Season’s Greetings and Holiday Wishes . . .Season’s Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! It is my sincere hope
that all of our students, parents, friends, family members, and our community members have a wonderful holiday season. Our national holiday of Thanksgiving, with its focus on food, football, and family gatherings served to usher in this special time of year. Many now turn their thoughts to Christmas and the special significance it holds.
Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, during the month of December and the coming of the New Year, all of us tend to reflect back on the entire year. Recognizing that another full calendar year has passed causes one to think about our lives and just how fleeting time can be. I do not know about you, but I have a store of memories that seem to rise to the surface this time of year. Perhaps it is the one marking a first year of marriage, or the birth of a child. Perhaps it is the loss of someone dear to our hearts, memories of our first pet, or our first home. One of the things I like best about this time of year is the recalling of wonderful times past and the story telling that often goes with it!
For me, this year is bringing back a flood of fond memories . . . from five years of age until now, I have had a 1st day of school: kindergarten, elementary and high school, immediately off to college for four years, and then directly to LCS starting with the 1977 school year. That adds up to 60 years of 1st days of school! However, Fall 2019 was my last. On June 30, 2020, I will be retiring. My 43 years at LCS have been filled with memories of many fond moments and experiences, ones I will cherish all of my life. I have been blessed to serve this school, our students and this community, and I want to thank the Boards of Education I have worked for, and each of you, for allowing me this very, very special opportunity. Thank you!
Moving forward, the Board will be appointing Mr. Dorritie as the Superintendent, effective July 1, 2020. He has served our District well for many years as the Building Principal and Athletic Director, and I am confident he will do an outstanding job as your new Superintendent.
In closing, I would again like to wish everyone who celebrates, a very happy and peaceful holiday season. Over the past several years in the December newsletter I have commented just how fortunate we are to live in the communities of Laurens, Mt. Vision, and West Laurens. I truly believe that our small communities are ever so much more safe, quiet, and peaceful places to live than other areas. Not that we are insulated from the outside world, but we truly are a step behind the frenzied pace, and what a comfortable place that is to be. I encourage you to take a walk one night when the air is crisp and the sky full of stars, or when a light snow is falling. This is truly a beautiful place to live, and the blessings bestowed on each of us and on our families are truly too many to count.
Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season and special times with family and friends!

LCS Board of EducationThe Laurens Central School has adopted the fol-
lowing Mission Statement as necessary and desirable to achieve our shared vision of a community working together to provide all children with the best possible education.
Working cooperatively with the home and commu-nity, Laurens Central School will create a learning environment conducive to ensuring student success. We will provide opportunities to prepare all students to become active and responsible citizens in a multi-cultural democratic society. Laurens Central School will provide the knowledge and skills necessary for successful life-long learning.
The Board of Education has also adopted the fol-lowing goals as necessary and desirable to achieve that same shared vision and mission statement. The goals are reviewed annually serve to guide the Board of Education with regard to the overall function-ing of the school district. • Maintain the fiscally responsible, sound financial
management of the District• Develop and maintain safe and secure facilities
that support the delivery of high quality education• Provide academic and extracurricular activities
that encourage participation and at the same time enhance the overall learning experience for all students
• Update and maintain the Board Policy book• Enhance stronger ties to all components of the
communities served by the Laurens Central School District Laurens Village Board
The Laurens Central School welcomes our local Village Board and Board Members into our school. For the third year in a row, the Board is utilizing office space in our building. The Board also holds a monthly business meeting in our building, using room 115. Access to the Village Office is easy — just pull into the main parking lot and use the sliding glass window at the side entrance. Should you need to come into the office to conduct business we suggest that you use one of the visitor parking spots in the bus loop and enter through the main entrance. There, you will sign-in, and be directed to the Village Office. Should you wish to purchase and stay for breakfast, lunch or just have a cup of coffee, our cafeteria is open to our community members. Again, we simply require that all visitors to our building sign in and out at either the receptionist desk or the main entrance, as in any public facility comply with any fire or emergency drills that may occur while you are in our building. Also, please wear your visitor’s pass!

Rotary National Youth Exchange ProgramAs you may be aware, Rotary Organizations across the country sponsor
the “Youth Exchange Program.” With this program, qualifying students are able to spend one school year studying abroad. Presently, the Morris Rotary Program is sponsoring one of our students, Seth Stevens, in this program. Seth is having a wonderful experience in France, attending school, cultural events and exploring the country. This is all possible due to the efforts of the Morris Rotary and a “Host Family” in France.
We are also hosting a Rotary student, Suki Kesavadev, from India, in our school this year. A special thank you to the Robert and Denise White family for hosting our student.
At this time, the Morris Rotary is in the process of interviewing candi-dates for next year’s program. The Rotary would also like to place a student from a foreign country in our school for next year. To accomplish this, we would need a host family, or families as a student can be assigned to multiple families in one school year.
Having a student in your home could provide for a wonderful experience for your own family and children. Becoming a host family provides for an opportunity to learn a new language as well as learning about a new culture. Often, lifelong friendships develop as a result!

“OPERATION WARM” WINTER COAT PROJECT, AND THE 3RD GRADE DICTIONARY AND 6TH GRADE THESAURUS PROGRAM
A special thank you to the Oneonta Rotary for selecting LCS as one of the schools to be a recipient in the “Operation Warm” winter coat project, the 3rd grade Dictionary Project and the 6th Grade Thesaurus project.
On October 28, several different members of the Oneonta Rotary again visited our school to hand out dictionaries to all of our 3rd grade students, and thesauruses to all of our 6th grade students. In the very near future, several members of the Oneonta Rotary will be here to provide warm winter coats to over 20 children in our School District.
There are many organizations that claim “Service to Ones’ Community” as part of their goals and foundational principals. The Oneonta Rotary not only states this but lives it through their actions and programs provided to communities, schools and most importantly, to the children living in our area. And we are so very fortunate that the Oneonta Rotary has chosen to include our school in these projects. Thank you!
And a second and very special thank you to Mrs. Cindy Struckle, our Board President. Mrs. Struckle is a member of the Oneonta Rotary, a former President, and works to make sure our school is included in these programs.

LCS Honors Community VeteransOn Friday, November 8 Laurens Central School held its
annual Veterans Day program and breakfast to honor the men and women who have served our country. Veterans from the United States Army, United States Navy, and United States Marine Corps were in attendance.
After a wonderful breakfast prepared by our cafeteria staff and served by Key Club and Honor Society students our guests, students, and teachers moved to the gym for an assembly. After the singing of the National Anthem and God Bless America by the Chamber Choir and opening remarks by Mrs. Wenck, our guest speaker was introduced by retired Colonel Carlton Cleveland, an LCS alumnus. The guest speaker was Chief Warrant Officer 3 Phil Napolitano. In addition to his service in the armed forces as a helicopter pilot, Chief Napolitano is a retired New York State Police officer who performed many duties, including transporting
the Governor by helicopter to different destinations. The Concert Band, led by Mr. German, did a wonderful rendition of You’re a Grand Old Flag. Victoria Stevens then performed Taps on the trumpet to pay respect to our fallen heroes before closing remarks and a well-deserved standing ovation for all veterans in attendance.
Many thanks to the cafeteria staff for breakfast, the stu-dents who served the veterans and acted as guides/greeters, Mrs. Himes for providing the stars outside the cafeteria, Mrs. DeBoer for the wonderful decorations that were placed outside the gym, and to our students and staff for the warm welcome they gave the veterans. Thank you most of all to all of the men and women who have served our country and continue to do so each and every day. We owe you a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid!
Thank You for Your Service!

CROP NewsThe afterschool Creative Rural Opportunities Program has
had a very busy Fall. Activity Leaders have been promoting a wonderful blend of creative learning and enriching activities for their students.
On October 24, Laurens Central School celebrated 20 years of after school programing by participating in a Lights on Afterschool, Super Hero Party, an event that celebrated Afterschool Programs across the State. Here at Laurens we had a variety of activities. Everyone took part by making super hero masks and bracelets, and playing bowling and math games led by our Activity Leaders. There were about 30 guests that attended. They had a chance to participate in our program and observe the children involved in many activities. They enjoyed watching and participating with the 6-8th grade group, leading games for all the students to enjoy. It was a great tribute to 20 years of afterschool programing.
The CROP Program at Laurens allows students to do homework, participate in many different activities each day, enjoy a healthy snack, learn life skills, and so much more! CROP supports and motivates academic and social growth after school from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Along with our Activity Leaders that plan enriching activities, we have local partner visits from CANO which include music programs, artists, The Farmers’ Museum, along with Girls on the Run, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Hawk Circle.

Ceramics IOn Tuesday, October 22, seven students in Ceramics I
visited Ceramic Artist and teacher, Elizabeth Nields at her home and studio, on Chicken Farm Road in Gilbertsville. They had a chance to tour the property, viewing many of her large outdoor sculptures. Elizabeth also took the students through her show barn explaining the symbolism in many of her pieces. After the tour, Elizabeth demonstrated a variety of wheel throwing techniques. The ceramic students then “threw” their own pieces with Elizabeth’s assistance. An annual tradition is eating a group lunch in her kitchen, using the artist’s plates and goblets. The remainder of the time students trimmed and finished their pieces, which will be fired and glazed by the artist before being delivered to them as finished pieces.
