SPaG - The Mystery of the Missing Treasure
Ahoy! The captain of The Black Barnacle needs your help. Yesterday Aisha the Awful and her
cruel crew stole a chest full of lovely treasure, but it has vanished from the captain’s cabin.
The only explanation is that one of Aisha’s own crew has turned against her and has taken
the treasure for themselves!
As Detective on the case, it is your job to find out which pirate stole the treasure before
Aisha the Awful makes her whole crew walk the plank! You have taken down the names of 20
pirates who work on The Black Barnacle. There are also 5 important clues that have been
discovered on the ship.
To solve the
case, you will
need to solve
each clue and
check the
information with
the list of
names. Will you
be able to solve
the mystery and
find out who
stole the
treasure?
Good luck!
The pirate that stole the treasure is ______________________ .
CLUE 1
Some coins from the treasure chest were left behind at the scene of the crime. Decide the
word class of the words in bold. Follow the trail to reveal the job of the culprit.
Remember:
Noun – an object, person or place.
Verb – an action word.
Adjective – a describing word.
Adverb – a word to describe how you do something.
The job of the pirate that stole the treasure must be
____________________________
CLUE 2
Captain Aisha has received an anonymous note from the pirate who stole the treasure. They
are not very good with their spelling or punctuation. Circle the spelling and punctuation
mistakes and write them correctly in the boxes below.
If there are more spelling mistakes the pirate does not have a beard.
If there are more punctuation mistakes the pirate does have a beard.
Spelling Mistakes Punctuation Mistakes
Does the pirate who stole the treasure have a beard? Yes No
CLUE 3
The pirates’ parrots are always repeating things that the pirates have said. Their chatter
can help to solve the crime. Write the parrots’ sentences with the correct punctuation in the
correct box below to reveal the special feature of the thief.
Remember:
Statement – a sentence that shares a fact, opinion or idea.
Question ? – a sentence that we ask to get more information.
Exclamation ! – a forceful statement which expresses high levels of excitement.
Command – a sentence which tells someone what to do.
Statement Question Exclamation Command
If there are more
statements the
pirate has a hook.
If there are more
questions the pirate
has a wooden leg.
If there are more
exclamations the
pirate has an eye
patch.
If there are more
commands the pirate
has an earring.
The most common sentence type is _________________________ so the
pirate’s special feature is _________________________ .
CLUE 4
It’s dinner time on The Black Barnacle but who is eating what? Read the words and decide
which suffixes can be added to them to create new words. Write the completed words on
the correct dinner plates. The plate with the most words will show the favourite food or
drink of the pirate who stole the treasure.
If -less is used the most, the pirate’s favourite food is fish
If -ness is used the most, the pirate’s favourite food is sea biscuits.
If -ment is used the most, the pirate’s favourite drink is rum.
The suffix ______________ is used the most so the treasure thief’s

Activity 1 – Your Reactions
Did you enjoy the video? How did it make you feel? Why might no one have ever seen the girl
even though she lives in the town?
What happened in the beginning, middle and end of the video? Use these images to help you.
Can you write sentences to describe what happened at each part of the story?
Activity 2 – Descriptions
Can you write a list of nouns, adjectives, verbs that you can see in the video? Can you write
a list of adverbs to describe the actions that you see?

Activity 3 – Questions
What would you like to ask the clock tower dancer? Can you write a list of questions you
would like to ask her?
Using these question words may help you: what, where, why, who, how.
Remember: All questions end with a ?
Challenge: Can you think about the responses the clock tower dancer might give. Can you
answer one or more of your questions as the clock tower dancer?
Maths w/c 8th June
This week’s home learning for maths will focus on the
topic of mass/weight. The learning objectives we will try
to achieve are;
- To choose and use appropriate standard units to
estimate and measure mass (g/kg) to the nearest
appropriate unit, using scales.
- To compare and order mass and record the results
using <, > and =
Task 1
Have you got any weighing scales at home?
When using weighing scales it is important to know
we record this type of measurement using grams
(g) and kilograms (kg).
Can you practise measuring items at home using
weighing scales accurately?
Can you use your knowledge of measuring
mass/weight to solve these problems?
Task 2
Have you got any
weighing scales at
home?
When using weighing
scales it is important to
know we record this
type of measurement
using grams (g) and
kilograms (kg).
Can you practise
measuring items at
home using scales
accurately?
Can you try reading
these scales? Be careful
to check what the scale
is going up in as
sometimes
measurements can be
between the numbers!
Item Estimate weight
(g/kg)
Actual weight
(g/kg)
E.g. bottle of
shampoo
400g 500g
Task 3
Can you find items at home that you
could weigh using a set of weighing
scales? You can then record your
results in the table.
Can you make an estimate of how
heavy the items will be in g/kg?
Remember an estimation is just a
good guess!
Remember to include the correct
units! g or kg!
Challenge
How many grams are there in 1kg?
How many grams are there in 2kg?
Task 4
Can you compare the mass/weight of objects using
the signs <, > and =
Be careful when reading the problems- check if
the units are g or kg!
Remember we came up with a useful rhyme to help
us to use the signs correctly “the gator eats the
greater”.
E.g. 200g < 1kg
100g = 100g
You can watch this video to help you remember!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Efzu2slaI
Task 5- Now have a go at using your knowledge of mass/weight to solve these problems.
Useful Links!
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/mostlyPostie/index.html This link has a great interactive weighing postal scales game and the scales can be
adjusted to go up in 10s, 100s etc.
https://www.teacherled.com/iresources/scales/mass/ Another good interactive weighing scales
game.
https://www.thenational.academy/year-1/maths/to-compare-the-mass-of-two-objects-year-1-wk2-1 The Oak National Academy website has lessons
related to comparing mass and weight of objects for year 1. If you use the link this takes you to week 2 where these lessons are taught. This might
be a good starting point to remind you of the basics before you complete the activities in this pack.
Weather!
What is weather?
The weather is how it feels outside. There are lots of different types of weather, for
example: cloudy, windy, rainy.
There are some different types of weather in the table below. Can you design a symbol for each
one?
Sunny
Hot
Cloudy
Rainy
Thunderstorms
Windy
Snowy
Frosty
What is the weather like today?
Weather!
The weather changes, depending on the season. So in winter the weather is different to in summer. What season is it now? Let’s find out what kind
of weather we can expect in that season by creating a weather chart to record the weather over the period of a week. Look out of your window in a
morning and record what weather you see in the chart below. You can use the symbols that you created earlier.
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7
When you have finished look back at your chart. Is this the kind of weather you might expect at this time of year?
Challenge: You could look at the weather forecast in the evening and then check to see if they predicted the correct weather the next day.
Discussion: What is your favourite type of weather? What is your least favourite type of weather? Why?
History of Transport
Week 3- History of aircrafts
Can you remember who invented the first aeroplane? What were the older aeroplanes made of?
What are they made of today? When was the first aeroplane invented?
You can remind yourself about the history of aircrafts by watching this bbc bitesize video. Watch
closely to see how some of the older planes look different to how they look today.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zdm6n39
Have you heard of the words continuity and change? These are important words when learning about
history. Change refers to what is different, continuity refers to what has remained the same.
When looking at the history of aircrafts you should be able to notice some things that are different
between planes now and in the past, but also things that are the same. Have a think and talk to
someone at home about your ideas. Use the pictures from the previous weeks to help you spot what is
the same/different.
Another important word we use in history is ‘chronology’. This refers to dates/events that can be put
in a certain order. There is a chronological order for transport and specifically for aircrafts. Can you
think what/who might go at the start of this order?
Tasks
- Can you create a poster on aircrafts? This could include the continuity and change of the
aircraft and the chronological order of aircrafts. You might want to include the first aircraft,
who it was created by and an aircraft now. It could include the similarities and differences
between the aircrafts and some of the reasons why they were similar/ different. Make sure
you include a title, pictures and key facts. Add colour to make your poster stand out!
- Can you prepare a presentation on the history of aircrafts? You could share some key
facts which you have learnt with people at home or over the phone!
This week we are going to have a go at creating another
piece of artwork using printing. I got this idea from
watching one of my favourite films – UP!
I really like the picture of the house floating away, lifted by
the balloons, so I thought about a way to recreate it using
printing techniques – I used my fingers to create the
balloons!
It was very fun and easy. Why don’t you have a go?
How to make your own UP style
painting:
First, draw something in the
bottom half of your page, floating
somewhere in the middle. It doesn’t
have to be a house, it can be anything
you want… a car, a dinosaur, a
flamingo…
Next, use your pencil to draw a very faint outline in
the shape of a hot air balloon.
Fill your outline with fingerprints. These are all the
little balloons! Use as many different colours as you
can – think about colours you can make by mixing your
paints.
Finally, draw some lines to connect your balloons to
the object that is floating away.
Do you have any other ideas for artwork using
fingerprints? Here are some I found:
What you need:
Paper
Poster paints
A pen
A pencil
Fingers
How is Eid al-Fitr
celebrated around the
world?
Activity 1 – Design your Eid fact
poster.
Once you have watched the video about
Eid al-fitr, you will understand what
Eid al-fitr is, when Eid is, how it is
celebrated and how they know when it
begins.
Write down the information you have
learnt with some fantastic sentences
and pictures!
Activity 2 – Acrostic Poem
about Eid
Can you create an Acrostic poem
all about Eid?
Can you think about the different
things you have learnt about what
happens on the day of Eid and
how it is celebrated?
Muslims across the UK celebrated Eid-al-Fitr last weekend to mark the end of
Ramadan.
The name is often shortened to ‘Eid’ and it is usually a day of celebrations and for
children it often means lots of presents!!
Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid celebrations began on Saturday, 23rd May
and Sunday 24th May.
Things were a bit different this year due to coronavirus lockdown. Traditionally, the
festival is marked with communal prayers in mosques and visits to friends and family.
We share a lot of food and spend quality time with our loved ones.
Watch this video as Amirah decorates the house and gets her hands painted in
preparation for Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
