Principal’s WORDDear Families,
We have made it through the first quarter of the 2016-2017 school year. We have had a successful beginning and look forward to keeping our strong start.
As we reflect, we see our culture is pretty strong but we still have things to work on individually and as a collective body. Our implementation of Restorative Practices with our varied use of circles has contributed greatly to our cultural growth.
We have seen an increase in parental engagement and involvement. Your engagement keeps our scholars engaged for various reasons. All of these efforts add to our success as a school.
While our school was affected indirectly by the loss of Terence Crutcher, a KIPP parent, our social consciousness has been raised with the terrible loss from our KIPP nation in Tulsa. Please know that as a school and a region, we stand with our KIPP cousins abroad and here in the city. Please stay connected to know what we are doing as a school community to stand against injustice.
I am excited at what we have been able to accomplish thus far, and I only expect the year to even better.
All the best,
Dwight Ho-Sang

Explain situations (when it’s appropriate). Help the child understand the cause of a stressed situation. We often fail to realize how easily young children can begin to react properly once they understand the cause of their frustration. This is a very powerful tool that can be used to educate about the true source of their feelings and emotions. Talk to your children about their feelings about the stressful situation: (1)How the child views the situation/incident (the child’s perspective),(2) What the child feels (teach them feeling words….hurt, sad, angry, disappointed, afraid, etc.), and (3) What the child can do to appropriately deal with their feelings (talk, journal, draw, read, play, listen to relaxing music, etc.). (Adapted from Responding to the Angry Child, http://childdevelopmentinfo.com/parenting/angry_child.shtm)

Parent to Parent (Advice)
I believe my scholar’s teacher cares but I do not think enough time is given to my scholar when the work is too challenging. What should I do, as a parent?
Always feel free to reach out to your scholar’s teachers. The cell phone system, email, text messaging system has been set up for the scholars and for you, the parent, as well. Find out from the teacher what you can do at home to support your scholar with review and strengthening of basic skills. Attend conferences, academic nights, tutorials. Use the online resources provided by the school.
Restorative Practices Tip
When having a family discussion, use some of the same principles that are used in school circles. Use a talking piece to determine who the only speaker is. Remember to respect the opinion even if you do not agree. When it is your “turn” to speak, explain why you feel the way that you do, not just do as I say. Vulnerability is acceptable and will build rapport with your child.
