Preface
What is Virtual Terminal 2?
Virtual Terminal 2 is the second generation of the Virtual Terminal application. Completely redeveloped,
Virtual Terminal 2 (VT2) features many improvements over the original Virtual Terminal, including an
updated graphical interface, integrated security, and an optimized code base.
VT2 is a software application that can be used to process transaction information to WinEPS or
ServerEPS, similar to a POS system. VT2 finds wide use in both company POS laboratories and in live
store environments.
In stores, VT2 is primarily used to perform transactions that the POS installed in a store cannot. Such
transactions may include the following:
Credit Force (Voice Authorization)
EBT Voucher
EBT Foodstamp Voucher
EBT Foodstamp Return
Gift Card Activation
Gift Card De-Activation
Gift Card Recharge
Phone Card Activation
Phone Card De-Activation
VT2 is not limited to the transaction types listed above, and can run any transaction that WinEPS
supports. Additionally, Virtual Terminal 2 supports all hardware terminals that WinEPS supports.
Terminals can be attached to a PC COM port via an RS232 cable.
VT2 can be installed on any PC that matches the system requirements, and has a network connection to
the WinEPS server or to ServerEPS. VT2 does not need to be installed directly on the WinEPS server
when in use with WinEPS.

Virtual Terminal 2 Installation
System Requirements
If the minimum requirements for the operating system you are using are higher than what is listed below,
use those requirements instead.
Hardware Requirements for Virtual Terminal
Pentium III (Intel or compatible) 500 MHz processor (1 GHz or faster recommended)
256 MB of RAM (512 MB or more recommended)
VGA, or higher, resolution monitor set at 1024x768 or better
CD-ROM drive for software installation
Ethernet Card
Drive Space Requirement for OpenEPS & Virtual Terminal:
100 Mb free drive space for configuration files and logs
A windows supported printer (to print receipts)
Software Requirements for Virtual Terminal
Always use the latest service pack or certified patch for the operating system that is in use.
TCP/IP Protocol
Any of the following Operating Systems:
Windows 7, 32 or 64 bit
Microsoft Vista SP1
Windows Server 2008, 32 or 64 bit
Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Professional
Microsoft Server 2003 SP 1
PCI Requires the latest Operating System patches be installed in a timely fashion. The requirements
listed above reflect only the minimum requirements under which the software will run. It is always
recommended that the latest patches or service pack be installed for whatever operating system is in use.
See the PCI Compliance and Operating Systems section in the WinEPS User’s Guide for additional
information.
User Rights Requirements
Virtual Terminal 2 requires the ability to write configuration files to its installation directory (\Program
Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS). To do this, all Windows users that VT2 runs under must have permissions to
write to the default directory.

If the user does not have the appropriate rights, Virtual Terminal 2 will not be able to download
configuration information from WinEPS, and will fail to function, or will function improperly.
PCI Compliance and Operating Systems
PCI requires that the security patches for software in the payments environment be tested and installed in
a timely fashion. Several Microsoft operating systems have past their supported security update lifespan,
and no additional security patches will be released. These operating systems include Windows NT 4.0
and Windows 95/98.
Due to the vulnerability that a lack of security patches represents, these operating systems are no longer
supported for use with the WinEPS/OpenEPS product suite. Only the operating systems listed under the
Software Requirements section above are supported.

end of support dates for all Microsoft operating systems.
Installation
Note:
Installation of Virtual Terminal in a ServerEPS environment should come before installation of the OpenEPS package.
To install Virtual Terminal 2, follow the steps below:
1. The Virtual Terminal installation package is available via the Retalix FTP site (ftp://ftp.mtxeps.com/), or from the WinEPS installation disk.
Contact Retalix to get login information for the FTP site.
2. On the FTP site the installation package is located in the /WinEPS Installs/Virtual Terminal/ directory.
3. On the WinEPS installation CD, virtual terminal is located in the \Virtual Terminal 2\ directory.
4. Copy the Virtual Terminal XXX.X.exe (where XXX.X is the latest version number) onto the windows PC on which you which to run VT
5. Double click on the Install exe file to begin installation.
Note:
The Virtual Terminal 2 Installation is ‘Packaged for the Web’. It is a single file that contains all VT2 installation information, and can be used to install VT2 over a network.

Starting VT2 Installation
6. After starting the installation, several screens will prompt you for further information.
7. Read the License Agreement, and click yes to continue.

8. Select the destination drive from the drives listed. This is not a path selection screen; the Virtual Terminal 2 installation will use a default path of \Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS. Virtual terminal must be run from this directory, so there is no option to change this path.

9. Enter the IP address of the WinEPS server. If you are installing VT2 on the same server that WinEPS is installed on, you may accept the defaults. The default port is also listed, but this should only be changed if the port conflicts with an application already running on your network. Consult your network support personnel if you experience a conflict.
10. 1Virtual Terminal 2 will finish out the installation process.
11. If you are installing Virtual terminal in a ServerEPS environment, be sure to proceed on with the installation of the OpenEPS package as outlined in the ServerEPS Installation and Configuration Guide.
Update DEP Settings
In Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7, the Window Data Execution Prevention is defaulted to on for all
programs. The update to the use of SOAP for file transfer requires that POS systems using OpenEPS be
excluded from DEP. If your POS system or Virtual Terminal is running one of these OS versions, or if the
POS is running on Windows XP with the DEP turned on, it is required to add the POS executable to the
DEP exclusion list.
This commonly applies when running Virtual Terminal on a Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 PC.
To modify the DEP settings use the following instructions:
1. On Windows 7/Server 2008, Go to start/windows logo, right click Computer and select Properties. On Windows XP, Right click My Computer, choose Properties.

2. On Windows 7/Server 2008, Click on Advanced system setting on the left side of the screen under Control Panel Home.
3. Go to the Advanced tab and click the Settings button under Performance, then select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
4. If the DEP is set to the first radio button, where it is turned on ly for Windows programs and services, you do not need to make any changes.
5. If it turned on for all programs and servers as shown above, click the Add button.
6. Use the opened selection box to select your POS executable; if using Virtual Terminal, this is located by default in the C:\Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS\ folder: Select the VT2.exe file.

7. Click Open and the POS system executable will appear in the DEP exception list.
8. Restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

WinEPS Setup
If you are installing Virtual Terminal in a WinEPS environment, follow the steps in this section to
configuration WinEPS; if you are utilizing ServerEPS, move to the next Chapter.
The WinEPS Setup section will detail the basic WinEPS setup for Virtual Terminal 2 and include the most
common options.
WinEPS Configuration
A WinEPS lane and terminal configuration profile must be assigned to Virtual Terminal 2 just like a
standard POS system. This section assumes that WinEPS has already been set up and configured for
regular POS use.
Follow the steps below to set up the Virtual Terminal 2 in WinEPS:
9. Open the WinEPS GUI, and Log in.
10. Go to Configuration | Terminal Configuration > OpenEPS Lanes

11. The default list of XML files contains Virtual Terminal.XML. Select this configuration.
12. From the list of Allowed Transactions, turn on only the transaction types that Virtual Terminal 2 will be processing. Though VT2 supports all transaction types that WinEPS can process, it is often a good idea to limit the available types to only those that the POS system is not equipped to handle.
13. Once the transaction types have been selected, verify that there is a host defined for each one that VT2 is to process.
14. To change the hosts selected, click Change Host Selection, and use the Dropdown list to select a host.

Warning:
This list of hosts is universal, so do not remove a host if your POS system uses it. For example, even if VT2 is not doing Credit, there will probably be a host defined for credit because it is highly likely your POS system takes credit transactions.
15. When finished selecting hosts, click the Save Host Selection button, and verify the host settings.
16. Click the Save and Close button after verifying the host configurations are correct. This will return you to the terminal configuration screen.
17. If Virtual Terminal 2 is to be set up with a customer terminal, then click the Pin Pad Configuration Tab.
Note:
Virtual Terminal 2 can be used without a Pin Pad attached, if none of the selected transaction types require PIN entry. Without a Pin Pad, all card numbers must be entered manually.

18. Select the terminal to use from the drop down list.
19. Select the terminal to use from the drop down list.
20. Enter the Com port on the computer that the terminal is to be attached to.
21. Set the terminal tender buttons:
If the selected terminal has keys, drag and drop desired transaction types from the Unassigned Tender Types box to the buttons on the selected terminal.
If the selected terminal is a touch screen terminal that utilizes screen files, use the drop down menus to select the buttons you want to display.
22. Select Save to save the changes, and exit to the main screen.
23. Go to Site Information | Lane Definition

24. A lane for Virtual Terminal 2 needs to be set up.
25. Click Add to add a lane for Virtual Terminal 2.
26. Select the lane number that Virtual Terminal will use (from 1 to 99). Generally VT is either given a number close to those used for the service desk, or VT is given a number like 98 or 99 as those lanes numbers are rarely used by POS systems.
27. After selecting the lane number, verify the Terminal Type is set to 04 - OpenEPS TCP/IP. This is the default setting. The terminal Type must be set to 04 before you can select the XML Configuration File Name.

28. Now that the terminal type is set, the Select button will appear next to the Configuration File Name box. Click Select.
29. Use the file list to select the Virtual Terminal.xml.
30. The other settings should be left at default. Click Save to exit.
31. Go to Site Information | Receipt Information

32. The Receipt Information & Deposit Info screen will appear. This screen is used to configure the header and footer information for both Virtual Terminal 2 printed receipts as well as any signature or receipt capture performed through Virtual Terminal.
To edit the receipt header or footer, just highlight the line and enter new text. Selecting the whole line will allow entered text to overwrite.
The center section displays a proxy from the expected purchase and total information and may not be edited.
The text will be formatted as Left or Right Justified, or Centered, depending on the selections made in the Receipt Header and Receipt Message (Footer) boxes.
The Bank Deposit info is not used by Virtual Terminal 2.
33. Click Save to save your changes.
34. It is necessary to Stop and Start WinEPS to implement your changes. Use the Stop button on the front of the screen to stop WinEPS.

35. After WinEPS stops, use the Start Button to restart WinEPS.
The WinEPS setup of VT2 is finished.
Note:
Even if set up to process in Stand In at the POST mode, Virtual Terminal 2 must sign on to WinEPS successfully at least once to acquire the receipt header and footer information.

ServerEPS Setup
If you are installing Virtual Terminal in a ServerEPS environment, follow the steps in this section to
configuration WinEPS; if you are utilizing WinEPS, refer to the previous Chapter for setup information.
The ServerEPS Setup section will detail the basic WinEPS setup for Virtual Terminal 2 and include the
most common options.

ServerEPS Configuration
A lane and terminal configuration profile must be assigned to Virtual Terminal 2 just like a standard POS
system. This section assumes that you already an active user on the ServerEPS web services GUI
interface and can log in.
Follow the steps below to set up the Virtual Terminal 2 with ServerEPS:
1. Use your web browser to go to WWW.ServerEPS.Com
2. Click the Web Services button and sign into the Web Services using your Username, Company number, and Password.

3. Once you have logged in, select the Config Management Option from the Navigation Menu on the left side.
4. Click the ‘launch’ link at the top of the page. This will launch the Configuration Management GUI.
5. On the Configuration Management GUI, use your same Username, Company number, and Password to sign in.

6. Click the Lane tab and review the listing of available terminal configurations. If one has already been created for use with Virtual Terminal, you may select that, or you may create a new configuration by selecting the New button at the top, and then select Lane Configuration from the dropdown.
Make sure to note the name of the configuration file you are opening or creating so that you may select it later when defining the Virtual Terminal Lane.
7. Once the configuration has been opened or created, you will be brought to the initial Integrated Terminal Configuration screen.

Though VT2 supports all transaction types that WinEPS can process, it is often a good idea to limit the available types to only those that the POS system is not equipped to handle.

16. If a lane is not already defined for Virtual Terminal, you may define one by entering a lane number in the Lane number box (from 1 to 99). Generally VT is either given a number close to those used for the service desk, or VT is given a number like 98 or 99 as those lanes numbers are rarely used by POS systems.
17. Lane Type should remain at the default of ‘Normal’.
18. Use the Lane Configuration drop down to select the terminal configuration you updated in the previous section.
19. Click the Update / Insert button to assign the lane.
20. Click the Receipt Information option at the lower left to move to the receipt page.
21. The Receipt Information & Deposit Info screen will appear. This screen is used to configure the header and footer information for both Virtual Terminal 2 printed receipts as well as any signature or receipt capture performed through Virtual Terminal.

Using Virtual Terminal 2
The Virtual Terminal 2 GUI
This section details the different aspects of the Virtual Terminal 2 GUI, and gives information about how
to set up specific configuration options.
The Virtual Terminal 2 GUI is divided up into 3 parts: The top portions, which includes the cashier display,
the central section which displays options and instructions, and the bottom button bar, which allows
option selection.
In Virtual Terminal 2, options may be selected by either using the mouse to point and click on the desired
option, or by using an associated number key or function key. In the screenshot below, the F9 key may
be pressed to sign on, or the mouse can be used to click the ‘Sign On’ button on the button bar.

Item Description
Cashier ID & Lane Number This section displays the current Cashier ID for the cashier that is
logged on, and the Lane Number that VT2 signed on with.
Mode
Normal – Standard operation; indicates transactions will be processed
normally.
Training – Training mode sets a flag in each transaction to let WinEPS
know the transaction is a training transaction. Training transactions are
not sent to the host, so no charges are actually made.
Warning: Do not leave VT2 in training mode, and always check to
verify that VT2 is not in training mode when performing real financial
transactions.
QA – Testing mode. This mode is activated through the use of the –qa
command line option. Provides additional information on the
processing state and the function calls being made.
Cashier Display
This section displays the WinEPS cashier messages. The text that
shows up here can be configured in WinEPS. To configure the text,
open WinEPS and go to Configuration | Terminal Configuration >
OpenEPS lanes, and choose the configuration file in use (likely the
Virtual Terminal.XML file), and go to the Transaction Sequence Tab.
VT2 Version This is the version of the VT2.Exe executable.
POS Version & EPS Version
(OpenEPS DLL Version)
The POS version is the version number of the MTX_POS.DLL file.
The EPS version is the version number of the MTX_EPS.DLL file.
These files are collectively known as OpenEPS.

Middle Section – Main Display
The middle section of the screen details the current actions required by the cashier, or provides options or
information on the state of the transaction.
When options appear on the screen, such as the tender types shown above, they are often numbered.
The numbering allows the cashier to select the option without requiring the use of the mouse. In the
screenshot above, if the cashier pressed the ‘1’ button, they would select Debit as the tender type.
Bottom Section – Button Bar
The bottom section displays the function keys with their associated option button. If a button is not shown,
it is not selectable on the screen you are currently on.
Button Bar – All Possible Buttons displayed
The buttons are associated with the function keys by their Key Binding. The key binding setup can be
reached by selecting the Config button. See the VT2 Configurations Setup section below for complete
information on setting up key bindings.

This button opens up the VT2 configuration menu. This menus is
used to change VT2 options, including what function keys are
bound to which buttons.

This button brings up a list of cashier utilities, including receipt
reprinting and transaction voids.
Manual
F5
This button causes the transaction to process as a manual
transaction, prompting the cashier to enter card information
manually, instead of reading the card through an attached
terminal.
Prior Page F7 Displays previous page of options, if one exists.
Next Page F8 Displays following page of options, if one exists.
OK F9
This button confirms the selection the cashier has just made; it is
often used in verifying when a transaction is canceled.
Cancel
F11
Initiates the canceling of the current transaction; the cashier will
then be asked if they want to cancel, and if confirmed, the
transaction will be canceled and reset.
Sign-Off F12
Used to sign off VT2; this option returns the checker to the sign
on screen.

Bottom Section – Button Bar
On each screen the Enter button will execute the default action for that screen. This option is typically the
most common option on the screen, such as selecting OK after entering requested data (dollar amounts,
card number, etc). The default action is generally indicated by the on-screen text.
The user may use the TAB button to move through the selectable options on the screen, and then may
press Enter to execute the highlighted option.

Terminal Closed Screen
This is an example of the first screen seen when Virtual Terminal 2 is started, but not signed on yet. From
the Terminal closed screen, the user can Sign On to VT2 or Configure VT2.
Configuration Button
This button allows the customization of Virtual Terminal 2. Clicking the Configuration button will bring up a
password entry field. The password can be acquired by contacting Retalix Support.

Configuration Menu:

Key Bindings
List of current keys and what function they are bound to.
You may change the key by clicking on the value, and entering a new
Function Key value.
Display Size
Maximized – VT2 Starts as a maximized window.
Normal – VT2 starts as an 800 by 600 window.
Kiosk – VT2 starts in full screen mode where the windows desktop cannot
be seen.
Receipt Printing Options
Printer Setup button allows the selection of what printer VT2 will print to.
Virtual Terminal 2 uses the selected printer to print out receipt information. If
the printer is not available, no receipt will print. Additionally, the receipt
header and footers should previously be set up in WinEPS. Refer to the
VT2 Receipt Header/Footer Setup section for details.
Print Receipt:
Preview – allows viewing the receipts before deciding to print them. The
default is Preview.
Always – Always prints the receipts for a transaction, without displaying the
receipt to the cashier.
Cashier Display: Mode
Determines the number of lines displayed.
5 lines of 40 characters: Also know as the Extended Cashier Prompts.
Corresponds to the 5X40 display in the WinEPS Terminal Configuration,
Transaction Sequence Tab.
2 Lines of 16 characters: Also known as the Standard Prompts.
Corresponds to the 2X16 display in the WinEPS Terminal Configuration,

signature will be displayed on Virtual Terminal for the cashier to verify.

This setting is for use with MagTek Mini MICR wedge check readers,
allowing the reader to pass Raw MICR data to VT2 for check transactions.

Display Velocity Data
Checking this option will display velocity decline information for (check)
transactions that receive a velocity-based decline from the host.

Print Velocity Data
When this option is checked a “Print” button will be displayed on the velocity
display screen. Clicking this button will print the velocity information to the
configured printer.

Display “Card Not Present”
If this option is selected, a “Credit Card Not Present” button will be
displayed on the tender selection screen. This button will replace the
standard credit button.
The Card Not Present button that will automatically set the Manual flag
without requiring a cashier to complete the additional step of hitting F5 on
the VT screen or 0 on the terminal. However, as this button replaces the
regular credit button, it is recommended that this option be used only in
conjunction with the Generic EFT option (found on the Engine tab).
Please contact the MTX sales department if you are interested in this
functionality but not in using the Generic EFT option.
Misc
Display Customer Name
on main screen
Checking this option will display the customer name read in from the card
swipe, if a name is available. The customer name will be displayed at the
top left of the VT screen in the Mode section.
Allow Pre-Authorizations If this option is checked, the Pre-Authorization transaction type will be
available for Credit, Debit and Gift Cards.
Disable Voids When this option is checked, Virtual Terminal will disable voids. The Void
button will no longer be available on screen.

Engine Options
When these options are check on, they have the following effects:
Use Generic EFT – Displays a Generic EFT button as the first tender type
option; generic EFT is used to allow the customer terminal to determine
what payment is used.
Training Mode – VT will set a Training Mode flag for each transaction.
WinEPS will answer all training transaction with a false ‘Approval’ and will
NOT send the transaction onto the host for approval or financial processing.
Amount Change Allowed – When checked, VT2 will accept an ‘approved for
a lesser amount’ response from the host; commonly for gift cards, a host
may return an amount lower than the selected payment amount as the
approved amount , indicating the remaining balance on the card that has
been used.
Use Default Check Type – This option will display the Default Check Type
box. When checked the selected check type will be used for all check
transactions and the cashier will no longer be prompted for the check type.

If this box is checked, the lane number box on the right will become active
and allow the selection of a lane number. The selected lane number will be
used any time this VT2 signs on, and VT2 will no longer prompt or allow the
cashier to enter a lane number.

Engine Tab Item Description
Multi-Store Functionality
For use with the ServerEPS, OpenEPS Direct payments solution only.
The Multi-Store Functionality checkbox allows Virtual Terminal to log on as
a lane from the store specified during sign on. When this option is not
checked Virtual Terminal uses the store number specified in the original
installation and stored in the windows registry.
When this option is checked, a Store Number Option box will become
available during the VT sign on process:
The store number may be entered by typing in the box, or may be selected
from the dropdown box. The dropdown box is populated from the list of
store numbers contained in the VT2Stores.txt file:
The VT2Stores.txt must be manually created by the user. Once created it
must be placed into the \Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS directory that
contains the Virtual Terminal application (VT2.exe).
This option does not allow the configuration of the Company Number; the
company number will still be drawn from the PC registry. As such, this Multi-
Store option can only be used to sign on to different stores within the same
company.

Signing on to VT2
To use Virtual Terminal 2, it is required that a cashier first sign on.
From the terminal closed screen, click the Sign-On button or press F9.
This will bring up the Cashier Sign On screen.
Lane Number and Cashier ID Entry
On the Cashier Sign On screen, the user can enter the Cashier ID and Lane Number to use with VT2.
Once signed on, the Cashier ID and Lane number are displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
Currently, VT2 will accept any Cashier ID entered. Commonly a Cashier ID or Cashier Number is
assigned to each checker by store managers; it is recommended that cashiers use their assigned number
when logging into VT2.

The available lane numbers are 1 through 99, where the lane number entered should match the lane
number for the Virtual Terminal lane in WinEPS.
Once Cashier ID and Lane Number have been entered, Virtual Terminal 2 will contact WinEPS and
download the latest configuration files.
Running a Transaction
Tender Selection
Once a user has signed on with their Cashier ID and Lane Number, the following screen will display.

Six tender buttons can fit on a page; if more than six tender are defined, additional tenders may be
selected through the use of the Next and Prior buttons. The number of available pages and the page you
are currently on is displayed on the bottom right of the middle screen section.
On this screen, the six buttons are numbered 1 to 6. These numbers act as hotkeys for the appropriate
button; the cashier can select the number of the button on the keyboard rather than click it with the
mouse.
No Tender Buttons
The first time VT2 is signed on, it retrieves configuration files from WinEPS. If the WinEPS service is not
running and VT2 cannot download its configuration, the following screen may display.

To correct this issue, be certain that WinEPS is up and running, and that the Setup.Txt file in the
\Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS directory has a “CTCPREMOTEADDR1=” IP address entry that
correctly points to the WinEPS server. Then Sign Off and Sign On again.
Cashier Activated
The Tender Type selection screen allows the cashier to select a specific tender for the transaction. When
the Cashier selects a tender type, the terminal (if attached) will move onto the next portion of the
sequence, typically attempting to get a card slide.
One option that can be set on the Configuration screen is the Use Generic EFT button. If this option is
selected, the first button on the Tender Type Selection screen will be Generic EFT. If the cashier selects
this button, VT2 will determine the tender to be processed based off of the tender selected on the
attached terminal. The Generic EFT key cannot be used without a terminal.

Customer Activated
If the customer selects a tender on the terminal, the cashier must either select the same tender on VT2,
select the Generic EFT key, or wait until the customer has both selected their tender and slid their card. If
the cashier does any of these things, VT2 will move onto the Transaction Type Selection screen.
Selecting Transaction Type
After the tender is selected, the type of transaction to be performed must be determined.
From the Transaction Type Selection screen, the cashier can determine what transaction type to perform.
Transaction type determines whether a transition is a purchase, return, force, etc. Note that if a Void is
desired, it must be performed through the use of the Utilities button.
If both the terminal and the cashier set a different transaction type, for example if Balance Inquiry is
selected on the terminal, and Purchase on VT2, the transaction type selected on VT2 will be the one that
is utilized for the transaction.
Voiding a Transaction
For information on voiding a transaction, refer to the Utilities Screen section below. Transactions may be
voided either by POS sequence number, MTX Sequence number, or if the transaction to be voided was
the last one run on VT2, and VT2 has not been shut down, the cashier may select Void Last.
Entering Additional Data
Almost all transactions will require additional data to be entered by the cashier before the transaction can
be sent to WinEPS for processing. These required fields can include the purchase amount, cash back
amount, and manual card data entry.

At the top of each screen is text that describes the nature of the required information, and any restrictions
on the entry. The example above indicates that the cashier should enter the Credit Card number as
shown on the front of the credit card.
Entries that represent dollar amounts display a decimal place in the entry box. The amount entry box will
not accept any non-numeric entry, such as a decimal point, so that an entry of 12345 is displayed as
123.45, and indicates to VT that the value entered is $123.45.
All fields requested must have a value entered; for example if cash back is prompted for and no cash
back is desired, a zero must be entered.
Most screens contain only one field that requires data, but some contain up to three fields. After all the
fields on a screen are filled in, the cashier may either press enter or may select the Ok button to continue.

Transaction Results: Approval or Decline
Once VT2 has acquired all the required data, it will send the transaction to WinEPS for processing up to
the payments host. The transaction will receive either an approval or a decline.
The following screen is an example of an approved transaction.
An approved transaction has been completed successfully, and will generate a receipt, depending on the
receipt printing configuration settings in VT2.
An example of a declined transaction is shown below.
Transactions that are declined indicate that the payment or other transaction types was rejected. The
decline screen often has additional information the reason for the decline, dependant on the messaging
provided by the host and by WinEPS.

While most declines do not create receipts, some declines will generate receipts.
Receipts
VT2 utilizes the receipt format sent down from WinEPS upon the completion of a transaction. The two
possible receipts are the Drawer receipt that might contain a signature line, if needed, and the Customer
receipt.
Receipts are printed to the default printer for the computer that VT2 is running on. This is a standard
printer like a laser printer, and not the small receipt printer that other POS systems utilize.
The settings for receipt printing are changed in the Configuration screen; the settings are Preview, which
will show the cashier the receipt and give them the option of printing it or Always, which will always print
the receipts without a review screen being shown to the cashier.
Below is an example of the receipt preview.
To print the receipts the cashier may select the Print button; if printing the receipts is not desired, the
cashier may select Done instead.

Utilities Screen
The Utilities Screen allows the cashier to perform several extra functions that deal with transactions.
These functions include reprinting previous receipts and voiding transactions.
Reprint Receipt
The cashier may reprint receipts from transactions previously preformed on VT2.
VT2 keeps a list of all the transactions it has performed during the current day, and makes those receipts
available to reprint. The receipt information is stored in the OpenEPS directory as a file labeled
Transactions[Lane Number].dat. Receipt information is cleared at the same time the lane journal log files
are cut over: upon the first sign on after midnight.

To reprint a receipt, highlight the receipt listing and select the Print (F3) button at the bottom of the
screen.
If no receipts are available for printing, the following screen will be displayed.
Void Last
Virtual Terminal 2 can void the transaction it has just completed.
Clicking on Void Last will void the previous transaction that VT2 has run. There is no confirmation request
to this void, so it is best to be cautious when using it.
An approved void will be displayed to the VT2 screen as shown below.
Void POS Transaction
Selecting Void POS Transaction will allow the cashier to void a transaction by the POS Transaction
Number. VT2 can void any transaction taken since the previous end of day, including transactions
performed on other VT2 installations, or the store’s POS system.

To void a transaction, click the Void POS Transaction button. Enter the WinEPS Sequence number on
the Void Transaction window.
To void a transaction by the POS Transaction Number, the cashier must first determine the correct
number to use. For VT2, the POS Transaction Number is only listed once, at the end of the transaction.
The screen below displays the POS Transaction Number VT00007.
POS systems often display the POS Transaction Number on the transaction receipt. Some POS systems
do not use unique POS Transaction Numbers for each transaction, and instead use one POS Transaction
Number for an entire customer’s sale, even if the sale included multiple tenders; if this is the case, the
POS Transaction Number cannot be used to void the transaction successfully, and a void by MTX
Sequence Number should be performed instead.

Void MTX Sequence Number
Selecting Void MTX Sequence Number will allow the cashier to void a transaction by the MTX Sequence
Number. VT2 can void any transaction taken since the previous end of day, including transactions
performed on other VT2 installations, or the store’s POS system.
To void a transaction, click the Void MTX Sequence Number button. Enter the WinEPS Sequence
number on the Void Transaction window.
The MTX Sequence Number is always unique per transaction, so it is the best method to use when
voiding a transaction from previous the same day.
The MTX Sequence Number is located on the MTX receipt, as shown below:
Additionally, the MTX Sequence Number can be located on the WinEPS main screen

Sign Off / Exit
Clicking the Sign Off button will sign of the current cashier, but will leave the Virtual Terminal 2 GUI up
and running, ready to sign on the next Cashier.
To exit Virtual Terminal 2, the cashier may select either the red X in the upper right corner, or they may
select the Exit button (F12) on the bottom right once they have signed off.

Customizing VT2
Virtual Terminal 2 supports customized graphics and text labeling. Users may change the text displayed
on Utility, Tender or Transaction selection buttons and may utilize their own graphic icons on various VT2
screens and buttons.
Renaming the Virtual Terminal 2 Buttons
To better reflect the names that individual stores have for their tenders and transactions, Virtual Terminal
2 button labels are configurable. This allows individual VT2 buttons to be named according to store
conventions for that transaction type.
The labels are stored in XML files distributed with Virtual Terminal. Menu_TenderType.xml contains the
header text and button text for the Tender Type Selection Screen.

XML files use a specific format, and are viewable with Internet Explorer. However, to make changes to an
XML file, you must open them with a text editor such as Notepad.
XML File Descriptions
Below is an example of the Menu_TenderType.xml file.

icon displayed. The remainder of the file is dedicated to the buttons displayed.
This list of buttons is the entire list of possible buttons that VT2 may display on the Tender Type Selection
Screen; when the Terminal Configuration is set in WinEPS, VT2 uses the allowed transactions to pick the

buttons that will be displayed, drawing their information from this list. Never remove a button from this list,
even if you do not utilize it – VT2 will not display a button that is not turned on in the WinEPS
configuration.
To make changes to the buttons, specific sections of the button entry can be altered.

VT2, dependant on what transactions are configured and valid for the given tender. Never remove a
button from this list, even if you do not utilize it – VT2 will not display a button that is not turned on in the
WinEPS configuration.

The Menu_Utilities.xml file contains the same configurable entries that Menu_TransType.xml contains.
XML File Placement
The XML configuration files must be placed in a sub directory of the OpenEPS directory in which the VT2
executable resides. Specifically, the Menu_TenderType.xml, Menu_TransType.xml, and
Menu_Utilities.xml files must be placed in the OpenEPS\VT2.Dat\Views directory. If this directory does
not exist, it must be created.
VT2 Subdirectories
Once the files are edited and placed in the proper directory, the next time that VT2 is started, the changes
will be loaded.
Changing the button labels, Step by Step
To change the labels on Virtual Terminal 2, follow the steps below:
1. Locate the Menu_TenderType.xml, Menu_TransType.xml, and Menu_Utilities.xml files on the WinEPS installation CD in the \Virtual Terminal II\VT2 Config Files\ folder.
2. Copy those files to the \Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS\VT2.Dat\Views directory. If the VT2.Dat directory and Views subdirectory do not exist, you must create them.
3. Verify that these files are not Read Only; left click on the file and select Propertys. If the Read Only attribute at the bottom is checked, uncheck it.
4. Once the files are in place, they may be edited. Open the first file with a text editor, such as Notepad.

5. Once open, you may change the button Title, Icon, or Tool Tip text; be certain not to alter the XML tags themselves. Refer to the description section above for information on what items can be altered.
6. Once the altered files are saved, verify that VT2 has been configured properly in WinEPS. In the WinEPS GUI, go to Configuration | Terminal Configuration > OpenEPS Lanes. Select the configuration for Virtual Terminal 2.
7. Verify that all transactions that will be used are on (green check), and that the transactions that are not used are turned off (red X)

8. Continue any terminal configuration necessary, referring to the WinEPS users guide and the WinEPS Setup section above for setup details.
9. Save your Terminal Configuration settings.
10. Stop then restart WinEPS to implement any configuration changes; verify that WinEPS is up before proceeding.

11. Sign on to VT2. Signing on causes the configuration files to be downloaded from the WinEPS server. At this point, VT2 is ready to run.
Graphics Customization
Certain graphical elements in Virtual Terminal 2 can be customized. VT2 has an inbuilt library of GIF
images that it utilizes during operation. These graphics can be supplanted by user specified graphics.
To switch out specific graphics, the user can either create a new graphic for use in all cases where VT2
normally uses another graphic, or the user may modify the XML files as stated above, and change the
icon name and path to indicate a different graphic to display.
GIF Images
VT2 utilizes the following directory structure.
GIF files are stored in the Buttons, Icons and Misc sub-folders.
All graphics to be displayed must be GIF files. Graphics to be displayed on buttons must be exactly 64 by
64. Graphics to be displayed on the left of the screen are between 256 by 256 and 256 by 386.
Miscellaneous graphics are generally 64 by 64.

Changing the button labels, Step by Step
To change the graphics on Virtual Terminal 2, follow the steps below:
1. Create desired GIF graphic that will replace a graphic in VT2; be certain to use a graphic of the proper size. See above for information on graphic sizes.
2. Determine if the graphic will replace all instances of a specific VT2 graphic, or if it will be used only on one of the specific editable XML files (Menu_TenderType.xml, Menu_TransType.xml, and Menu_Utilities.xml).

Replacement GIF
3. If the GIF is a replacement, use the charts above to name it the same as the image it will be replacing. So to replace the changepin.gif, create a new GIF and rename it to changepin.gif.
4. Place the replacement GIF file in the appropriate directory. The changepin.gif image is stored in the OpenEPS\VT2.Dat\Graphics\Buttons directory, so place the replacement graphic there. In the appropriate directory does not exist, create it.
Specific Entry
5. If the GIF is for a specific entry only, place the graphic in the OpenEPS\VT2.Dat\Graphics\Misc directory. If that directory does not exist, create it.
6. Edit the Button Icon and Path in the appropriate XML file so that it points to the “Graphics\Misc\Filename.GIF” (Where Filename is the name of the new graphics file).
7. Once the new graphic has been placed in the appropriate directory and the XML file has been modified (if necessary), VT2 will use the ne graphic the next time the application is started.
Specifying a path for Offline, Sequence Number, and TOR files
In the Citrix environment multiple copies of Virtual Terminal will be running out of the same OpenEPS
directory. VT can potentially write offline, Sequence Number, and TOR files, which are typically written to
the OpenEPS directory; in this environment, VT may not connect up to the same Citrix server each time.
The ALTFILEPATH keyword has been added to the OpenEPS.INI file to allow the user to specify a
separate location where offline, Sequence Number, and TOR files will be stored by OpenEPS when
created.
It is recommended that a full network path be utilized instead of relative pathing. Relative pathing will
originate at the location of the VT2.EXE file.

Additional information about the OpenEPS.INI file can be found in the WinEPS User's Guide.
To specify a path for Offline, Sequence Number, and TOR files, follow the steps below.
1. Go to the \Program Files\MicroTrax\OpenEPS\ directory where your VT2.Exe resides.
2. Determine if the OpenEPS.INI file already exists in the directory:
If it does, open it up with a text editor.
If it does not, create a text file named OpenEPS.INI and open it with a text editor.
3. Add the ALTFILEPATH keyword to the file, with an equals (=) sign and then the full path to the location for the offline files.

4. Save the OpenEPS.INI file.
Transporting VT2 Customizations
Any customization done to VT2 can be transported or copied to another installation of VT2.
To transport customizations, copy the entire VT2.dat directory (and sub directories) to the OpenEPS
directory where the new VT2 is installed.
Additionally, it may be desirable to copy any setting changes made in the configurations screen.

The configurations on this screen are stored in the vt2setup.xml file which can be found in the OpenEPS
directory. To transport these setting, simply copy the vt2setup.xml file to the OpenEPS directory where
the new VT2 is installed.

Other Configuration Options
Using the MagTEK MINI check reader
Virtual Terminal Raw MICR Configuration
Virtual Terminal 2 can use the MagTEK MINI check reader to acquire check MICR information.
Follow the steps below to configure VT to accept RawMICR information from the MagTEK MINI check
reader
1. Start VT.

3. Enter the configuration password. If you need assistance acquiring the configuration password, contact MTX Support.
4. Select the Prompt for Raw MICR option at the bottom of the configuration screen.
5. Press the Ok button to save your settings.

Setting up Serial Keys
Follow the steps in each section.
Installing the USB Driver
To install the USB driver, follow the steps below.
1. Insert driver disk supplied by Magtek.
2. Attach the MICR to an available USB port; Windows should recognize that new hardware has been added.
3. On the Windows New Hardware Wizard, select No when asked to connect to Windows Update to search for software.
4. Click Next to continue.
5. Select the option to Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).

6. Click next to continue.
7. Select the option Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.
8. Click Next to continue.

9. On the Hardware Type screen select Show All Devices and click Next.
10. On the Driver Selection screen, select the Have Disk… button.
11. Click Next to continue.
12. At the Install from Disk screen select the drive where you have the inserted disk supplied by Magtek.

13. Browse the CD for the MICR driver; the driver is called mtud3410.INF and should be located in the USB-2K-XP directory. If you are not running Windows XP, a different directory may be available.
14. Click Open to continue.

15. Verify the path is correct and then press OK to begin installation.
16. 1Windows will complete the driver installation.
Loading the Magtek USB MICR reader via MICRBase
To load the MICR Reader, be sure it is attached to the PC, and follow the steps below.
1. Got to Start | Settings, and select Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, select the System option.

3. On the System Properties screen, select the Hardware Tab.
4. Click the Device manager button.

5. Browse down to Ports (COM & LPT) and expend the list by clicking on the + sign.
6. Verify that the COM port for the USB Mini MICR reader is 1, 2, 3, or 4.
7. Browse to the CD drive where the MICRBase CD is located; if the CD is not in a drive, insert it.
8. Copy all files from the MICRBase CD to a convenient location on your computer such as a folder on the desktop.

9. Browse this location and launch the MICRbase.exe program
10. Choose the Configure option from the menu list; this will bring up the Configure screen.

11. Change the setting to match those shown above.
12. In the Format box, type in 7700
13. Select the Edit Flexible Format String… button.
14. Copy the following string into the Edit Flexible Format String box:

15. Click Ok to return to the Configure screen.

16. Click the DOWNload Configuration to MICR button to load the MICR reader.
Setting up Serial Keys
To set up the serial keys, follow the steps below.
1. Got to Start | Settings, and select Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, select Accessibility Options.
3. On the Accessibility Options screen, select the General Tab.

4. In the SerialKey devices section, click on the Settings Button.
5. On the Settings for SerialKeys screen, use the Serial Port dropdown box to select the COM port to which the MICR is attached.
6. Set the Baud rate to 9600.

7. Click Save to save the changes. This will return you to the Accessibility Options screen.
8. In the SerialKey devices section, check the box for Use Serial Keys.

9. In the Administrative Options section check the boxes next to “Apply all settings to logon desktop” and “Apply all settings to defaults for new users”.
10. Click Ok to save the setting changes.
11. MICR Configuration is complete and the MagTEK MINI check reader should now be ready for use with Virtual Terminal.
Alternate Receipt Printer
Typically, Virtual Terminal uses a standard, full size PC printer to print out the receipt information.
However Virtual Terminal also supports a smaller printer designed for receipt printing.
CT-S2000 Thermal Printer by Citizen Systems
Virtual Terminal supports the CT-S2000 Printer for printing receipts. To set up the CT-S2000 for use with
Virtual Terminal, simply install it as a printer on the machine on which Virtual Terminal is running. Once
the printer is installed, select that printer as the default printer for the PC. Virtual Terminal automatically
uses the default printer for all receipt printing.
Specifying Receipt Header and Footer in a Citrix Environment
In the Citrix environment multiple copies of VT2 will be running out of the same OpenEPS directory.
The receipt data is stored in the storeconfigurations.xml file, but only the default receipt data text can be
edited through the WinEPS GUI. It is therefore necessary to directly edit the storeconfigurations.xml file to
enter receipt data for each different store number that will be used in the Citrix environment.
Creating the receipt header and footer
To create header and footer data specific to each store, the storeconfigurations.xml file must be edited.
Any store that does not have specific text defined will use the default values (as listed for store zero).
Follow the steps below to create a receipt file:
1. Locate the storeconfigurations.xml file. This is generally stored in the C:\Program Files\MicroTrax\EPS directory if using WinEPS. If using ServerEPS (OpenEPS Direct solution), then contact MTX Support for information on locating the file.
2. Open storeconfigurations.xm with a text editor.

3. Locate the section for <“ReceiptText StoreNumber="0"> and copy it. Include everything from the opening <“ReceiptText StoreNumber="0"> through the closing </ReceiptText>.
4. Insert the copied text just below the original.
5. Edit the <ReceiptText StoreNumber="0"> field to replace the “0” with the correct store number.
6. Edit the text for the Receipt Header, Receipt Footer, and Check Deposit lines as desired; remember to align the text using spaces as shown above.

7. Save the file after the changes are made and open it with Internet Explorer to confirm the XML file is correctly formatted. If the file does not open, or displays errors in IE, then the XML formatting is incorrect and should be reviewed.
8. Repeat the steps above to add in additional stores’ settings. When completed the storeconfigurations.xml file should contain a section with unique text for each store.

Appendix A
Running a Transaction on Virtual Terminal
This section demonstrates a typical manual Credit Purchase Force (often called voice auth) transaction
run by Virtual Terminal 2.
The steps below outline a typical Virtual Terminal 2 transaction.

9. Enter a manager ID and password, if required. The ID and password are entered as one string of characters, so if the manager ID is 111 and the manager password is 222, then enter 111222 on this line.
10. Virtual Terminal 2 will begin processing, sending all the transaction information to WinEPS.

11. Virtual Terminal 2 will display the transaction result when received from WinEPS.
12. The Virtual Terminal 2 receipt settings may allow VT2 to show the cashier a virtual receipt. The cashier should select print to create a receipt to give to the customer.

If VT2 receives a set of parameters in the command line where some or all are incorrect, it will ignore all
the parameters that are incorrect and will proceed to operate using the correct ones only.
Command line parameters may be designated with either the colon or the equal sign.
Example command lines:

Command line parameters may not have spaces in the values. In the example above, if YourName had a
space in it (Your Name) then the command line would be invalid
