Finding Radiance Under Much Pain YesterdayHaving a conversation with someone dearest to my heart, I was called plain, regular and
frumpy. At first I didn’t know what to say. I thought how someone could say such mean words. I wanted to go through the phone and slap the mess out of my dearest friend whom I love so much. Days passed and I would not let it go I kept bring up the word frumpy. It was not until yesterday, walking from the bank it came to me, “Finding Radiance Under Much Pain Yesterday”.
I was not mad at my friend for saying this to me; however, I was upset because it was true. My radiance was hidden under much pain and it was about time to let it go. As much as I thought I did not carry anymore pain from my past experiences; deeper pain was still in existences. Having someone to care enough to tell you the truth is a very key component to life’s journey. In that moment it was time to do another self evaluation. This issue is themed, “Consistent and Committed Living”. As the Spring season approaches we see the blossom of flowers due to the consistent and commitment of planting, watering and nurturing. Just like with our lives. If we do not become consistent and committed to watering and nurturing our mind, body and spirit we will not grow. Here are a few questions to ponder:
Have you set your mind to a committed and consistent life?
Do expect things in your life to change?
Do you want your life to change?
Is there someone in your life to help you change? Commit? And are they consistent?
How would you rate your level of commitment and consistency?
Have you let go of past hurt and unpleasant pain? Are you ready to let it go?
Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. Proverbs 16:3 Committing your works starts with “YOU”. How can you help others when you stand in the need of help? Dig deeper into yourself. Surround yourself with people that will not tell you what they feel but what is true. The only way your radiance will come thru is to commit to working on yourself every day. Sometimes it is a painful process, but if you work on yourself knowing that the Lord will establish you to a new and better place of peace, joy, love, long life, etc. it’s worth it. I am grateful my dearest friend was honest with me because it was through that care and love my radiance is coming out.
Happy Spring,
Rhonda

Sonjanette Terese Arthur was born in Dothan, Alabama. She is no
stranger to church as the granddaughter of preachers she has been
singing since the age of 4 years old. There was a time in her life when
she fell away from God and the devil had her bound. Sonjanette
wanted to return to the church, but after all she had done and been
through didn’t feel worthy.
Sonjae started her first solo project in 2008, but had to withdraw after
the doctor told her she had a growth on her vocal chords and if she
didn’t stop singing it would ruin her voice forever. Nine months of not
singing, taking her meds, praying for a healing and believing God; the
doctor gives a clean bill of health and without surgery. Yes the doctor
wanted to cut on her throat immediately, but she chose to wait on God.
“By his stripes I am healed”, she said. This devil has made two attempts
on her life since then but through the grace of God she is still standing.
The bible states in Proverbs 22:6. “train a child up in the
way of the Lord and when they get older they will not
depart from it.” Well, needless to say remembering the
word of God that was poured into her as a child began
to surface and now she is back stepping on the devils
head and allowing God to use her.
Sonjae has served as the praise leader at Kingdom
Harvest Ministries of Faith for the past seven years. The
teachings and nurturing of her Pastor Yalonda Wiggins
Axon through the leadership of God has helped to
evolve her into a powerhouse on fire for God. She has
become a wonderful writer, songstress and hopes her
words and God’s anointing will draw men and women
unto Him. For God is the way and deserves all the glory.
Sonjae is also an established hair stylist in the Orlando,
Fl. area.

Spring is the season where the vernal equinox occurs in the northern hemisphere of the universe. The time where the weather begins to warm and the rain season is at its most. It is the blossoming of a range of plant species, and the activities of animals or the special smell of soil that has reached the temperature of micro flora to flourish. Seasons are significant in every aspect of our lives and human beings. Old things pass away behold new things spring up, can you not perceive them. (Isaiah 43:18-19). When God made the seasons I believe He was also setting the seasons of our lives as well. For example, Winter is a time of bareness, cold weather, waiting for the new season and so everything looks bleak, but even in the winter season our life there is work going on we just can’t see it. The soil is stagnant or so it appears but there is life growing in the soil that is invisible to our eyes, but not God’s.
It is in the winter that God is preparing us for the works that He is doing in our lives. Although we can’t see it with our naked eyes and we become impatient wondering if things are really happening as God has promised, God is working all the time. He has put things in place and positioned us right where He needs us for this time in our lives. It is difficult to be patient especially when it seems like all hell is breaking at your home or in your family. But we must not get weary when God is doing His work. That is why winter is a time of rest and looking within, understanding that you are not the creator but the created.
Now that the spring has begun we must prepare ourselves for what God is about to do next in our lives, whether it is our finances, ministry, business or home
there is undoubtedly some cleaning that needs to be done. Naturally, we clean out for spring, changing the winter clothes for spring, clearing out any excess papers we have no need of, or perhaps giving our homes a real good cleaning so it look and smell good. Whatever you do this is comparable to our spiritual cleaning. How do you begin to clean out your mind, soul, and spirit of the spiritual clutter, well that is what I am going to show you because I am doing it too! We must take stock of anything precipitated from the past whether it is a mistake we made or hurt we caused. If you are the one who was hurt the same holds true you have to get it out of your spirit. We have to discard those things that cause us to think unholy or unsavory thoughts about a past relationship, client, boss, coworker, friend or family member. The longer you hold that toxic attitude in the longer it holds you back from receiving what God have for you. The key is how to effectively discard the toxic thoughts, people and situations in our lives.
First, we need to get real with ourselves and that requires having a heart to heart with God and letting Him show us the errors of our ways. This can be difficult especially if you have not done it. God loves, He is our father and when we humble ourselves He will respond to you. He will help you to face the demons in your life, impart His grace, mercy to help you begin to shed the thoughts you have about yourself, others and He will replace it with wisdom to help you focus on the plans He has for you instead. When you go to God He will not push you away, but He will gently move you into a closer relationship with Him which is what He desires of His beloved children. God is faithful and just and He will readily come to you to help you to

WISE LIVING
clean out the clutter in your thoughts and emotions.Second, when God moves people out of your life do not try to reason with Him as to why that person is important in your life. So you may have had an encounter with a person who really was important in a time of your life when you needed a mentor or ministering friend, but now God needs you to trust Him to give you the words and revelations you need from Him alone! This is God’s way of getting you to entrust all your needs personal and emotional to Him! He is our Heavenly father and He knows what our needs are better than anyone, even our pastors, friends, and parents. Everyone is not your friend, WOW! God knows what our true worth is because He created us in His image!! He made each of us unique and special. No two people on this earth are alike, even identical twins are different.
Third, ask God what He is doing in this season in
your life, I promise He will answer you. God does not need to speak to others to talk with you. When He does talk through others for you it is to confirm and to enlighten you that you are important to Him and the Kingdom. God loves when we get close to Him and have a real heart to heart. Love the lord your God with all your soul with all your might because He loves you that much more. God will not forsake us nor leave us, so that when we come to him He is willing and more than able to listen to us and to give us the grace to hear Him.
Fourth, start making plans according to what God has revealed to get some things done. For example, if he tells you that He wants you to go to seminary, you can start finding out about seminary schools. Start where God tells you because it will make you feel like you are not just being idle. God will give you direction as He deems necessary. Asking God for

Ten years ago, Devon Franklin started in the entertainment business as an intern. Today he is a rarity: an African-American studio executive at the forefront of one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world.
Franklin shared the story of his
journey from intern to executive with a

Conversation with Devon Franklin” at
the 12th Annual Hollywood Black Film
Festival (HBFF). The topic of discussion
was one that Franklin is acutely aware
of; the balancing act of maintaining
your faith in the conflicting world of
Hollywood.
He sat down with Tanya Kersey, Founder
and Executive Director of the Hollywood Black Film
Festival, to give the HBFF participants a insider’s look
into the “Business” from a faith-based perspective,
and food for thought in considering their own motives,
methods and actions for pursuing their individual
version of success.
Franklin’s faith has been a prominent theme throughout
his life, Franklin believes that his faith is a primary factor
for his success despite many negative perceptions
surrounding the Hollywood film industry “For some,”
Franklin said, “the ‘evils’ of the film industry seem

As a native of Oakland, California,
Franklin who once had dreams
of playing professional football,
decided early on that the he wanted
to be in the entertainment business,
despite having no idea how he would
get there. He was later accepted
to college at both the University of
California Los Angeles (UCLA) and
the University of Southern California
(USC), and decided that it was God’s
will for him to attend USC, a decision
which he credited to his success in
the industry.
A pivotal moment in Franklin’s career came with his

Unpacking
“War Witch”: Art Imitating Life
by Odell and Leah Ruffin
When one conjures up images
of war, the last thing that
would come to mind from a
Western perspective are the faces
of children. This notion is both
challenged and blown wide open
with the film “War Witch,” [Rebelle]
which situates its audience in the
consciousness of teenage girl forced
into armed conflict as a child soldier
in Africa.
The film which premiered in
selected theaters around the
country on March 1st masterfully
depicts the harsh realities of
children being forcibly recruited
as child soldiers in order to kill,
sabotage and become agents of
war, involved in a conflict that they
barely understand. Situated in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC), War Witch tells the story
of “Komona,” a young girl who
in a flashing moment goes from
playing with her friends to being
forced to murder her parents and
join the ranks of a youth fighting
unit with the “Rebels”. Komona’s
world is turned upside down and
she tries to make sense of the things
that are beginning to happen in
her life. Upon her kidnapping and
being forced to join this ruthless
group, Komona is told to forget
her parents, and to start seeing

She is the only girl amongst
the group, led by a sinister
“Commandant-Rebelle”
who uses intimidation, force,
coercion and a mysterious mind
enhancing substance called
“Magic Milk,” to keep the youth
engaged and brainwashed into
fighting. Komona who is haunted
throughout the film by the
ghosts of her parents one day
demonstrates a psychic capability
which saves the rebel group
from a potential ambush. From
this moment on, she is referred
to as “War Witch,” since her
Commander and militia members
believed that her special powers
allowed her to see things no one
else could.
The film continues to explore
the life of a child soldier from a
very nuanced and detailed day
to day level and understood
from the perspective of a 12
year old. Throughout the film
Komona experiences tremendous
amounts of pain, love, heartache,
revenge and rebirth, signified
by the birth of her son on the
side of an abandoned road.
After overcoming the most
horrid circumstances, Komona is
shown riding off into the sunset,
unphased and determined
- seemingly imagining and
contemplating her future as she
tries to start all over again.
Rachel Mwanza who plays
the lead role of Komona, is
fascinating and powerful.
Although her words are few,
the emotions that she is able to
convey through facial expression
and actions give great depth to
her character.
It is possible that Rachel’s ability
to masterfully channel such
heartache and pain is a direct
outcome of her own reality.
Rachel was abandoned by her
family at a young age and had
been living on the streets of
Kinshasa, the largest city in the
DRC, along with thousands of
other street children for some
time when she was discovered
and selected for the role.
We had an opportunity to meet
Rachel Mwanza and the film’s
Director Kim Nguyen while they
were visiting Los Angeles making
press rounds for the film. Kim
and Rachel sat at ease, like old
friends, casually discussing their
experiences working on the film
together in a cozy, swank Beverly
Hills hotel with several members
of the media.
Rachel, like any teenager, was
not particularly thrilled to be
sitting a room with adults simply
just talking, and may have much
rather preferred to be doing
what young people do these
days. However she answered
questions and was engaged and
graceful, answering honestly and
meaningfully as Kim translated
our American tones and English
language questions into her
native language of French.
Kim and Rachel discussed some
of the challenges of making the
film; including overcoming the
fact that Rachel had no previous
acting experience or traditional
home and social structures in
place.”It was demanding,”
Nguyen said. “When you are a
kid in the streets, you are just
there. The structure was not given
to her...but she was there every
day, for six, seven or even eight
hours to act, which demanded a
lot of concentration.”
Although Rachel has already
accomplished and overcome
significant barriers and
challenges at the tender age
of 15, she asserted her work
has just begun. When asked
about her future in film, Nguyen
noted that she would first be
enrolling in a formal school to
ensure she received the proper
education. However beyond her
own personal pursuits; she wants
to make sure she can help as
many street children in Kinshasa
as possible. “She is looking to
leaving her city in a few years,”
Nguyen noted. “The most
important thing for her is to find
a way to take care of all the kids
in Kinshasa. She can really relate
16 WISEMAGAZINE.ORG \ APRIL - JUNE 2013
to the suffering they are going
through, and it hurts her to
see them going through those
things.”
Among other challenges
Nguyen noted, he shared
that it took him 10 years to
complete the script for War
Witch. “It’s always in a writing
phase. You never have pre-
conceived expectations of what
the film should be. I guess a
lot of them [challenges] were
me facing myself writing this
story, although it was a little
scary for the crew....in past films,
pressures of the industry made
the scripts constrained. [With
War Witch], I just wanted to be
true and authentic, and not try
to make it feel structured.”
The authenticity of the film can
be traced back to Nguyen’s
original inspiration for War
Witch; an article he read about
young Burmese twins who lead
a revolutionary rebel group back
in the 1970’s. Nguyen also relied
on a relationship with a United
Nations Worker stationed in
Central Africa who worked
primarily on issues dealing
with child soldiers. Nguyen
was able to have conversations
with former child soldiers in the
region to learn firsthand about
their experiences.
The location for the film, which
is shot exclusively in the DRC,
was chosen for both its natural
beauty and perfect backdrop
for Nguyen’s film, but also as a
central sub-Saharan nation that
has been ravished by armed
conflict for nearly the past 15
years. The conflict in the Congo
has killed over 5 million people.
The fighting is primarily driven
by economic interests; the DRC
is estimated to have trillions
of dollars worth of minerals in
its soil and below the earth’s
surface, including gold, tin,
tungsten, copper, coltan cobalt
and tantalum, a metal often
used in cell phones and other
electronic hardware.
According to a 2008 UN Child
Soldier Global Report, there
were an estimated 30,000
children that had been recruited
by force or coercion into rebel
fighting groups throughout
the Democratic Republic of
the Congo (DRC) by the end of
2003.
The report notes that girls are
often used as sexual slaves
when recruited into armed
forces. War Witch explores
this moment in Komona’s
life, when she is raped by her
Commander and eventually
bears his child. One would
expect this scene to be difficult
to watch, however Nguyen
approached this scene, and the
film overall, in a strikingly serene
manner, using Komona’s young
and impressionable eyes and
experiences to tell the story.
“That was really the intention.
There is very little graphic
violence, but yet people are
troubled by these things. This
is an idealistic film,” Nguyen
noted. “The storytelling is done
in the hopes that a girl that may
have actually lived Komona’s
story was able to do so in the
most delicate of ways.
War Witch sheds more light
on a nation still suffering from
conflict and bloodshed, the
humanitarian crisis of child
soldiers, and the personal
struggles and challenges of
Mwanza, a teenager who just
two years ago was living on the
street is now the lead character
in an Oscar-nominated film; and
the Director, who is determined
to tell inspired, authentic and
socially relevant stories while
maintaining a truly creative
process to do so.
The inherent struggles present

It’s a school, which sits in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina. The youngest student is 3 ½ years old and the oldest student is a senior citizen. At this music school students are encouraged to develop their musical skills. The mission of the school is the belief that music is an important building block to life skills like: self- discipline, self-esteem, team work, cultural understanding, citizenship, and communication.
In an interview with Nyshia Cook, the Executive Director and owner of NC Music Center, LLC, “it is critical to have music appreciation in schools in today’s world, because it is simply connecting with the arts. Music has to do with a child’s development,” Cook said. “It allows them to be creative, just like allowing someone to work on math and science. [Music] builds up the fundamentals for what
[students] need physically. It connects them to something emotionally.”
Cook said she never thought she would become an entrepreneur and own a school. Cook also teaches at the school. “I knew I would do something in music,” Cook said. “I thought I would be teaching lessons one-on-one.”
The NC Music Center, LLC is the only African-American owned school located in Charlotte, N.C.; however, it is diverse and consists of all nationalities.
The NC Music Center started in 2007 under the name Piano Passion, while Cook was still enrolled in college. “Music was a part of my life. I also played piano,” she said.

After studying professionally for 17 years with an instructor outside of school; one day she started studying voice professionally. “The teacher didn’t teach me how to read music, I taught myself,” Cook said. “I learned to sing with an instructor, but everything was self-taught, as far as [playing the] piano and reading music.” Cook said while she was in college, people started asking her, “Can you teach me how to play the piano?”
Cook attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C. and then transferred to University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she studied music. “I had been studying piano since I was four-years-old, but when I was in college, there were things that I had already read in previous books,” Cook said. Nevertheless, Cook said first she started teaching voice, and then we added on violin, guitar, and percussion.
“God just kept adding things to the plan,” she said, laughing during the interview.Despite the fact Cook watched her family work 9-to-5 jobs growing up, she said she didn’t know she would own a school, but she wanted to have financial security. “I came from a place where people lived paycheck to paycheck,” she said. Cook said what she values most when she arrives at NC Music Center everyday is the ability to show someone that God can bless you too. “I’m able to implement my creativity and inspire others to do their best,” she said.
When there is something God is telling you to do. It’s not going to be a walk in the park. It’s work. You are going to sweat, but it’s worth it. It’s what you are doing for yourself.
In January 2013, Cook opened up a second school---SC Academy of Music in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Cook said she is in no rush to stop teaching and become the manager. That’s a long-term goal she has in mind since she own two schools now. “I want to continue to build a brand. God has elevated me to entrepreneurship…making money, providing service and have [many] people provide that service. Make a successful living. I want to have other businesses such as a clothing store.”
Although, Cook has two schools she said she still faces challenges. “It’s hard for me to overcome moving on to the next level. There is only one thing that keeps me going---my faith in God.”Cook said she is reminded of the scripture Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”“This is the scripture that pushes me. God won’t put me in a situation, where this won’t prosper. The second location is the next level, building up the enrollment in that school,” she said.

founded by Will Smith and James Lassiter, one of Smith’s business partners. After graduating from USC in 2000, Franklin began working full-time for Overbrook Entertainment as James’ second assistant where he continued to learn more about film production and development. This may not have been the glamorous Hollywood job that many often hope for, but for Franklin, it was more than enough. “The bible says - do not despise the day of small beginnings. God sets the challenges to prepare you for where he wants to take you. We get discouraged, and miss the blessing right in front of us,” said Franklin.
Franklin was optimistic about his future with Overbrook and hoped to climb the corporate ladder, however over the next three years, Franklin became frustrated at how slowly things seemed to be moving and began seeking God, praying and fasting about his future in the entertainment business.
“I realized that no matter where I’m trying to go, there is a direct connection between the ‘then’ and ‘now,’ Franklin said. “God says He’s directing this story, so [be] patient.” He said that he asked himself, “Do you want this because it will bring you glory? or do want this because there people out there struggling and you can help them?”
Franklin eventually turned in his two week notice to Overbrook, and after a short period of unemployment, he began working as an executive with Edmond’s Entertainment. The doors of opportunity soon opened again for Franklin as he was offered a jobas a Creative Executive with Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) Entertainment.
When rumors began circulating that the company would be up for sale, affecting the jobs of countless studio executives, Franklin was again faced with circumstances beyond his control. “One day for whatever reason,” he shared, “they decided to lay off all the film executives. I realized that wouldn’t be good for me. After months of going to work I started to get more depressed. And one day I was at the office staring at my computer, turned it off went into the bathroom and had it out with God.”
When the rumors of the company’s potential sale came to fruition, Franklin’s concerns were soon laid to rest when his new bosses at Sony Pictures asked that he stay with the company.
Franklin’s career has flourished since his transition to Sony, now serving as Senior Vice President of Production for the entertainment giant. Despite the countless uncertainties that Franklin faced throughout his career, his Christian faith, highlighted by his prayer life and regular conversations with God

NORMAL AGING, MEDICATIONS AND MENTAL IMPAIRMENT
How to Determine and Read the Signs of Memory LossBy Dr. Mariana Dangiolo
If you’re spending more time hunting for lost keys than you did last year, don’t panic. As you age, slight memory loss can be expected under certain conditions.
According to Dr. Mariana Dangiolo, assistant professor of internal medicine at the Orlando, Florida-based University of Central Florida College of Medicine, and a geriatric medicine specialist at the college’s physician practice, UCF Pegasus Health, slight memory loss as one ages can be expected under certain conditions. In fact, approximately 60 percent of women undergoing perimenopause and menopause report difficulty remembering everyday information like names and phone numbers...or why they walked into a room. If you are experiencing symptoms of memory loss, don’t automatically assume the worst. The explanation for memory loss may be as simple as the normal aging process.
Normal age-related memory loss can include the following:
• Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later • Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook • Occasionally needing help to use the settings on a microwave or to record a television show

SENIOR WISDOM
APRIL - JUNE 2013 / WISEMAGAZINE.ORG 23
By Hana Mahmoud
I spoke with Michael McCauley, a former legislation and political research analyst for the State of Washington, about a’Ali, he said; “Committed, consistent, concerned; one of the better human beings I’ve known. First time I spoke with him he was talking about helping people. He is a truly exceptional human being.
What can be said about a man who authors a new word and it is published in the dictionary; but does not want to talk about this or any distinguishing accomplishments? I became intrigued to share the enduring spirit and journey of a'Ali De Sousa with our readers. I reflected upon the word he introduced to the English language “HUMANCENTRIC.”
Humancentric - to hear, understand, move and acknowledge our nature with calm, empathy and nurturing thought that releases intelligent compassion in the world. (www.urban dictionary.com)
Hana: So I asked a’Ali, “What are some additional noted accomplishments?”
a’Ali: They are not important Hana, they don’t make me any different than anyone else,
and certainly there are people of far greater achievement.” I am fascinated by stories of scripture and prophets I really connect to the circumstances in these words. In modern life I think of Mother Theresa, Rumi, Ghandi, Dr. King and many others. Hana: Sitting quietly with this powerful built man I felt a radiating presence and energy. This is shattered by the soft spoken contrast of a voice which falls easily on the ears. Decades later while maintaining a career in computer technology consulting, he has moved forward in his passion to be an accomplished writer, actor and filmmaker.
I was curious as to how he got started. A once quiet and shy teen, he tells how his passion for acting was ignited in those years after a teacher invited him to get involved with drama. a’Ali stumbled on a feeling of freedom and acceptance, an outlet that helped him survive tumultuous adolescence in foster care and the overt oppression of racism of the times. His eyes mist as he speaks of Robert Dolan, that special teacher. He relates with sincere joy that he had the honor of thanking him after recently receiving the lead
role in a new FOX film scheduled for international release late 2013.
There is a commanding awe in De Sousa’s presence and in other moments a seemingly innocent man. I wondered what inspired such a soul of apparent contrasts. So I asked.
a’Ali: I am inspired by life Hana, as long as I have breath I hope to do this. This world, this universe… people are all so amazing! What a gift this journey is that we live, with its angst, joy, sorrow and celebration; it is all quite wondrous. I am reminded of this verse in I Corinthians: 1-2.
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and

• Getting confused about the day of the week, but figuring it out later • Sometimes having trouble finding the right word • Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control • Making occasional bad decisions • Sometimes feeling weary of work, family and social obligations • Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when routines are disrupted
Early Signs of Alzheimer’sWhile it is now understood that cases of “mild cognitive impairment” — cognitive changes that are serious enough to be noticed by the individuals experiencing them or to other people — is a precursor to Alzheimer’s
disease (approximately 15 percent of people will go from having mild cognitive impairment to early Alzheimer’s), both are characterized by memory loss, especially short-term memory loss.
“Stressful situations, life-changing events and even certain medications have been linked to mild cognitive impairment,” says Dr. Dangiolo. “Unfortunately, the fear of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease prevents many people from discussing memory loss with their doctors.”
The early signs of Alzheimer’s may vary by individual, but the most common signs include:
• Memory loss, especially when it comes to new information • Challenges in planning or solving problems (following a familiar recipe, keeping track of monthly bills, etc.) • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or during leisure activities • Confusion about times and places • Trouble understanding visual images and special relationships • New difficulties when speaking or writing • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps • Decreased or poor judgment • Withdrawal from work or social activities • Changes in mood and personality, such as confusion, depression or anxiety
The Facts
According to Dr. Dangiolo, numerous drugs have been shown to produce mild cognitive impairment and may create or aggravate Alzheimer's-type symptoms. Most of the drugs that cause mild cognitive impairment include a property called "anti-cholinergic." Most of these medications are used for relieving intestinal cramps or bladder irritability and are labeled "anti-spasmodic.”
There are 17 additional types of drugs used for many other purposes that also may have anti-

cholinergic effects, such as antiemetics, antihistamines, acid blockers, antiparkinsonian drugs, antidepressants, muscle relaxants and antipsychotics. To accurately diagnosis clinical memory loss, a neuropsychological evaluation is recommended. If you’ve noticed a recent change in your memory, contact your doctor. He or she can evaluate your overall health to determine whether any medical conditions may be affecting your memory. While there are no “cures” for memory loss, doctors can help manage the symptoms and sometimes even slow the progression. Drugs for the manifestations of Alzheimer's disease are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Tacrine, Rivastigmine, Galantamine and Donepezil), and an NMDA receptor antagonist (memantine). Psychosocial interventions can help with behavior and emotional reactions.
In the end, Cook has a vision for NC Music Center and SC Academy of Music. She said her vision is for both of the schools to continue to grow. “I want to [Become] a business that inspires, and contributes to its community by instilling confidence and self-purpose in the individuals that live here,” she said.

God resurrected Holly, causing her to recover her lost voice and sense of personal identity, which had previously been stolen. He used a very unorthodox technique, forcing her to endure a prolonged season of pruning and confinement, in order to free and restore. She emerged from this season with a renewed sense of hope, and deep conviction that others can be similarly rejuvenated if they can see the redemptive potential in their difficult circumstances. Orchid had the pleasure of interviewing Holly.
1.How did you get where you are today?I was forced to seek Him daily for uniquely prepared guidance, and sift through the multitude of voices which argued in my head and heart. Orchid helped me practice and meet other courageous women. God helped me change my focus from my ability to speak to my burden for people who needed my message. I am reminded of this scripture in Is. 26:12 “Lord, you establish peace for us; All that we have accomplished, you have done for us. “
2. What are you most passionate about? Be yourself! It is your highest calling. People need to recognize the unique attributes they
Keri is a wife, mother and grandmother. After dating for 6 years (yes, I am serious!) my husband Kevin and I have been happily married for almost 9 years and are proud to say we successfully survived blending a family!
Together, we have three grown daughters ages 30, 25 & 22, two sons-in-law & 6 grandchildren. And yes…we are empty-nesters and proud of it!
After attending business school and working in the corporate world for many years, I discovered my passion…educating people about how foundational water is to health, wellness and disease prevention. In 2007, after being sick and tired of seeing my friends and family “sick and tired”, I realized God had deposited a HUGE blessing right in my lap. He wanted me to get the word out about it! He has confirmed to me over and over that so many of us are “desecrating the temples He has given us (our physical bodies) and many are sick and dying before completing the work He has for them here”. So, I started Water4MyHealth to focus on spreading the word about the healthiest water on the plant…Kangen Water by Enagic. I had no idea it would grow the way it has, tripling in size last year; and, we are on target for even more exponential growth in 2012!

1) How did you get where you are today? That's a great question. I got here by traveling some painful roads that had the thread of redemption through each of them. The healing God has done in my life motivates me to help others get out of the trenches of fear, hopelessness, uncertainty and oppression. The freedom I have received fuels my drive to see others healed and whole, knowing who they were created to be, and living their God-given destinies. I love seeing the special, unique beauty each person brings to this incredible masterpiece God is designing. I love God, I love people and I hate injustice.
2) What are you most passionate about?I am most passionate about igniting God-given destinies. Too many people wander through life unaware of their purpose. I want to help them discover and live out the amazing wonder of God's destiny for their lives.
3) If you could do anything what would it be?
Founder and Director of Mercy House, Susan Hulet, has worked with single women for over 30 years. She served hundreds of families in the DFW area as a Certified Professional Midwife for 19 years as well as mentoring women in her pastoral ministry with her husband for 30 years. The burden to more profoundly impact single pregnant women with their unique needs and struggles came in 1994, with the inception of Mercy House in 1997. if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”a’Ali: I think in this scripture there is great meaning. Love for family and humanity inspires me. I look at the frailties’ of my own personal life and aspire to do better from lessons learned. I strive to take these experiences into my writing and work in film. I see myself… people as beautiful creations evolving every moment in becoming who they are. I trust in the Divine Power that there is the opportunity to leave something of value from which my loved ones can benefit. There is nothing like family and those special people who in spirit and love become your family.Hana: Beneath a sometimes boyish softness to his countenance, I see a man intensely driven. I asked him about that strong drive.
a’Ali: I might sound dorky … my dream for others inspires me Hana. The reality that the spark of light within each of us is a precious gift from The Divine, that each breath can bring hope; that redemption is always possible. We as people with all our flaws and brokenness can let the spark of our soul shine into good works. It is not about ‘history’ to me Hana. It is about ‘Our-story.’ So much of humankind’s legacy is untold. I seek to tell those stories of forgotten people. There are many lessons to be learned as we study the Diaspora of Humanity…
I am also very fortunate to have a wonderful and talented friend and creative colleague Nicole to help in the development of these stories. We have completed several feature films and a series that we are working hard to bring to the screen. I still dream of making a difference in the world for the better.Hana: a’Ali, actors often speak of great pain or tragedies that effected their life; what about yours?
a’Ali: Yes, I think all of our lives come with this. Death of parents and siblings, lost relationships all take us through grief…life can be a challenging learning process. Sometimes it is the God-given circumstance we inherit; sometimes it is our own making…I certainly have learned that. In some ways overcoming adversity in my life has always been the ability to find the center of the storm. I can’t remember not hearing that internal voice and dialogue…I call it the angels whispers. The spiritual life within sustains in difficult moments. I hope to release a book this winter called “Angels Whisper.” I think writing has always been a source of connectedness to my spiritual life. I think pain is a message to help awaken us.
Hana: The deep an intense look in a’Ali’s eyes cannot be missed as he speaks. It is as if I can see him traveling somewhere far or drifting on unknown worlds. Then in an instant he returns before I begin to question him again. You have worked at this for more than a few decades. Now you are
starring in a movie?
a’Ali: I don’t know if I’m starring I do have what the director/writer Hiroshi Nakajima calls the lead role. It is exciting to work with him. I really align with this role and the story and message he is telling. Hiroshi is a perfectionist; a virtue and vice we share.Hana: Krystle Tabangcura is the producer and casting director for a’Ali’s upcoming film “Secret Children” she said; "Ali captured me the first moment he started to do his scene. I felt like he was this character. His dedication really comes through in his acting so much so that you forget he's even acting. He's just so natural that you really believe him. You really believe IN him." I asked a’Ali to tell me about the project and if he had ever lost faith that this moment would come?
a’Ali: The film is a SciFi suspense drama titled “Secret Children.” It is a profoundly human story and plausible given the context of present medical science and technology. Hope I got you curious (a Machiavellian smile tweaks the corners of his mouth) as to faith…I don’t think it’s ever about losing faith. Hope is a form of faith; it is part of our very nature as humans despite differences in belief systems. Faith is part of who I am. “Believe that something is greater than oneself.” I am just very humbled and honored that Hiroshi trusts that I am the right person for his film. It is an exciting moment of realization.

a’Ali: You got me there; I am a bit of a workaholic I am told, but I am working at trying to balance personal life a little bit more. A good friend Michael Knight likes to say “after reading three thousand books do you think you could like take a trip to the mall?” No seriously Hana, he used to come to my house and tell me it’s time to go to the mall and see what’s about. Hysterical huh, I have missed several premieres to films in which I had lead or principle roles. However, I won’t do that anymore. My screenwriting and producing partner, Nicole, has admonished me a plenty on that one. Seriously, though it is important
to balance and I am determined to make a better effort at it.
Hana: a’Ali drifts away for a very suspended moment. It could be the early morning hours in which he agreed to take my interview. Or perhaps the effects of a long day of leading the business technology retreat for Exosystems Technologies. He is a founding partner and board member. Yes, a workaholic indeed.
I observed for a while before gently interrupting his thoughts. I asked him where he was…he apologizes for what he calls ‘Xooming’ pronounced like Zooming. He tells me that he has always been a bit strange like that. Leaning forward he says:a’Ali: I like to go down where the indigent and homeless frequent and live. I learn a lot just being with them and speaking with them. Sad how many days we just walk by like these people don’t even exist...I really love to travel…the problem is I find a project on the way. I don’t know… perhaps something will come up to distract me… Did I even answer your question?
You’ve shown an incredible amount of commitment to your career. What do you want to be remembered for?
a’Ali: I hope when all is said and done; that my children will know how much I love them and it helps them in life. I hope the good outweighs my errors in life. I hope that the people dearest to me will have a smile in their heart when they find my spirit near.
Hana: a'Ali, just one more question considering the hour; Charnele Brown former star of Bill Cosby’s “A Different World” and other feature films; and the founder of Triwen Productions and Charnele Brown Acting School in Houston, Texas; she had this to say about you.
“Love at first sight, he is God’s child. I was blown away by his talent. He is simply Amazing. People love him for his work and not appearance alone; he‘ll have longevity in his career because of this.”
Is that true a’Ali’? If ever an ebony man could blush, he did and remained in austere silence. As, I completed this article an interesting telephone call came from Michael who I had spoken to previously and perhaps his words are best to conclude this inspiring story.
“In my experience with him a’Ali exemplified to me as any Christian should be, we should want for others what we want for ourselves. a’Ali was the first person I met that has ever shown this and meant it. I knew I had to work with him. Something better happened – friendship.” Michael McCauley

was a consistent force of confidence and peace.
He stressed how important it was for him to be mindful of God’s timing, when things seemed to slow tremendously, or halt altogether. “Each one of us has a time when the world will be ready for we have to offer,” said Franklin, ”however people have to submit themselves to the process and time that it takes. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, all those years to lay the foundation, it’s not when it’s about committing to the now,” Said Franklin.
Franklin wisely cautioned the participants to be keenly aware of their spiritual compass despite both challenges and opportunities that may come their way. “What do you want, and why do you want it? If you don’t know the why, you will compromise the how. I run into people all the time that say, ‘I want to be an actor, producer or director, and there is no problem with that, but if you [must] have the understanding of why you’re pursuing this career”, said Franklin.
Franklin reminded the participants how being true to self- which for him meant never losing sight of his Christianity was a part of the foundation for his success. “My faith gives me a competitive advantage to really help people,” Franklin says. For some, the “evils” of the film industry seem incompatible with a Christian lifestyle.”
His new book, entitled “Produced by Faith, uses film as an analogy to help people look at their lives as a movie. This industry is ultimately about telling stories, whether it’s in front or behind the camera. It’s about putting in the world a story that may touch somebody.”
Franklin’s story is certainly a storied tale and one of excited anticipation at what his future – and his faith – holds for him.

Springing into Good HealthBy: Laura Ali, MS, RD, LDN
With spring upon us, it is a great
time to clean the house, clear out
the flowerbeds and get your plate in
shape! Taking the time to evaluate
the foods you put on your plate,
and in your mouth, is a first step to
getting on track for better health.
A 2011 survey by the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics found that
while 89% of Americans felt diet
and nutrition were very important,
less than half really felt they were
doing all they could to eat well for
their health. Here are a few ways to
help you keep your plate in shape
through the spring months.

• BLOOMING WITH COLOR: Spring is a great time to add vibrantly colored fruits and veggies to your diet. Fill half your plate with fruits and veggies to get the benefit of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber – nutrients you need to be healthy.
• GREEN IS GREAT: Mom was right; you should eat those leafy green vegetables! Asparagus, baby spinach and peas are in season and good sources of fiber, Vitamin C and foliate. Add them to salads, mix them in with couscous or risotto, or eat them lightly steamed with a twist of lemon.
• BRIGHTEN ANY MEAL: Add a splash of yellow/orange color with apricots and mangos. These fruits are perfect additions to salsas and salads and add a punch of flavor plus V vitamin A and C to grilled chicken or fish.
• JAZZ IT UP: Vibrant reds and blues are loaded with antioxidants and make any meal more interesting. Add red peppers, red cabbage or purple potatoes to your dinner plate and throw strawberries or blueberries into your cereal or salad for a sweet addition.
• LIGHTEN UP: While often thought of as the main part of the meal, proteins should fill one quarter of your plate. Chicken and lean beef tend to be staples, but mixing it up with seafood, lean pork, eggs and dried beans help make meals interesting while giving a nutritional boost.
• EAT SEAFOOD AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK: Keep a bag of frozen shrimp in your freezer and add them to soup or stir-fries. Use canned or no-mess pouches of tuna or salmon to make fish cakes in place of burgers. Keep a pouch of single serve StarKist Creations® in your pantry or desk drawer for a quick lunch when you are on the go.
• GO MEATLESS ONCE A WEEK: Focus on dried beans and peas as a high fiber alternative. Try a bean soup for lunch,
rice and beans for dinner or add a can of white beans to tomato sauce in place of ground beef.
• PUMP UP YOUR SALADS: If you are having a salad for lunch or as a side for dinner, mix in some healthy nuts like walnuts or pistachios for a nutty crunch, protein boost and the added benefit of healthy fats.
Try this springtime risotto and get the benefits of seafood and spring vegetables with a zesty lemon flavor.

clarity in this season is great and if you are not clear about the word that God has given you wait for Him to make it clear.
Fifth and last is to expect God to increase you with a deeper understanding of who He is. God’s greatest desire is that we know who He is and move in the gifts of the spirit. God is doing some amazing things in the lives of His children and if we will seek first His kingdom and righteous ways of being a Christian, God will surely do His part. He is the author of our faith. So trusting God should not be extraordinary, it should be normal. He is the same yesterday and forever. He is ready and willing to take you to new levels in Him. Are you ready? And are you willing to be what He has called you to do in this new season of your life?
Cultivate your God given gifts for your ministry, family and spiritual understanding that God is about to release in your life. God is always on time and so if we miss Him at His appointed time then we will be forced to have delays in our lives that we don’t want. We suffer because we have a lack of knowledge of the word of God! I know that when God is moving it is most important to have the wisdom to be prepared to go where God says, and to do what the Lord would have you to do!! You won’t be disappointed and you won’t be sorry!
5 Steps To Cleaning Your Spiritual Closest (Continued...)In order to have success in any area of life, consistence and
commitment are imperative qualities. What I am about to espouse may sound like an oxymoron, but it is not. One
of the most important areas to consistency and commitment is the context of change. Change affects every aspect of our lives from our physical bodies, relationships, job assignments, society, communication, and faith. Every change process in our personal or professional lives will DEMAND commitment and consistency in order to be actualized.
Change is not a favorite plan for most people. It causes resistance and anxiety for many. It is estimated about 10% of people in the world are change lovers (yours truly is one). They are better known as change agents and catalysts. Change agents see change as positive, progressive and part of the means to a new end. Nothing can spur anxiety and unrest like the need for a real change in our lives. One reason for the unrest is the inability to predict unanticipated consequences of the change. In this virtual age, having an understanding and awareness of change cannot be ignored. Information and the change of it are constantly accessible to us by the World Wide Web. As a result, we are more aware of change trends. Life itself is lived in seasons and seasons represent lots of change and flow. Times come in our lives when we realize that perhaps
we have been too rigid relationally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. One of the great blessings in life and leading is the ability to learn, modify and change. As a result, change should be recognized as strategic and necessary to move from one place to another, no matter the venue.
36 WISEMAGAZINE.ORG \ APRIL - JUNE 2013
In the leadership context, many change models exists. Some focus on organizational needs for change while others focus on individual and team needs for change. One such model is ADKAR and it is very applicable to personal and professional change needs. This model was first introduced by Prosci (1998) which is a company specializing in change management. It is not complicated and requires proactive moves for success. Change must be accompanied with movement towards it. ADKAR is an acrostic tool that stands for the following:
A: AWARENESS D: DESIRE K: KNOWLEDGE A: ABILITY R: REINFORCEMENT
Awareness addresses establishing why the change must occur. Real change commences in a thought
life. Awareness gives you the nudge that something is “wrong”. Without awareness, the understanding of the need for newness can not be respected. It is never beneficial to walk in denial when the results are observable and undesirable.
Desire must follow the awareness for change. A person must have a deep hope to change. Often, the consequences of behavior will lead the desire for change. Desire is required to rev high motivation levels required to be committed to the process. Desire fuels the patience needed to walk through the change process.
Knowledge is pivotal to establish what the change looks like so it is visual and tangible. We need to have the vision of what the new context looks like.
Ability to act is based on the knowledge you have about the change. Ability is the active part to walk out the new process. Sometimes in personal scenarios, associations and relationships can be

altered or terminated. In companies, staff may be reassigned around the organization.
Reinforcement and support is needed for change to stick. What will keep the new initiative in place? What will drive the committed consistency to walk in the success of the change? It is mandatory to celebrate the WINS of the change even small ones. Whatever you celebrate a reward will be reinforced. So do it frequently!!! Change presents such a challenge for most, it is always appropriate to give any strides toward it attention.
So take a minute to ponder an area that needs to change in your life. You are the only person who can change you. Please reflect introspectively. Chances are you will have more than one, but be patient and address one area at a time. Take each area through the ADKAR process and watch needed change ensue. Remember, change is a PROCESS and will require consistency and commitment.

possess as part of the tapestry of God’s wisdom. Their individuality is inseparable from the role they perform in God’s kingdom. 1) How did you get where you are today?I am where I am today mainly because of the unconditional-ish :) love of a single mother who broke many, many cycles of sin, dysfunction and abuse. Even though she struggled her entire life and wasn’t perfect, she got the most important thing right…she taught me that God really and truly loved me and so did she. The things she messed up, God has personally walked me through healing those wounds.
2) What are you most passionate about? I am probably MOST passionate about showing people that they are loved, special, amazing and giving them the hope I so desperately lacked as a child. This all plays into why I do what I do. I absolutely LOVE watching people come to the realization that they are not destined to be sick and diseased. That living a long and healthy life is so within the realm of possibility for them!3) If you could do anything what would it be? Um wow! There really isn’t enough space in this magazine for this! What pops into my mind first is what Jesus did. If I could touch anyone suffering with any illness or disease whether physical or otherwise and they would be healed. on the spot!! Yep! That about sums it up!

strength to continue pursuing the vision He put in my heart over 15 years ago, even when it looked like the vision had completely died. I can never thank Him enough for the privilege of serving Him by working with single pregnant women who need hope and help.
2. What am I most passionate about? I am most passionate about truth. It is the truth that makes us free. I am passionate about the application of truth in lives that transforms the lost and struggling heart into an individual that is free, full of joy and fulfilling their purpose. When I see that in any life, I rejoice. If I have had an opportunity to be a part of that process it takes me over the top!
3. If you could do anything what would it be?
The quick answer to that is that I think I am doing it. When God puts a vision in your heart and then helps you see that vision fulfilled there is nothing better. The longer answer would be I would like to establish more Mercy Houses. I would like to create a model for others to follow, that would allow the residential home model we use to be replicated in other cities, all over the country. Bottom line I would like to see abortion ended because there are so many options for life that no woman ever feels compelled to have an abortion due to a lack of support.

All over the world Catholics are celebrating the choice of Pope Francis as the new leader of the Catholic Church. There was much
media speculation as to why the cardinals had a secret ballot and why they were in seclusion for the selection process. As this process unfolded some people may have wondered, "What are the attributes of a good Christian leader?" It is a question important to any faith and one that should be explored.
One general definition of a leader is "A person who influences a group of people toward the achievement of a goal."* How does this definition differ from a Christian
leader; or should the definition and characteristics be the same?
In addition to the above definition, we would expect Christian leaders to be lead by the Holy Spirit. It is a role that requires spiritual commitment, confidence, humility, focus and faith in God to direct them. The individuals chosen for leadership must be Godly examples, striving daily to grow stronger but willing to openly confess mistakes. They must always walk in a way that would make those they come in contact with desire to become a servant of and worker in God`s kingdom. The Role of a Christian leader also requires fervent (intense, ceaseless) prayer and studying of God`s Word. Scriptures on leadership include; Acts 20:28,
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP By Linda Williams

Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Peter 3:8, 1 Peter 5:1-3.
Christian Leadership is not exclusive to a pastor, pope or rabbi. These individuals have been ordained by God to be a Sheppard of His people. Ephesians 4:11-12 states, "And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (KJV). These are all positions of leadership in the kingdom of God, and require individuals in these positions to behave in a Christ-like manner.
If you are in a Christian Leadership role, some of the following tips may be of assistance to you:
• Follow the rules for order and decency in your
place of worship (1 Corinthians 14:40). This is a simple scripture in theory but difficult in practice.
• All leaders must be on time for all meetings, events, services and every aspect of life. Make it a habit (1 Corinthians 14:40)!
• Leaders should be involved in planning of church events to make sure church protocol is followed (1 Corinthians 14:40).
• A leader must be trustworthy. There is no place for gossips in leadership (1 Timothy 6:20).
• A leader must be willing to follow God`s direction (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
• A leader must have Godly mannerisms in their behavior, attitude, attire and relationships(Galatians 5:22, 23).
• A leader must be about excellence for God not self (1 Peter 5:1-3).
Leaders unconsciously set the tone for the individuals they lead. Before you decide to accept a leadership position in your church or ministries consider Noah, Moses, Joshua, Deborah and Jesus. What made these persons great leaders in God`s eyes? Let us not look to be Christian leaders for the recognition that it gives us, but because our obedience gives Recognition to God. Let God`s light shine through you to lead others to Him (Matthew 5:16).________________________________________Linda J. WISE POETRY
Ever since I was a little girl, I was somewhat shy
My feelings would hurt easily so I would always cry
I couldn’t stand up for myself, I didn’t know how to
No matter how hard I tried it was something I couldn’t do
As I got older my problem got worse
I would put other people’s feelings first
This was definitely a huge weakness
So I prayed because I wanted to fix this
But then one day reality set in
And I was betrayed by one of my closest kin
So I told them how I felt and held my own
I was to be taken seriously was the sound of my tone
I was called crazy but yet I stood firm
And with every story there is a lesson to learn
Sometimes we don’t know what we are capable of
Be committed and have faith; give it to the Lord above
For God is the greatest love I’ve ever known
He helped me to find my strength unknown
