Workout Mistakes that Endanger Your Health
We all know the many benefits of working out:
• Lowers the risk of heart attack• Decreases the risk of cancer• Helps counteract depression• Boosts energy levels• Helps you think clearer• May even slow down the aging process• Looking great!
But it IS possible to
exercise in a way that does
more harm than good.
1. You forget to stretch and don’t warm up.
Stretching accelerates
the speed at which your
body repairs muscles.
Stretching makes muscles more
elastic.This prevents
injury and increases flexibility
to achieve greater gains.
Experts find that “static”
stretching alone doesn’t seem to
make much difference for
workouts.
10 minutes each day of mobility work are instead recommended.
After your workout use a foam-roller massage to alleviate any muscle pain or
tightness.
2. You don’t drink enough waterSome basic facts about staying hydrated.
Think about it–that sweat comes from somewhere.
You need to replenish
fluids like it’s your job!
Signs you are not getting enough water include:
• Dry mouth• Lightheadedness• An irregular heartbeat• Muscle cramps• Orange-tinted urine
Men should drink approximately 13 cups of liquid a day… and even more
if you’re working out!
If you get tired of plain water eat water-dense fruits and vegetables.
3. You just do cardio
Cardio is simply any exercise that raises your heart rate.
Cardio offers many health benefits:
• Reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels
• Burns extra calories, helping keep body fat levels down
• Decreases risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes
However, doing just cardio
exercise with no strength
training keeps you from
achieving your optimum results.
Strength training increases your metabolism to
burn more calories, while
cardio burns off both fat and
muscle.
4. You push yourself too hard
Studies have shown that, while exercise has health benefits,
exercising harder doesn’t increase the benefits.
Also, high impact activity can hurt joints and “chronic training” for endurance events can even damage the heart.
To really maximize your workout, avoid these mistakes.
