Computer Aided Design and
Analysis (CAD/E)
Gary Wang, Associate Professor, Ph.D., P. Eng.Dept. of Mechanical & Manufacturing
EngineeringThe University of Manitoba
Welcome to 25.353
Expected Course Outcomes• An understanding of CAD technologies • The ability of using Pro/Engineer• An understanding of the finite element analysis
(FEA)• The ability of using Pro/Mechanica• Increased ability of self-learning• Increased ability in defining and solving an
engineering problem individually as well as in a team setting
• Increased ability of communicate • Satisfaction and enjoyment through struggling,
cooperation and assistance
Why I Value These Outcomes
• CAD/CAE/CAM becomes common practice in industry
• The theoretical part of the course will distinguish you, an engineer, from a software operator.
• A good finite element analyst has to be an engineer!
Why I Value These Outcomes (Cont’d)
• Understanding and proficiency of CAD/CAE will give you an edge of being employed right after your school!
• The ability of self-learning, problem solving, team working, and communication -- life-time abilities
• Fun fun fun -- through struggling and perseverance with assistance
My Teaching Philosophy
• Respect• Responsibility• Participation

Assignments/Labs
• Normally assignments due in a week, lab due at the end of the dedicated time period
• Specific due day for each work will be announced in class
• 20% deduction per day for late work
Marking• Assignments and labs be marked by
TAs• Lab 1 needs a report; Lab 2~5 will be
marked on screen (three chances maximum; you are expected to get full marks for the three labs).
• Project (30% oral by PEs, 70% report by me; chance to improve too)
Exams
• You can DESIGN the exams for me!• No “ambushes”• Include lectures, industrial
presentations, assignments, and labs
Teamwork
• Assignments should be submitted individually
• Labs by a group of two• Projects by a group of four. • All team members get the same mark
unless more than half the team members ask for peer evaluation
Lab Management
• Only directory C:\25.353• No download or deletion• Pro/E work has higher priority over
other work
Other Issues
• Coming to class late• Absences and missed tests and
quizzes• Keeping informed of your grade
Logistics• Me: Gary Wang, E3-476, 474-9463• Office Hour:
– MWF mornings• TAs
