DancingAwaytheDizziness

InmytimeworkingintheEmergencyDepartment,Isawvariouscasesrangingfromchestpaintoshortnessofbreathtolacerationstobrokenbones.OneofourERphysician’sleastfavoritecomplaints,butoneofthemostcommon,wasdizziness.

Butwhatdoesdizzinessevenmean?Whetherit’sdescribedaslightheadednessorthatfeelingthat“theroomisspinning,”weallhaveexperienceditatonepointinourlives.Thereasonmyattendingdidn’tlikethischiefcomplaintwasbecausethecausesaresonumerousandpinningdownanexactetiologyisnotasstraightforwardaswewouldlikeittobe,especiallyinanemergencysetting.

Incaseswherethepatientdoesdescribetheroomasgoingaround,wewouldworkupthecaseforvertigo.Theword“vertigo”isthesensethattheenvironmentisspinning.Itisaformofdizzinesscausedbyproblemsinthebrainorinnerear.Differentcausesincludesuddenheadmovements,inflammationwithintheinnerearduetoinfection,Ménière’sdisease,tumors,decreasedbloodflow,injury,ormigraines.Symptomsincludethesensationofdisorientationthatmaybeaccompaniedbynauseaorvomiting,sweating,orabnormaleyemovementscalled“nystagmus.”Theprognosisdependsonthecause,butwhatiftherewasawaytohelpalleviatethosesymptomswiththesametechniquesdancersusetogracefullydotheirpirouettes?

ResearchfromLondonhasfoundthekeytounderstandingdizzinessistorecognizeitisaproblemfromthebrainasopposedtotheears.Thebrainisthemostimportantorganforbalance.Thesensationofself-motionissaidtobecomingfromtheeye,anditisuptothebraintodeterminewhethertheindividualismovingortheobjectinfrontofthem.Themostessentialpartofthebrainforcoordinationandbalanceisthecerebellum,whichwasfoundtobesmallerindancers.Themoreexperiencedthedancer,thesmallerthegreymatter.Sincedancerspracticeformanyhourseverydayforyearstoneverfeeldizzy,theirmovementsarealwaysprecise.Theyknowexactlywheretheirbodyisandcanaccuratelyestimateanycorrection.

Thefindingsfromthisresearcharelookingintohowballetanddancetechniquescouldhelptreatpatientsofchronicdizziness.Themaintaskistoenhancebrainplasticitythroughpracticeandtraining.Patientsneedtolearnthattheyneedtobemakingheadmovementsasearlyastheycan.Withthehelpofbothballetandnon-balletmovements,practicecanmakeperfect.
