Learning objective (WALT): use context and root words to define unfamiliar vocabulary

Introduction: What do you already know about New Year? Read ‘New Year’ for pleasure.

Read the text again and underline and unfamiliar vocabulary. On a piece of paper or on the computer, predict the meaning of each unfamiliar word.

For example: Your sentences should be as follows:

- Commemorate - I think it means …

- Tradition - I think it means …

Use a dictionary or the internet to see if your definitions were correct. If you were wrong, edit your sentences with the right definitions.

Introduction: Look at the Swirling Sunrise picture.

Then, you have three short activities to complete.

1) Answer the questions about the text.

2) As the sun rises James will be able to see more of the view from the mountain top. Can you draw what you think he will be able to see? Label your drawing using powerful adjectives.

3) Up-level and improve the ‘sick’ sentences. Can you add an -ing clause opener, -ed clause opener, drop in -ed or the more the more sentences?
