuesday - lesson 2 LO: To write the Habitat section of our non-chronological report
Amazing! You have now planned your habitat section of your
non-chronological report! Today, we are going to write the
habitat paragraph.
Before we get started, have a go at this starter activity of up-
levelling a sentence. Try to include a fronted adverbial, an embedded clause,
HQV, adverb openers and powerful adjectives!
Mini-task
Have a read through this modelled write with an example of a
habitat planning box next to it. While you are reading, feel free
to pick out any ideas which you can ‘magpie’ to include within
your own writing.
Key questions:
1) What was your favorite sentence?
2) Why do you think this is a good piece of writing?
3) What are you going to include from this piece within your own writing?
Main task
You are going to use the ideas from your plan to construct
sentences to form this paragraph. Remember, you must
keep looking at your targets and success criteria to ensure
you are including all those narrative techniques we use
within our writing.
Here is the list from your deconstruction you completed
last week. Beside this, you will see a list of sentence openers and technical
vocabulary and ideas you might want to also include:
“Hello! It’s me again! Remember, you can always look at
your deconstruction for inspiration too!”
Post-learning reflections
Finally, consider and discuss this reflection shape with your adult at home.
Wednesday - lesson 3 LO: To plan the ‘Diet’ section of our non-chronological report
In today’s lesson, you are going to plan the ‘Diet’ section of your
non-chronological report. You are also going to read through
chapters 2 & 3 of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ – you can follow
along with Mr. Brain reading these chapters on the school Youtube
channel.
First of all, have a go at these 2 starter activities – the answers for
each activity can be found on the next page
Mini-task
When we talk about diet, we are referring to what your dragon eats! Now it is
important to consider that every dragon is different and their diets are likely to
vary! Have a look at the slide below. Your first task is to research the definition of
each of these words: Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore:
Main task:
You are now going to plan your diet section. This part of your
report is not going to be very long and will contain bullet points
too. Have a look at the example from your deconstruction:
Post-learning reflections
Finally, complete the question and discuss this
reflection shape with your adult at home.
Thursday - lesson 4 LO: To write the ‘Diet’ section of our non-chronological report
Amazing year 4! You are making incredible progress and I am
certain your reports are really starting to take shape nicely. In
today’s lesson, using the ideas from your plan, you are going to
write our your ‘Diet’ section of your non-chronological report.
Task 1
Your first task is to read through your work and to check if you have included all
of the following features and then tick them off if you if you have. Anything that
hasn’t been included so far is going to be a target for you to include within the 2
final sections of your report (Pictures and captions won’t have been completed
yet so don’t worry about that!).
Task 2
Now, using your plan from
yesterday, you can write up
your diet paragraph.
Remember to include a mix of
sentences and bullet points in
this section. Here is the
example from our
deconstruction to offer
guidance and inspiration!
Post-learning reflections
Finally, complete the question and discuss this reflection shape with your adult at
home.
Friday – VE Day Bank Holiday
There are activities set on Education City if you want to do them!
There are 2 comprehensions available and 3 grammar activities (you
don’t not need to complete them all!)
Next week, we will finish off our reports, read even more of the story
and finally publish our work, either writing them up neat or on
Microsoft word!
Well done for your hard work and have an amazing weekend!
