L ast October, The Christian Education Commission set aside a special Sunday and called it Bible Sunday. We presented Bibles to our 3rd and

4th Graders. We recognize the special Bibles in our own lives. I was extremely impressed with a Bible Ann Andrus brought. It was a family heirloom, a Bible printed in the 1700s by the Sauer Press of Philadelphia. The Sauer Press was well known for printing the Bible in German for the German immigrants that had settled in the Germantown area of Philadelphia, PA. The Sauer’s were members of the German Baptist Brethren, now known as the Church of the Brethren.

T he Christian Ed Commission plans to hold another Bible Sunday. This year’s Bible Sunday will be on October 13 during the morning service.

Zherina Whitten, our 3rd Grader, will be receiving her Bible that morning. We will take time to share the stories of the Bibles we bring.

C hristopher Sauer II (1721-84) took over his father’s print shop during the Revolutionary War. Due to his neutral, pacifistic position,

authorities marched Christopher Sauer off at bayonet point, tormented, arrested, and sought to force him to swear an oath of allegiance to the cause. He refused, due in part, to his ultimate allegiance to God. They seized and sold at auction his property and he was left penniless with just his clothes on his back (Brethren Encyclopedia p.1146).

P lease, bring a Bible from home that has special meaning for you and plan to share on Sunday, October 13 during our Sunday morning worship.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Prayer is the heart of our relationship with God. As co-workers in Christ, these suggestions for the prayers and meditations of your congregation during the next quarter are shared as one method by which we can be spiritually formed together.

A DISTRICT PRAYER

Sunday, October 6

Pray for the ministry of the West Richmond Church of the Brethren in Henrico County, Virginia, who celebrated their one hundredth anniversary as a congregation on September 22. Let us pray that God would enable us to minister creatively in every place and situation.

Sunday, October 13

Pray for Chris C. Foster, who began as pastor of the Oak Grove - South Church of the Brethren in Franklin County, Virginia on July 1. Let us give glory to God for the gifts of the Spirit bestowed upon the church.

Sunday, October 20

Pray for the ministry of the Collinsville Church of the Brethren in Henry County, Virginia, who celebrated their sixtieth anniversary as a congregation on September 15. Let us await with expectation the greater works of God which yet lie unrevealed.

Sunday, October 27

Pray for Jerry W. Naff, who began as pastor of the Boones Mill Church of the Brethren in Franklin County, Virginia on September 1. Let us pray that the Lord of the Harvest will call and send out workers into fields near and far.

David K. Shumate, District Executive Minister

Continuing the work of Jesus.

Peacefully. Simply. Together.

“Leaf me alone!”

What did one autumn leaf say to the other?
