We all know many winter sport disciplines and have
seen them on TV. We may even have tried a few of them.
But the Winter Games exhibition is probably the only
opportunity you’ll ever get to try this wide a range of
Olympic winter sports and learn what it takes to achieve
great results in each of them. Winter Games invites you
to actively engage yourself in a number of disciplines
and the science behind them.
WinterGamesHeurekaJoy of Discovery!
Be an athlete. Test yourself. Push the limits of your
comfort zone in a safe environment. Compete and
cooperate with other athletes. Explore the science
behind each sport.
Winter Games exhibition is a Nordic coproduction of
Experimentarium, Copenhagen, Denmark VilVite, Bergen
Vitensenter AS, Norway Tekniska Museet, Stockholm,
Sweden and Heureka, the Finnish Science Centre Finland.

WS10 Ski JumpingPlace yourself on the footprints. Be ready for
jumping. Jump up as high as you can exactly
when you reach the end of the slope. On the
screen you can see the length of your ski jump.
WS21 Curling You start by setting the curling stone rotating
a little. If the stone rotates anticlockwise, it will
curl to the left. If the stone rotates clockwise, it
will curl to the right.
WS22 Curling stone and brush Sweeping with a curling broom warms the
ice and allows a thin film of moisture to form
between the ice and stone.
Curling stones weigh 18.5 kg. All stones must
have the same temperature as the ice, -4.5° C.

WS30 Try slalomIn a downhill race the speed during the corners
reaches 80 km/h and on downhill slopes the
maximum speed is 145 km/h. A typical slalom
run takes about one minute. You can try it here!
WS31 Try Hahnenkamm! The legendary downhill race Hahnenkammren-
nen in Kitzbühel has a passage, where the incli-
nation of the slope is 40.4 degrees. The slope is
called the mousetrap.
Can you reach the top?
WS32 Downhill simulator Speed skiing is an extreme form of skiing,
where the goal is to ski as fast as possible down
a hill. The world record for men is 251 km/h and
women’s record is 242 km/h.
What’s your record?
WS40 Can you score in ice hockey? The slapshot is the hardest shot in ice hockey.
A good stroke can get the puck flying off at a
speed of 180 km/h. But the slap shot is also an
uncertain shot – both the shovel shot and the
wrist shot give greater accuracy. The situation
determines which shot to choose!

WS56 Optimize your skiSki waxingThe construction of the ski in combination with
your weight decides the camber of the ski. This
influences the zones where glide and grip wax are
to be applied.
Grip waxGrip wax should be soft enough to allow snow
crystals to get stuck on it when this part of the ski is
pressed against the snow.
Glide waxThe sole purpose of glide wax is to provide low
friction. The ski should slide as easily as possible.
WS60 Snowboard Try snowboard movements.
Move the board to the sides with the help of
your foot placed closest to the front of the
board.
WS51 Biathlon Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing
and shooting. You have to be both fast and a
good shot to win! If you miss the target, you are
given a time penalty or have to take a penalty
loop. To become a good biathlete, you must be
good at multi-tasking. A minor mistake can have
big consequences.
WS70 Bobsleigh track Bobsleigh is one of the most terrifying winter
sport disciplines. It’s a sled with runners,
enclosed in a fiber glass casing. The bobsleigh
shoots along at speeds of around 130 km/h on a
specially built track cast in concrete. The run is
over in less than a minute.
Good luck!
