Welcome Back
Welcome back to the 2021 school year at Eaglehawk North Primary. I know the staff have been working hard to ensure that we have some exciting programs planned for all of our students from Prep - 6. A big welcome to all of our new families that are joining the Eaglehawk North community in 2021. We are looking forward to getting to know you and ensuring that your time with us is positive and rewarding.
New Staff
I would like to welcome Kellie Grant who joins our Year 1-2 group as a teacher after Prue Kelly has accepted a teaching position at Golden Square Primary School. Shirley Symons and Sandra Dalrymple join the teaching staff at Eaglehawk North and will be involved in the schools tutorial program in 2021.

COVID-19 Current Restrictions
We have received notification form the Department of Education this morning regarding a response to the Covid-19 situation that has occurred overnight. I would ask that you all observe the following when attending Eaglehawk North in the coming days.
We still want you to be able to pick up and drop off your children at school. Our preference would be that you do these things at the Franklin Street Gate, the Drive Through area or you designated pick up spot. The exception to this will be parents/carers of Prep or Grade 1 children who are still be orientated to the school or new rooms within the school. Again we would ask these people not to linger on the site but drop off and pick up quickly.
If you have other business with us, can you please ring Katrina or Liz in the office and book a time to come and see us.
If you are in the office area or at a meeting, we request that you wear a mask in indoor spaces.
We will commence school assemblies from tomorrow. Assemblies are to be attended by students and staff only at this stage.
If you have any questions about these matters, can you please contact the school.
I am confident that these measures are only temporary and we will move back to a more relaxed set of protocols very quickly. With that in mind we are planning to commence a couple of our community activities over the next few weeks. An agenda item at next week’s School Council meeting will be the reopening community events. After this discussion we would look at opening Playgroup in the next week or so , Breakfast Club in the next few weeks and commencing negotiations with sporting bodies to commence using our facilities for training.
School Parking
I have had some members of our community express their concerns regarding people parking around the school at pick up time in the afternoon.
We have new owners of the vacant block at the end of Franklin Street and they are requesting that parents/cares do not use the block as a parking space.
It has also come to our attention that people are parking in no standing spaces around the immediate area of the school. The City of Greater Bendigo parking department have contacted us regarding these matters and will be attending Eaglehawk North to police parking rules over the next few weeks.
Insurance
Principals must inform parents/guardians and students at enrolment, and remind them annually, that private
property brought to school by students is not insured by the school or covered by school insurance, and that
it is not the responsibility of the Department if that property is lost, stolen or damaged.

Welcome to our 2021 school year. I hope you all have had a relaxing and peaceful break. It has been
wonderful catching up with students in their new grades, families and new staff members. We have had
a settled start to the year and I look forward to lots of new and exciting learning taking place throughout
the year. We are shortly reintroducing our wonderful Playgroup and Breakfast program which we have
missed over the last 12 months.
Earlier this week I popped into the Prep grades and noted how well they have settled in.
If you have any concerns about anything at all, please feel free to pop in to my office for a chat.
Assembly
This week’s assembly will take place at the front of the school. It has been some time that we have been
able to meet together as a whole school. During assembly we present the Principals Award and School
Values Award which students and families are very proud of. At this week’s assembly the House
Captains will be announced which is a wonderful opportunity for students to take on a leadership role in
the school. As part of our SWPBS our staff and students have been practising how to enter Friday
morning assembly and be attentive listeners during presentations.
Quiet Helpers
Over the holiday break we had a lovely lady volunteer to take home our spare uniforms. She returned early last week with boxes and bags full of freshly washed, bagged and labelled uniforms which the ladies in the office use as spares for students in need. We would like to pass on as a school our thanks
to Elaine McGrath for her wonderful assistance.
Are You A Carer?
Do you care for a school aged child with a disability, learning disability, mental illness or chronic
illness. Please see the flyer at the back of the newsletter for information around a support group meeting
run by Bendigo Health that you might like to join.

SCHOOLS’ PRIVACY POLICY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FOR PARENTS The Schools’ Privacy Policy informs the school community that information about students can be shared to fulfil the schools’ core functions of educating and supporting our students. The Schools’ Privacy Policy establishes a clarified ‘need to know’ framework, where school staff share in-formation about students with other staff who need to know as part of their role. This is consistent with Vic-torian privacy law.
Who does the policy apply to? The policy applies to all central, regional and school staff including principals, teachers, visiting teachers, social
workers, wellbeing staff, youth workers, nurses, Student Support Service officers (SSSOs) and all other allied health
practitioners. This means the ‘need to know’ framework below also applies to all school staff, whether employees,
service providers (contractors) and agents (whether paid or unpaid) of the Department.
Need to know All school staff can, and must, share information about a student with other staff who ‘need to know’ that infor-
mation to enable the school to:
educate the student (including to plan for individual needs or address barr iers to learning)
support the student’s social and emotional wellbeing and health
fulfil legal obligations, including to:
take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of reasonably foreseeable harm to the student, other students, staff or visi-
tors (duty of care)
make reasonable adjustments for a student’s disability (anti‑discrimination law)
provide a safe and secure workplace (occupational health and safety law).
Who decides who ‘needs to know’? Subject to the principal’s direction, each staff member decides who needs to know specific, relevant information
about a student, based on the ‘need to know’ framework.
Sharing relevant information with other staff who ‘need to know’ is very different from idle conversation or gossip.
School staff are entrusted with a large amount of important information about students. Staff must treat all such
personal and health information sensitively and respectfully, and not share it other than on this ‘need to know’ basis.

What information and records can be transferred to a student’s next Victorian government school? When a student has been accepted at another Victorian government school, the current school can provide personal and health
information about the student to that next school.
This can occur in any, and all, of the following ways:
verbally: principal to principal (or authorised representatives).
on paper: by providing copies of the student’s records (including any health reports) to that next school
electronically: including through the CASES21 transfer function; the Student Online Case System (SOCS) and/or via email.
Principals (or authorized representatives) determine what information to provide to that next Victorian government school based
on the ‘need to know’ framework:
What information does the next school ‘need to know’ to properly educate or support the student, and fulfil the school’s legal
obligations?
‘NEED TO KNOW’ framework Duty of care A school’s duty of care to students means that a principal or other member of the leadership team needs to know about any rea-
sonably foreseeable risk of harm to anyone because of the student’s behaviour, disability, family circumstances or any other
relevant circumstances related to the student.
So, for example, if there is a reasonably foreseeable risk to anyone because the student:
displays violent behaviours
is a victim or perpetrator of bullying, assault or age-inappropriate sexualised behaviours
has emotional, wellbeing or self-harm issues
then staff must tell the principal (or other member of the school leadership team).
The principal will then share relevant information with any other staff member that needs to know because they work with, or
supervise, the student. Staff must provide the principal with enough relevant information required to adequately fulfil their own
duty of care – so that the principal can fulfil their duty of care too.
Importantly, when there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of harm, staff should act on that information and share the information
with other staff who ‘need to know’, even if the student or parent asks that information not be shared.
Anti-discrimination law A school’s obligation to provide reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities (regardless of whether they are eligible un-
der the Program for Students with Disabilities) means that relevant information about a student’s disability and their needs must
be shared with all staff who work with or supervise that student.
This is required to enable the school to make properly informed decisions about what adjustments are reasonable, and then to
implement those adjustments.
This may also be required to meet the duty of care to that student (for example, a student with a medical condition who may re-
quire treatment).
This means that relevant information must be shared with staff who work with or supervise that student, to enable them to:
understand the student’s disability and how it affects their learning and social or emotional wellbeing
implement reasonable adjustments at school, including understanding all recommendations made by the student’s treating practitioners.
The relevant school policies are followed by school staff when engaging with parents, such as wellbeing and behavior
polices. Go to your school’s website for relevant polices.
School staff are available to provide further information about school policies and handling of personal information or
contact the DET Privacy Officer at [email protected].

Bendigo City Council
Parking and Animal Services from the City of Greater Bendigo have contacted our school
and requested that the following information be conveyed to our school community.
The illegal parking of vehicles adjacent to our school poses a safety concern to children,
pedestrians and other road users. Parents are reminded that it is essential to comply with
parking restrictions when dropping off and collecting children from school.
Motorists must not stop in no stopping areas, even briefly, with or without the motor
running. They must not stop next to a continuous yellow edge line, on resident’s nature
strips, too close to school crossings, park over driveways or double park. A number of
schools have short term time restricted areas, such as 2 minute pick up drop off. These
parking areas are in place to allow for ease of access close to schools and these restrictions
must be adhered to. Drivers should also be aware that they cannot perform a U-turn over
an unbroken or continuous dividing line.
With regard to children’s crossings, the law requires that a driver approaching a children’s
crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary stop safely before the
crossing. Please slow down and take extra care when driving in school zones.
City of Greater Bendigo Parking Officers and Bendigo Police do conduct random patrols
throughout the school year at various locations to ensure that motorists are adhering to the
Road Rules.
