PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Holy One, we confess that in the society we have created for ourselves, All: We have honored the great, the wealthy, the visible, the first, the best; and have forgotten the quiet power of humility, compassion, generosity and selflessness. One: We see what that has yielded: All: Division, inequity, a sense of scarcity and insecurity. One: We struggle with our own anxieties and mistrust, All: Our own betrayal of your call to community, your design for us to live in full consciousness of your love. * BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH (EXCERPT) We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,

and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. NORTHBROOK BOOK CLUB: The Northbrook book Club will meet on Monday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library to discuss Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini. All are welcome to participate.

FREEDOM HOUSE DETROIT COLLECTION—MAY THROUGH JUNE 12: Northbrook Church is collecting for Freedom House Detroit during May through June 12: new flip flops, rice, cooking oil, sugar, flour, salt, coffee, tea, bar soap, shampoo, toilet tissue, paper towels and powdered laundry soap (HE/high efficiency) kind. The collection basket is in the main hallway near the name-tag table. Shopping lists are on the table and the Mission bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. Loose change in the Empty Bowls collection will be used to purchase gift cards. Thank you for your support.

LIVING THE QUESTIONS—SPRING TERM HAS BEGUN: This DVD-based curriculum attempts to offer an alternative to studies that give us all the answers. Come for an interactive discussion as we explore what relevance Christianity has for us today. We meet in the Library through June. Choose either the 10 a.m. session or the 6:30 p.m. session or move between the two as your schedule permits. Cost is $5 for materials. Please let the church office know if you plan to attend.

SENIOR SOUPER SUPPER: Join us for fellowship and a delicious soup dinner on Thursday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the Library. Soup Supper will not meet in June but will resume in July.

KNIT WITS: The Knit Wits will meet on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. Please join us.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: The Northbrook Church office will be closed on Fridays during June, July and August. The office will be open during those months Mondays -Thursdays from 9:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m.

Please welcome our new members: Laura Kerr Laura Kerr grew up in Troy and Royal Oak and attended Royal Oak High School and MSU. She currently lives in Farmington Hills and works as a freelance court reporter. Laura loves community theater and has been very involved in that for many years. She loves storytelling and drama, travel, hiking, gardening and music. She chose Northbrook as her church home because of the clear and inspired sermons, the Open·Rational·Compassionate mission statement and the leadership example of the church leaders. She says “John 13:35 looks to be alive and well here—‘ By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’” Laura is already part of the audio-visual team on Sunday mornings, attends classes and serves as a liturgist. Jennifer Livernois Jennifer Livernois grew up in Sylvania, Ohio, where she attended school. She now lives in Plymouth, where she loves her full-time job as Mother Extraordinaire to her son Dominic who is in the 7th grade. Together, they enjoy traveling, playing basketball and shopping. She retired from owning her own garden design business, but gardening and design remain among her many passions including sports and music. She came to Northbrook at the invitation of a friend and immediately got involved by helping host SOS. She has a heart for people and hands-on mission and looks forward to contributing her abilities and energies here.

SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE—PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Betsy Savage Betsy Savage grew up in Rosedale Park on the NW side of Detroit and now lives in Lathrup Village. She is an MSU graduate and retired from 30 years at WJR radio as the traffic manager. She has 4 adult children and 5 grandchildren including 5-week-old twin boys, a dog and a cat. Betsy loves to read, garden and listen to music. She appreciates Northbrook for being the faith community that she has been seeking and enjoys the labyrinth. Its geographical proximity is a plus! Betsy looks forward to getting involved in the congregation life and mission of the church. Lori Spiewak Lori Spiewak was born in Detroit and moved to Southfield in the 2nd grade where she attended Northbrook Elementary, Birney, and Southfield-Lathrup High Schools. She’s married to Stanley and has two daughters who are both in their twenties. Lori works as a court reporter and for fun enjoys gardening, kayaking, kickboxing and boot camp classes, rummage and garage sales and traveling. Lori actually grew up attending Northbrook. She can remember when the new church was built! She recently returned to Northbrook after almost 40 years and said: “I knew I was home when I heard Pastor Marjorie's sermons and met so many friendly and welcoming members. I look forward to serving at Northbrook, worshiping at Northbrook and enjoying the many volunteer opportunities that await.” Jennifer Wicker Jennifer Wicker was born and raised in Villa Park, California, and moved to Michigan with her parents 9 years ago. She attended Southern New Hampshire University and has a background in marketing. Jennifer now works as an administrative assistant. In her previous job, she worked with Barb Stetson at Macys. Through that connection, she met Mike Wicker, and the rest is history. Mike brought her to Northbrook, where she discovered a strong message and a supportive faith community. Mike and Jennifer were married at Northbrook in October 2015 and are enjoying life together in Royal Oak.
