Career Prep B – Online Course (WPHS) Student ManualEdmodo Group Code -- xbdswe
The Career Preparedness course focuses on three integrated areas of instruction
– academic planning and career development, financial literacy, and technology.
Mastery of the content standards provides a strong foundation for student
acquisition of the skills, attitudes, and knowledge that enables them to achieve
success in school, at work, and across the life span. As part of preparing
students to be college- and career-ready, this course also equips them with the
skills needed for business and industry, continuing education, and lifelong
learning. Acquisition of theses skills is achieved by incorporating content and
strategies that can easily allow students to meet the required 20-hour online
experience as defined in the Alabama State Department of Education’s High
School Distance Learning: Online/Technology Enhanced Course or Experience
Guidance document. This 20-hour experience is gained in Career Prep B and is
a requirement for an Alabama High School Diploma. The Career Prep B course
itself is also required for graduation. Career Prep A is a prerequisite for this
course.

Communication:
Best practice: Email me at [email protected]. There is also a link on my webpage #167). I need your email address so that any communication with me will not be caught in my SPAM folder; also excellent way for me to communicate with you should I have a question for you. (This only works if you FREQUENTLY check your email during the course.) If you don’t have a personal email account, you will need to use your school email address. (Please see me if this is the case, and I will show you how to use and access.)
Tuesday is your questioning period: Should you have a particular question that we cannot resolve by email, I am always available to you on Tuesdays after you finish your lunch. (Obviously, with prior notice, we can set up a time before or after school. For example, I can arrange to let you in the school between 7:10-7:45 on late start day (Wednesdays); you would have approximately 30-45 minutes for help.)
My web page (#167) is an excellent way for me to disseminate general info and messages that apply to everyone. I will try to use it alert you that due dates for assignments are approaching. You need to get in the habit of checking it and your email. The last Career Prep link labeled as Other is yours.

How to Submit Assignments in Edmodo.Follow the steps below: 1.Log in into your Edmodo Account.2.Select the Group from the left side panel and the find the Assignment in the
Group Post Stream, or you can view the Assignment from your Latest Posts area in the Post Stream of their Homepage.
3.Click the “Turn in” button located next to the due date to submit the Assignment.
4.Attach the work (if required) and provide a comment/message if necessary.5.Click on the “Turn in Assignment” button.6.Click on the reaction to the Assignment (the student must choose a reaction
and cannot change the reaction after submitting the Assignment).
Note: If you need to resubmit an Assignment, you must contact me first if I have already graded.
4
Submitting an assignment which requires you to upload a file:
1. You still choose turn in as illustrated above.2. You still respond in the box and add a reaction, but you also have to
upload the file. See illustration below.
Printed Assignments: Occasionally, there will be printed assignments that you will turn in outside of Edmodo. When this occurs, your inbox is located next to the printer in my room. Just drop by and place your assignment in the inbox for grading. Make sure you label appropriately (Name, Date, and Assignment title).
5
Blendspace: Occasionally a lesson will be included that has multiple parts, links or powerpoints. When that occurs you will access Blendspace. You do not need a login to see my lessons, only a link which I will provide. Blendspace is organized into panels which are numbered (looks much like Pinterest). To complete the lesson, you will need to follow the blocks in order (or if there are specific instructions, I will provide.) Work assigned from a blendspace page would still need to be uploaded to Edmodo for grading.
6
Google Drive: If you have a Google account, a good way to complete your assignments is to use Google drive. Just type drive.google.com in your browser address bar. You can upload word, spreadsheet and powerpoint presentations that you created in Word to your drive OR you can create also these documents using Google’s software in Google drive (works just like Office) and save them. This way you can use any computer that has Internet access to retrieve your documents and work on them without having to worry about carrying them around on a flash drive.
Online discussions: From time to time, and as part of the requirements of your 20-hour online experience, you will be asked to participate in online class discussions in Edmodo. Post your response to questions in complete sentences, unless otherwise directed. Use correct grammar, not texting language, including always capitalizing the first-person pronoun “I”. Avoid informal language – you are not texting your friends; you are participating in an academic discussion. When responding to someone else’s discussion post, make sure that you use the same standards as mentioned above for original posts, that you treat the other person’s post/answer/opinion with respect, and include no rude or offense comments regarding other students’ postings. Always proof your work before posting.
To reply to a required post, you simply click the reply button/speech bubble beneath the discussion or the other students’ or my post.
Grades: Grades are assigned based on quality and completeness of assignments. While due dates are assigned in Edmodo because the structure of this course is totally online and students can work at their own pace, they are adhered to very loosely. In order for enrollees to attend the Career Tech Center next year, this online course must be completed by May 10, 2015. The online course requires dedication and self-discipline to complete. If a Career Tech
7
Center student is unsuccessful in completing the online course this semester, that student will be required to take it the following academic year in a face-to-face classroom. Because there would be no room for an extra class in their schedule beyond the four core and career tech, they would have to stay at the local school one semester to finish this graduation requirement. Consequently, it is imperative that students not fall behind in assignment submissions and communicate clearly and often with the instructor, both by email and face-to-face.
Grades are composed of assignments, quizzes, and online class discussions. Point values vary. Scale is as follows:90-100 A89-80 B79-70 C69-60 D59 and below F
Honor Code and Academic Conduct: All acts of dishonesty in work are considered academic misconduct. This includes, but is not limited to
cheating plagiarism fabrication of information abetting any of the above
Plagiarism involves copying the words of any work published by another person, including text on the internet, and presenting that work as your own. Any assignment committing plagiarism or other academic misconduct will be assigned a grade of zero with no opportunity to repeat the assignment. Repeated violations will require that the student be withdrawn from this online class and take this course in a face-to-face environment with an instructor.
