DeVos Urban Leadership is a national faith-based leadership development program for

urban youth workers in Christian organizations and institutions. Each year, approximately

60 urban youth workers from five select U.S. cities are accepted in the 15-month training

program. Participants are challenged by an intense curriculum where they to learn to

integrate “breakthrough leadership skills” into their personal life and ministry. After

graduating from the program, alumni are encouraged to work toward local collaborative

efforts that ultimately impact the lives of urban youth in their communities.

1.2 Mission

To make a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged, urban youth by investing in

their leaders. We are committed to advancing this mission while creating a context of

mutual respect for divergent opinions from within the community of Christian faith.

Statement of Faith

1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant

Word of God.

2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit.

3. We believe in the divinity of Jesus, in his virgin birth, in his sinless life, in his

miracles, in his atoning death on the cross, in his bodily resurrection, in his

ascension to the right hand of God, and his personal return in power and glory.

4. We believe that all people were created in the image of God, but because of sin,

have been alienated from God. Only through faith in Christ alone can that

alienation be removed.

5. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, which is composed of all

believers, both the living and the dead.

6. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the

Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

7. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved

unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of

condemnation.

1.3 History

In 1995, Richard DeVos, co-founder of the Amway Corporation, and his wife Helen

challenged their four children and spouses to work together to develop a philanthropic
