You will be working on three reading activities
Listening Where you listen to the article and answer questions out loud 0 Oral Reading Where you read the article out loud and answer the
questions out loud Silent Reading Where you read the article silently and answer questions in writing
(The following is an extract from the Certificate III Pathology Specimen Collection manual)

3 Silent Reading Where you read the article silently and answer questions in writing
Passage 1
Micro Urine Collection procedureThe presence of any renal or bladder infection is determined by the collection of a urine sample which is microscopically examined and then cultured Should a significant growth of bacteria be present when cultured antibiotic sensitivities are evaluated
Label a sterile jar before collecting the specimen to minimise handling and therefore the risk of cross infection A mid-stream specimen is to be collected to obtain the best results
Questions
1 What type of sample is required when we want to test for renal or bladder infection
2 When are antibiotic sensitivities evaluated
3 Do we label the jar before or after we give it to the patient
4 What type of specimen is collected to ensure the best results
Identification Source GDocument ControlFormsF1401-F1500 MXB215F1528 Page 4 of 10
Passage 2Micro Urine Collection procedure continued
If micro urine plus other urine tests are ordered together (eg Bence Jones protein MALB DPD cross links) separate jars are to be collected and the test other than micro urine must have marked in texta on the lid the test ordered This process is in place because only the micro urine is tested in the bacteriology department and the micro urine test must be fresh when tested
Questions
1 Where is the micro urine tested (Which department of the pathology practice)
2 What must we mark on the lid of the urine jar if it is not a micro urine
3 Must the micro urine be fresh when it is tested
Passage 3Micro Urine Collection procedure continued
Mid Stream Urine
Provide the patient with a labelled sterile MSU container and patient instructions for collecting a mid stream urine
Do not empty bladder for three hours if possible Wash hands If female and they have a vaginal discharge or menstruating a tampon
should be inserted after cleansing the genital area If the patient declines using a tampon please note in the clinical history that the patient is menstruating or has a vaginal discharge
Females should hold the labia apart while the specimen is passed Uncircumcised males should retract the foreskin during collection Pass the first part of the urine stream into the toilet Then without stopping
the flow place the specimen container under the stream of urine until it is 13 full then finish in the toilet
Do not touch the inside of the containerIf not collected in the collection centre refrigerate and deliver to the collection centre as soon as possible

Clean genitalia ndash women use sterile soap to clean the area surrounding the urethra Labia should be separated
Clean genitaliaMen ndash Uncircumcised- retract foreskin for cleaning
Sample collectionHave the patient void onto the toilet
Without stopping the flow of urine bring the collection container into the stream until sufficient urine is collected The rest of the urine may be voided into the toilet
Questions
1 How long before collecting Mid Stream urine is ideal for a patient to have NOT passed urine
2 What do we do with the first part of the stream of urine
3 How full does the jar need to be
4 If the patient collects the urine at home where do they store it until they can deliver it to the collection centre
