Dear Gas Market Stakeholder
The 2016 Australian Domestic Gas Outlook conference, the fourth of a forum series that sector stakeholders have rated highly, is not only about east coast issues – but, inevitably, they will be a major area of focus at a time when the market is under intense scrutiny.
As the Energy Supply Association observes (in its submission to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission east coast gas inquiry) “the market is currently in a state of transition” in an environment where production costs are rising, political uncertainty is hampering development in a number of regions and, most notably, the LNG business is driving a step change in demand.
One of the hallmarks of the ADGO conference is that it brings together explorers, producers, pipeliners, retailers, consumer representatives, industrial users and the arms of governance to facilitate a serious exchange of information and opinion. The 2016 event will live up to this reputation, again offering a smorgasbord of presentations and well-regarded speakers on the key topics.
Concerns that the market is “broken” will be aired alongside views about how to make a smooth and efficient transition to what ACCC submissions describe as “a new equilibrium point.”
Removing obstacles to gas supply and the continuing concerns about end-user prices will be high on the ADGO agenda – along with such “hot button” topics as access to economic and tradeable transmission capacity.
Participant reaction to the first three ADGO events has been strongly positive and I am sure attendees at the 2016 conference will not be disappointed with what is on offer.
I look forward to seeing you there.

Pre-conference full-day in-depth learning sessions – Monday 7 March 2016
4th annual
Australia’s premier event for all domestic gas market stakeholders
7-10 March 2016 I Four Seasons Hotel Sydney
Separately
bookableIn-depth learning session A: Forecasting gas prices across jurisdictions and understanding potential scenarios and their implications for users
This in-depth session is designed for all professionals involved in the gas industry whose organisations will be impacted by movements in the gas price. Participants will be able to discuss and learn about the key drivers of prices such as LNG developments, consumption patterns and price impacts on demand, carbon policies, network utilisation, regulatory outcomes and many other factors. This session will lay bare the costs of the gas supply industry and what is driving pricing and what may drive it going forward.
Oakley Greenwood and its partners completed for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science the recently published Gas Price Trends Review - a review of gas pricing over the last 10 years, and the drivers of those price trends by each component. This landmark work covers large industrial customers and residential customers in detail for all the separate jurisdictions across Australia.
Key take-aways and analysis:• Understandingthe historical price trends in the two key market segments• Analysing what has driven those price movements and why they are so different by state and market sector• Examining the potential future price, supply and demand drivers over the next 5yearsineachsectorandstate/territory• Breaking down prices into major cost component such as wholesale gas prices, transmission prices, distribution prices and retail cost components
Session facilitator
Jim Snow Executive Director Oakley Greenwood
In-depthLearningSessionB:What does a competitive gas market need? Learning from international experiences in designing a more efficient gas market
This interactive session is specifically tailored for professionals involved in building or developing policy from either a regulatory, departmental or industry perspective. It combines theory with practice to provide a thorough understanding of the key regulatory principles and energy policy around the world. This session will provide different perspectives and experiences on gas regulation and lessons that can be applied to Australia’s domestic market. Demystifying the worldwide gas industry and its regulation, the workshop will put Australia’s gas industry in context for industry leaders and policy makers.
Dr. Makholm will facilitate this unique workshop that brings together his in-depth knowledge of the Australian gas sector (as well of those in Europe and North America and elsewhere), rigorous understanding of regulatory principles and a thorough global analysis of the core rules involved in designing efficient gas markets.
Key take-away skills/benefits:The session will clarify the debate and direct a regulatory plan by:• Reconciling market participants’ differing perspectives and set out the justification for reform• Reflecting on the consequences of regulatory paths in Europe and North America• Exploring reform options for Australia that will facilitate gas market liquidity, investment and competitive entry

“Working papers, research papers, issues papers, stakeholder submissions and hearing transcripts present a chequered portrayal of Australia’s gas market functionality, making it difficult for the reviewers to convincingly target regulatory reform. ADGO 2016 is an opportunity to gather all industry stakeholders under one roof to clarify the debate”
Jeff Makholm Senior Vice President NERA Consulting (2016 speaker)
“The ADGO conference series has been the perfect gathering that attracts gas sector leaders to reveal their challenges and prospective solutions, and ADGO 2016 will no doubt, be an opportunity to gain salient insights.”
Barry Goldstein Executive Director, Energy and Resources SA Department of State Development (2016 speaker)
“The Domestic Gas Outlook has caused numerous enquiries from the Productivity Commission through to AEMC all demanding greater competition and transparency, which may be a catalyst for change. The ADGO 2016 conference will provide an invaluable forum for Australian gas leaders, industry officials, regulators and major industry stakeholders to discuss the key issues involved”
Richard Cottee Managing Director Central Petroleum (2016 speaker)
Registration and morning coffee for both sessions is at 08:30 and sessions will conclude at 17:00. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea provided. Choose between:
