SEPTEMBER 2021
A word from the Principal… RETURN TO REMOTE & FLEXIBLE LEARNING
This is not the ideal situation for our students but we are so proud of the way our school community has once again come together to provide a seamless learning program for the children, as we have returned to remote and flexible learning. Students have been quick to get back into
the learning and activities however we are also mindful of your child’s/children’s wellbeing. Remote learning should not be stressful, if it is then please reach out to us for some new strategies or simply change focus. We know you are all doing what you can for your wonderful children. The children are learning all the time, I’m sure with being at home they have been having time to learn different things, building independence and creativity.
PARENT GOOGLE MEET Thank you to Shannon Gibbons for co-hosting our first Parent Google Meet last Wednesday. It was wonderful to listen to strategies parents are using at home and acknowledge some of the stresses and challenges families have overcome during remote learning. We will share the ideas and information parents suggested on the Assembly Google Classroom for all families to access. Our next meeting will be Wednesday 1st September, feel free to join in with a cuppa! We encourage all families to do at least one ’self care’ activity this weekend to be able to have some ‘time out’ to rest & recharge and be kind to yourselves. Go for a walk, kick the footy in the backyard, read a book, watch a movie, bake a cake - what will you choose to do?
Take Care and Be Kind to Yourselves!

LEARNERS OF THE WEEK
Last week as a part of our Science Week celebrations Red Home Group conducted a Diet Coke and Mentos experiment. We used paper to make a tube funnel and placed a whole packet of Mentos into the tube. Then, we took the lid off the Diet Coke and very quickly tipped the Mentos in. The Mentos all sank quickly which caused a fast and very exciting eruption.
“It was awesome when it
exploded!” – Kendal
“I liked it when it went up really high”
– Devin
“The coke went up in the air, high like a tree” – Mikey
“It was good when the Mentos made the coke explode up in the air” - Wyatt

What’s happening at Nilma.. PARENT/CAREGIVER/GUARDIAN OPINION SURVEY
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/caregivers/guardians think of our school. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents/caregivers/guardians (previously known as the Parent Opinion Survey). It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, student engagement and experiences of remote and flexible learning. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year, the Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey has been extended and will close on Friday 3rd September.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English.
Thank you to the 9 families that have completed the survey. Emails with the ;link and individual pins will be redistributed to families on Monday 30th August, please ignore the email if you have already completed the survey.
Last year we used the survey results to assist in planning our 2021 Annual Implementation Plan.
Please speak to the Principal or contact the Office if you would like more information.
PARENT ‘CATCH UP’ GOOGLE MEET It was wonderful to see parents - and staff! - join our ‘Parent Catch Up’ yesterday through the Google Classroom/Meet format. It was a great opportunity for parents to talk about their experiences and share strategies that they had found helpful for themselves and families. We will be hosting another ‘catch up’ next Wednesday 1st September. Please join us if you can! We encourage all our school families to take care of yourselves and reach out for support if you need it, no matter who small. There are a number of support agencies in the local area that families can access.
This week Green Group carried out a Skittles Science Experiment for Science Week. The class worked in pairs and placed the skittles in a circle on a white plate. They carefully poured just enough water over the plate to cover the skittles. We all enjoyed watching the colour come off the skittles and making rainbow colours in the water. We discussed that the coloured shell on the skittles was made from sugar and that sugar dissolves in water so that is why the water changed colour. Here are some lovely photos of the rainbow. It was interesting to note that the letter S on the skittles didn’t dissolve…….I wonder why?

To spark interest for Science Week, students engaged in an
experiment to create a teabag rocket. With instructions
followed and care taken students discussed what happened
and their thinking of how. An explanation was read; as to
how the rocket is launched. This was an introduction into
the purpose of information – explanatory text.
The theme for Science week this year is ‘Food Different by
Design’. Students in Blue Home Group explored bread
making and the role of yeast. Students learnt about the
activation of yeast and the processes in forming, kneading
and shaping dough. Using the dough to form neat balls and
having baked them in the oven, the room smelt amazing and
the rolls were enjoyed with butter and students’ choice of
spread. Yum!

SCHOOL PRODUCTION
The whole school production has been postponed until Thursday 2nd December. Due to the current guidelines, the school had decided to postpone the production to allow students to share the event with the entire school community. We are also investigating ways that we may be able to share the production with our school community if guidelines regarding visitors and density limits don’t allow us to produce the production to a live audience.

WEEK 4 WEEK 5
LEARNERS OF THE WEEK
During Science this term, Yellow Home Group have focused on Chemical Science and the states of matter. We brainstormed examples of the different matter such as; Solid – ice, metal and wood; Liquid – water, syrup and juice; Gas – steam, oxygen and carbon dioxide. During Science Week we conducted an experiment that involved mixing bicarbonate of soda with vinegar to produce Carbon Dioxide. This gas was captured in a balloon and we were able to weigh it to highlight that matter has mass.
for the enthusiasm that you show during play rehearsal. You read your lines with confidence and continue to set an example for your peers to follow. Well done Harry!

Japanese
Over the past few weeks students in the Green, Blue and Yellow home groups have been practising their Japanese language, grammar and number skills. Students have enjoyed partner games
and activities such as ‘Japanese Word Snap’ and ‘Kanji Bingo’. Students have also begun creating a Google Slide document ‘About Me’ in Japanese. Students in the Green home group have also begun learning the Japanese word for each colour. Students in the Red home group have been practising counting in Japanese, learning the Kanji characters for numbers 1-6 and learning the colours in Japanese. It has been wonderful to see all students continuing to use basic phrases throughout our lessons.
OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE (OSHC)
We have had a wonderful start back to term in the OSHC program with a STEAM
room looking in tip top shape with fresh new carpet and a fun new layout. Over
the past couple of weeks, we’ve been working on creating tie dyed hats for each
student with their own funky design which they can wear outside when playing
throughout the program. Uno Flip has also been a favourite amongst the group
with students loving the challenge of being able to flip sides throughout the
game.
We look forward to more cooking, outside games, puzzles, and creative activities
throughout the remainder of term one, with some exciting activities to come.
SUSTAINABILITY
As the Green Gems and Ruby Reds work really hard in
Sustainability classes every week they were rewarded for
their efforts with some time in the kitchen making some
homemade lemon cordial and kale chips. This allowed the students to use ‘kid-
friendly’ knives to learn and practice two cutting techniques, the bear claw and the
bridge, when cutting the lemons in half before juicing and cutting up the kale. Our
focus for science week was ‘why some foods like kale and silverbeet shrink when
cooked’. The students learnt that due to them also being made of lots of water since
that’s what keeps them alive, when you apply heat, that water content evaporates
and the food shrinks.
The Blue Homegroup have also been busy in the kitchen making some yummy
potato and leek soup which they enjoyed with some Indian flatbread that they also
prepared. They also learnt about the difference between a fruit and vegetable and
brainstormed and listed all of the fruit and vegetables they could think of as a class.
We also had a class discussion on what foods work well together and using the food
list the students then designed their own soup and wrote out a recipe of how to
prepare it.
The Yellow Homegroup were split into groups to either build one of our new
Vegepods, design new seed packets to store our seeds in when collected or learning
how to build a climbing structure for our peas planted in
the garden. The Yellow Homegroup have also began a
unit of work on Sustainable Eggs where they are
learning about the 3 different egg production farm
systems; free range, barn-laid and
caged. It was fantastic to see them
all contribute their opinions on
each of these systems in class
discussions, including the
advantages and disadvantages of
each.
PERFORMING ARTS
We recently had the opportunity to explore sounds and perform on an electric drum kit in music class. We learnt about the different parts of a drum kit, what each part sounds like
and then played the drums along to backing tracks and familiar songs. Everyone enjoyed this activity with lots of focus and big smiles.

LIBRARY
NEWS
We continue to read and celebrate the books that are shortlisted in the CBCA Book of the Year competition. The MARC van is currently decorated in sea creatures thanks to Red and Green groups. ‘Anemone is not the Enemy’ is the title, which is a tongue twister, this fun picture book also taught us about the special relationship between the clown fish and the sea anemone. Quiz your child to see if they can explain. ‘Your Birthday was the Best’ inspired Blue group to create birthday cakes and taught us that cockroaches definitely are not the guests to invite to your party, in fact they are listed in a book of dangerous animals! Yellow group really enjoyed reading the book titled AZARIA, the students shared their opinion of this historic Australian story, 95% of students believed it was the dingo, this book promoted lots of discussion about the justice system and judgement by the media, ask your child in Yellow group about the story. The other popular book for Yellow group was a book about Kakadu, this book prompted all students to give the book one of their highest scores so far, it may be responsible for your child wanting a trip to the Northern Territory! Keep up the great reading Nilma!
