Mortality: Death in an inevitability; you cannot escape death
Fear: Poe’s intention is that his reader’s fear grows over the course of the story, culminating in an “unutterable horror” by the end of the story.
Foolishness/Ignorance: The guests are ignorant to the reality of the plague, simply shutting it out and continuing to throw extravagant parties. Even when they become quiet at the clock striking, they are unsure why.
