3. Scope
Equip Duders Regional Park with the basic tools to:
• Monitor the availability of water for the animal
welfare
• Measure environmental factors affecting feed
supply and farm performance and impact
• Provide alerts for issues that may require immediate
attention
• Provide a visual dashboard for real-time monitored
data, trends
• Create an open platform for business performance
uses, analytics and reporting
• Build knowledge and experience to enable trend
analysis, predictions for broader insights.
Future:
Pasture colour capture, Animal weight.

1. We learnt how to build and code an open source data telemetry network from scratch.
Auckland ICT Innovation
10
2. We learnt how NOT to deploy sensors and discovered some unexpected hazards.
Auckland ICT Innovation
11
3. We connected the old woolshed to the internet using a LoRa radio and a 4G modem
Auckland ICT Innovation
12
4. Parts of the farm are steep and remote, we found a handy high spot to make everything connect.
We built a solar powered LoRarepeater/sunlight sensor and installed it in the trig station.

5. Time to deploy some water trough sensors. We were careful to follow council protocol, one person works works while two keep watch.

6. We designed and built our own soil sensors that monitor moisture at 3 levels below ground.

Why #1
Auckland ICT Innovation
27
Why #1
We needed a means to experiment and test ideas at low cost and risk because:
Uncertainty and doubtOur business had some idea of the potential but had more questions than answers. There is no money to invest until its better understood.
Vendor options, restrictions and complexityCertificates tokens required at access shared networks and servicesComplex Device on-boardingSpecialised librariesMessage size and format restrictionsAir time restrictionsCoverage limitations, will it work where we need it?Proprietary and high cost hardwareService contracts and commercial expectations
Auckland ICT Innovation
28
Why #2
We are facing some big challenges.
Not just in making better use of our capital and resources.

Why #3
We need to get everyone onboard. A solution that works for Educators and Community groups.
