Obstacles that Limit the Mighty Works of Jesus
Mark 6:1-6
A. A Spirit of Unbelief
Mark 6:1, 2
Luke 4:16-21
Luke 4:28-30
2nd Corinthians 5:7
1st Corinthians 2:14-16
Mark 6:1-2
6 Jesus went out from there and *came into His hometown; and His disciples
*followed Him. 2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the
synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these
performed by His hands?
Luke 4:16-21
16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17
And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book
and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed
on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:28-30
28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these
things; 29 and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their
midst, He went His way.
2 Corinthians 5:7
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight—
1 Corinthians 2:14-1614 But a natural man does not accept the things
of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them,
because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who
has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of
Christ.
B. A Spirit of Criticism
Mark 6:3,4
Luke 5:4-8
Mark 6:3-4
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses
and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took
offense at Him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in
his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.”
Luke 5:4-8
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5
Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught
nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;
7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help
them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
C. A Spirit of Skepticism
Mark 6:5,6
Romans 10:17
Mark 6:5-6
5 And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He
wondered at their unbelief.
And He was going around the villages teaching.
Romans 10:17
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
