Basketball

Chris Patureau (pat tour row) knows of what he speaks when he says that this year’s

Northeast Christian Academy(NCA) Boys’ Basketball squad was more in sync on and off the court.

“We had probably more (physical) talent last year whereas this year it appears we are more of a team that recognizes our roles in a much more cohesive way and we’re also much closer off the court, as well,” he says.

The All-State candidate-again-is also full of the knowledge of what it takes to win a championship in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools(TAPPS) as he took advantage of another chance again after the black and blue clad Warriors of NCA survived a very physical defensive battle with Vanguard Prep Academy of Waco, taking home in the process a 42-28, 2A title victory. The battle transpired at Nolan Catholic High in Fort Worth last Saturday afternoon and thanks to Patureau’s Warrior game high 15 points, just like DEATH and TAXES, the 35-2 club had won another state crown with inevitable certainty, their third in a row. To get there though, NCA had to survive a State Semi with Texoma Christian ofSherman.

Even though the Forest Cove neighborhood based team fell behind by 10 points in the third quarter after leading by eight at the half, they were still able to rally and win, 64-61 in their closest game of the season. Patureau led the team with 26 points while Jake Strother chipped in with 19 points. That was set up after NCA left their marks all over San Antonio Lutheran Academy’s Mustangs, 76-40 in the 2A Region Three Championship game Saturday, February, 26th at Houston Christian Academy.

Warriors Win “Three-peat” in Rough and Tumble Final

While happy about that win, Patureau seemed just as interested though in his near triple(stat categories)- double(digits equaling amounts of ten or more in each category) in the ballgame, missing only by one assist. Make no mistake about it though, after he went the first six minutes and ten seconds of the game without scoring thanks to a cold outside jump-shooting performance, he turned things around quickly offensively with driving layups and with clever ball distribution. After finding the open man with a variety of “Larry Bird-esque” passes, NCA opened up what had been a close 14-10 end of first quarter lead. They used Patureau’s dishing to hammer home a 10-2 run which contained inside it seven

consecutive NCA points. Warrior Joe Ashworth joined Brian Goll and Jake Strother with a combined trio of three-point righthand corner “bombs” to expand a narrow lead of six points, to one of fourteen , 31-17, all in a span of a minute and a half midway in the second quarter, and for all intents and purposes the game was over.

All told, NCA had another productive second quarter in this year’s playoffs, something that was beginning to be a habit. The 26-13 demolition which gave the Warriors a 40-23 halftime lead over the white, maroon and gold clad Mustangs from the Alamo city though was still no match for the 33-3 second frame whipping the team gave outmanned Alvin Living

they didn’t before, found a new-found respect for the Panthers in white. The Coogs also learned to pay attention with reverence to Justin Chandler. Off the bench right away, Chandler stayed in for most of the game and turned in a monstrous 24 point, 27 rebound night. His touch around the basket portends of a 2011-12 season potential All-State berth. Outgoing point guard, Adrian Johnson added 18 points for Park, who survived a cold night of outside shooting, to mostly stay tightly bunched with LM in the ballgame. As the season now comes to a close, one thing is for sure, it will never be forgotten, because oh yes, Park stacked up very well in 2010-11.

They also stacked up pretty well after their sporadically physical 55-54 win over Beaumont Ozen March, 2nd at Summer Creek High. Justin Chandler’s muscle-leaning baseline bank shot layup went in with 22 seconds left in overtime number one and the Panthers in white and

All Signs Pointed to Sweet Sixteen Season for K-Park Boys

About a month ago, Dominic Amorosa the Head Coach of the Kingwood Park Boys basketball team put up a simple request.

“I put it up (a sign) showing that our immediate goal for the season was to reach the Regional Quarterfinals and since we had accomplished that (before the Ozen game), we could then see how we stacked up against the elite teams in our area,” Amorosa says.

Even though their Region 3-4A, 59-50 Semifinal loss to La Marque’s gold and blue clad Cougars, stopped the basketball season for K-Park, it didn’t dampen the accomplishment of going where no KP basketball squad, male or female , had gone before- the “Sweet Sixteen”.

It was just too much Julien Lewis, the U. Texas bound La Marque star, in the second half, that prevented the Panthers from moving to the round of eight. His 17 second half points- 24 in the game- made up for a lackluster first half. It was lacking in content thanks to a stifling KP defensive effort. Offensively, it was Lewis second half seven point explosion during a four minute late third quarter Cougar run of 12-6 that put the game in La Marque’s control. KP tried to comeback but with the time running down, was forced to foul on defense and throw up low percentage three pointers on offense, and the lead grew again all the way to the final conclusion.

For K-Park,the fine 26-13, 18-4A second place finish, was punctuated by a gritty performance in the Region semi. La Marque knew they were in a tough battle and they certainly, if

blue were down to their last chance. When the ten footer in the lane by Ozen’s David Green was no good with just over three seconds left, and the resulting rebound was slapped away from the paint, all KP had to do was corral the loose ball and loop it down court away from any Ozen second chance. The Forest Green and Black did just that and the season ended with a whimper for the Beaumont school.

K-Park had withstood an early Ozen lead using a total of five quick points by senior guards Adrian Johnson and Chris Smith to wipe out what had been a 17-12 late second period lead. Even with Ozen hitting a three pointer at the halftime buzzer, it still didn’t seem as if they had the momentum back. Why? They never really had it when they were building their earlier seven and eight point leads, because they failed to make the plays they needed to put the

Stones in the bi-district game the week before. They also added a 10-2 second stanza defensive shutdown performance in the TAPPS Final this past weekend.

When the final dust had settled at the Regional, NCA had coasted to a much more convincing region three win than last year’s single digit affair with Victoria Faith at Tomball’s Concordia Lutheran High. The “John Wooden of TAPPS 2A”, Warrior Head Coach Craig Moore was able to clear his bench this time and introduce a much younger set of players out on the floor in the process as the clock salted away the last five minutes for the champs.

Moore was also able to explain a big reason why his team once again made it to the TAPPS Final Four stage. ”It’s defense they were finally playing it like I wanted them to after working on it so hard in practice over the last several months, finally getting the message,” the coach says.

And it was also a team that could beat anyone in so many ways. Outside with threes from Ashworth, Goll and Strother or inside with points from Patureau, and Strother, and physical play from Jacob Vandergrifft and Tyler Bratton, either way the opponent picks its poison. There is also the matter of that defense led by the sandpaper defensive personality of the guy who does all the not so little physical things for NCA- Bratton. He along with Vandergrifft also helped to control the boards which got the team moving into their devastating fast-break. Of course, Chris Patureau was also responsible for rebounding and once again this year he turned in a double digit per game average in that department. He also turned in that near triple-double with 25 points, 12 boards, and nine assists, despite leaving the game well before the bitter end for SA Lutheran. Strother led all scorers with 26 markers while Goll finished with 12 points, all of them three pointers from the field.

It wasn’t the end for NCA however, as they used what back to back winning Coach Moore called “championship saving defense” and salvaged the title a weekend later, on a day in Ft. Worth where two Warriors ended up with injuries. Bowed but not bloodied, they fought on and landed the “three-peat” in Patureau’s last game at NCA. Chris who finished the

season averaging a double-double, scoring a twenty points plus per game average; was joined on the All-Tourney team by fellow Warriors: Tyler Bratton-for his incredible lock down defense- and Jake Strother- for his offense. It was Strother who had fought foul trouble during the championship game, who summed it up best.

Humble Controls Road Tilt with C.E. King Loses Tough One to Nederland

March 10, 2011HighPointsMagazine.com

The first year of 4A sports for

Humble has been a refreshing wake-up call. Just like Head Football coach/Campus Athletic Coordinator Walt Beasley, Head Boys Basketball Coach David Martinez has seen a program go from a year in and year out borderline 5A playoff contender, to one of their new c l a s s i f i c a t i o n ’s dominant athletic powerhouses.

Once again, reawakening the echoes of the “olden days” of a school that once held 3800-plus students and saw its share of deep Basketball runs under current Kingwood Park Building Principal Larry Cooper and then later under former Head man Phil Eaton, Humble found itself with another longer voyage into the UIL playoffs. However, the bigger story may just be that this could easily become an every year occurrence.

First, the talent in coaching and players is there. With an enrollment that should hover around 1800 to 2000 each season, the athletic pool of a very large 4A school is there. Throw in Martinez who picked up invaluable coaching experience last decade at 5A roundball power De Soto High in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, along with capable assistants and you’ve got the makings of what used to

be found in places like the defunct Golden triangle area school Port Arthur Lincoln-supreme basketball dominance practically every year!

Unfortunately, it was a “Triangle” team that put an end to a sensational season for Humble with a 51-49 thrilling but disappointing-for the Wildcats-ending on March 2nd. Humble finished 26-10 while Nederland’s Bulldogs went to 32-4. That club squared off against Galveston Ball in the Region 3-4A semis at Katy and was soundly beaten. Meanwhile, for Humble Kyndhal Hill who fouled out late in the contest led all ‘cat scorers along with Chevas Wilson, as they tossed in 15 points apiece.

Humble earlier used its deep skill-set to turn back the hosting C.E. King Panthers, 75-65 in the Area Round February 25th. Thanks to an 18-4 second quarter declawing of the home blues, the Purple Gang was able to glide home in the second half, even withstanding a furious Panther comeback late in the game, and take the win. Tilton Johnson led the Wildcats with 19 points, while Desmond Smith with eleven and Andrew Turner with 10 markers helped Humble to move on to the next round. The Panthers, the 19-4A runnerup ended their year at 16-17.

Crowded at the Top- A deep Humble team took their hoop dreams to an 18-4A title. South-worth, Hill, Wilson, Boyette, etc. celebrated BIG wins. Hoop dreams indeed!

game away, and they failed to do so even though K-Park was struggling. An 18-3 KP run from the two minute mark of what remained in the half, and sheer rebounding dominance in the first five minutes of the third quarter, allowed the Humble ISD Panthers to blitz Ozen-scoring the first thirteen points of the third quarter- and build a 32-20 lead .

But, Ozen stormed back as KP began to miss rushed shots off of the club’s stalling, clock eating offense. When KP couldn’t build the lead any higher than seven points, 48-41, Ozen’s David Green and Joe Richards began to hit vital three’s including one that tied the game with just over two minutes left in regulation. They even took the lead on Green’s eight foot pull-up jumper from the left side, outside the lane with just under fifty seconds remaining in the fourth, but just 25 seconds later Kingwood Park rolled back with a Johnson reverse baseline layup, and soon after a Green miss, the game headed to OT. That’s where Ozen decided to stall-and the O-Panthers may have taken their own momentum away-something that Coach Amorosa was expecting according to Chandler.

“Coach told us they were going to do that and we were ready for it,” the vastly improving post player said.

In the end, Ozen was only left with what could have been and a 22-10 record.

While Ozen is the same team that Park dispatched of in last year’s bi-district playoff game and lost to in the same round two years ago, Crosby was a new playoff sparring partner. Although, the game held in Atascocita High’s gym on February 25th wasn’t that physical, the Panthers still completely controlled the boards and the inside paint. Crosby’s Keynan Willis who came into the game averaging over 18 points a game, got his share of points, leading the way for the red and white

Cougars with 14 units, but like his teammates could not control the season-best play of Chandler who muscled his way for 20 points with a deft touch around the basket for the black and forest green. “He is back in Basketball shape after playing Football,” Amorosa says.

The three-point shooting of seniors Will Wakefield who had 12 points and Tyler Pounds who chipped in with 10 markers also allowed KP not to let Crosby the 19-4A Champ, go on any long point-scoring runs. Instead, it was Park that wiped out an early lead by the Cougars. KP went on a 17-5 tear to obliterate a six to nothing early first quarter deficit. That lead kept the Panthers with most of the momentum for the rest of the game, even though Crosby was able to grab the lead infrequently throughout the rest of the contest. However, they could never build a large lead as every time Park answered with a game tying basket or a hoop to take the lead or keep the score close.

It wasn’t until KP fired off a 12-6 run thanks to slashing baskets by senior guards Chris Smith, and Adrian Johnson, and outstanding inside putback baskets by Chandler midway through the final period, that the lead began to grow for KP. By that time Crosby ran out of time and fouls to give as Park moved into the Bonus free-throw situation. From that 47-41 Panther lead, Crosby made a valiant comeback, but their 10-4 run was too little too late. The win was a triumph of team offensive execution over a one-man improvising turn by Willis of Crosby. While the Cougars did rely

on the senior’s outstanding body control and an occasional offensive screen, to get their points, Park used their motion offense and high-low post play to control the clock and the game.

Crosby ended the year at 24-13.

All in all, for K- Park it’s a new experience, going farther than any Panther basketball team has gone before, male or female, and the win against Crosby had set the stage for the matchup with Ozen and that subsequent victory which landed the Forest Green a trip to the Region 3-4A semis and the regional tournament at Katy ISD’s Merrell Center for the

Speed Killed - The very quick and sure handed Adrian Johnson (here against La Marque in the regional semis) was a major force, cutting or slashing to the hoop for K-Park. His backcourt buddy Chris Smith also hurt the Cougars.

always competitive,-three straight playoff appearances- ascending Park program. A program that before the La Marque loss, had risen up and moved into the “Sweet Sixteen”.

Compared to the loss in Katy, one might call that kind of season- a better “sign” of the times.

“I came here this year from New Caney High because these guys were expected to win and I wanted to be a part of that (mix),” he says.

Northeast ran their record to 35-2 with the win, a victory that was their 34th in a row. They were right in sync this season to make it a “three-peat” and six in ten years. Of course they were, after all, the “chemists” knew for sure.

Woodlands Historic Season Ends at the Hands of Number OneDespite six three pointers by their leading scorer, Nolan Cass, and his own lead-taking threebie with just under three minutes remaining in regulation, The Woodlands High could not keep their school record victory- the most ever- and loss- the least ever- season going.

It was 5A State Ranked Number One Garland Lakeview Centennial who used a winning three-pointer by Trelle Lewis with just over two minutes to go to grab an eventual 67-64 Region 2-5A Semifinal victory over the game Highlanders’ Boys’ basketballers. The game at Waco Midway High’s Gym was the last in 2011 for the 14-5A undefeated champs. TWHS finished 32-4 and 12-0 in the district. Lakeview’s Patriots rose to the State tourney one game later with a win over De Soto. The Garland ISD team goes to Austin with a 36 -1 record.

knew that the highest he could finish was third place in the entire state, not just 4A, for there is no Class 4A or 5A or any A in Wrestling. Everyone is thrown into the same pot and everyone must fend for themselves at the Austin ISD’s Delco Center. It was something that was definitely done on February 25th and 26th by Shewmake as the 130,down to 126, pound-group athlete won all the way through three matches total against a pair of early winner’s bracket losers and one of the late winner’s round defeated competitors. Unfortunately, after stymying the latter performer, Josh Mendoza of the Panhandle town of Hereford, 12-6 in points, Shewmake lost a close encounter for the bronze medal, 5-3 with Arlington Martin’s Keith Sutton. Cody was able to get that far after he won a first round winners side match with San Antonio Reagan’s Justin Sanford, 6-3, before dropping a 12-3 match score to Greg Barrera of the Fort Worth area school, Northwest High of the Justin ISD. Relegated then to the consolation side, he rallied to pin Alex Scheer of Garland’s Lakeview Centennial High, in the second round of that bracket, and then knocked off Thaddeus Brown of New Braunfels in a close 5-4 match to set up the battle with Mendoza. The youngster finished the season with a record of 32 wins and only 4 losses, included in that was a 4-2 win-loss mark at State. In other State Wrestling, Conroe’s Alex Powell in the 128-120 pound group finished fourth on the female

side. The other girls were: Roshelle Zapiain of Oak Ridge- 111-119 pound category (1-2 with the win in the winners bracket), and Rachel Bates of ORHS in the 139-148 pound group (0-2).Joining the ladies were Humble’s man-mountain Markese Christian who went 0-2 in the heaviest 216-285 category and K-Park’s Will Lorenz who joined his brother Brandon Lorenz who went in 2010. Will finished a fine year 0-2 at State. And his grapplin’ Panther teammate Cody Shewmake finished as the fourth best wrestler in the State in his weight group. By coming through with three straight wins in the consolation bracket and just falling short of a medal, it’s pretty obvious that for the youngster, it could have been better with the final outcome, but not in the satisfaction he took in doing it the difficult way and almost landing a medal, and that’s hardly cause for total disappointment.

Record Day for Mosley Meet

The Humble ISD’s Sam Mos-ley Track and Field Meet may never see a day like the one

experienced las Saturday at Turner Stadium.

Just looking at the stats doesn’t tell the whole story. Not only did King-wood senior Greg Lupton rise over the pole vaulting bar with a Mosley record 16 feet measurement, he also won the Boys event with a mark of 16 feet six inches. That mark en-abled last year’s 5A UIL fourth place finisher to win the competition in Humble. Second placer Reece Wat-son of Spring also jumped 16-6, but he lost the tie-breaker to Lupton. Both Watson, and Lupton set the Turner Stadium record, as well.

The day of overcast, cold, and damp, rainy weather also saw K-Park’s Shawn Barber break the Mos-ley standard with a 16 feet vault. He finished third.

However, the record setting num-bers Saturday weren’t the only first-time occurrences found at the Mosley. The very first Steeplechase races--featuring a water obstacle, and several wall-like hurdle imped-iments---were held at an Humble ISD meet. It was also the first time in front of the public that the stadium track’s fairly unique feature of a slid-ing door unveiling a water holding area--what is jumped over--that actually automatically fills with the fluid, was on display.

The historic winners are Girls di-vsion: Claire Hodges of Kingwood,

Splash Down - Amanda Walker takes the Bronze medal for Kingwood High in the historic first steeplechase event held at Turner Stadium in Humble. Here she is soaking her feet after splashing down when she jumped over one the race’s obstacles (white wall/hurdle in background). Turner is a rarity among high school stadiums because of its water pit feature. The “chase” features splashy obstacle that challenges runners.

and Boys bracketer: Logan Terry of Kingwood. Overall, led by its deep pool of tal-ent, Kingwood took both the Team titles, Girls and Boys. Second place in the Boys group belonged to Con-roe TW College Park who saw their outstanding miler Brian Gohlke take that event. KW’s Justin Brin-kley won first place Thursday at the Kingwood Park meet. Brinkley also had a good day at the Mosley, win-ning the two mile, 3200m run.

In the Girls group, TWCP also took second. Rounding out the local Girls side: fourth place- Kingwood Park; fifth- Atascocita; seventh- Summer Creek(first year as full var-sity); and tenth- Humble (out of 13 teams scoring at least a point).

Boys roundup: Humble and Atas-cocita in a tie for third; KP in sixth; and Summer Creek(first full varsity Mosley) ninth (out of 12 teams scor-ing pts.)

Turner will now brace for a col-lege/ high school meet, coming in April. Nothing though, should ever match the living history set at the Stadium on March 5, 2011. As for the Steeplechase- the people ver-sion, not the horse kind- well...

Right now, the UIL doesn’t have a steeplechase event featured in its post-regular season competitions. The “chase” has been a part of the Olympic games for decades. Youthrunners race 2000 meters(five laps around the track) while running and jumping through those occa-sional obstacles. At the Mosley it turned into a “chase” into history!

Baseball-( at Hargrave’s Al Spangler Field)- Summer Creek Loss 14-0(5 inns.-run rule) vs. Huff-Hargrave (6 wins- 3 losses) on Monday…..Note: Special fund raising drawings were held and will be held during each of the remaining Falcon home games this season. Winners THAT THROW A STRIKE-or own the winning ticket and use a proxy fan pitcher- can receive a new Toyota automobile courtesy of-according to Falcon Head coach Tom DeBerry-Tejas Toyota in the Humble Kingwood area. There was and will be five pitch-a strike-for-the-car drawings for the right to throw to a wooden catcher cutout complete with a circular, slitted hole. If the winning participant fires the ball through, he or she will get the option to take the car or the money that the car lists on its retail price. The car is valued at or around $ 25,000 dollars while its list price is 17,000 dollars.

Also, there was and will be three separate drawings each of the remaining home games to allow solo participants to throw a strike for cash and win five thousand dollars. The

money from ticket sales to the games is helping Hargrave’s baseballers to raise enough money to complete the roofing and siding of their newly named Keith Foulke Batting Cages which are due to be finished in a few weeks. They are located adjacent to the baseball field. The next drawings will be held during the next home game against Shepherd on March 22, a Tuesday night affair. By the way Huffman-Harg.’s fine hitter Cole DeBerry will be heading off after the season to Lufkin’s Angelina Jr. College, to further his baseball career. Good Luck!

Tyler Smith of Summer Creek, one of the few bulldogs who had success on the mound in the game against Huffman Hargarve, Monday.

The “Keith Foulke” batting cages, currently under construction. (Above)

Can you hit this target? If you can, you could win money or a car (see below). It is just part of the clever ways that Hargrave is raising money for their baseball program.
