Ford Cove is located on the southwest side of Hornby Island off Lambert Channel. This small reach is shallow (less than 13m). It is partially protected from predominant southeast storm waves by Maude Reef and lies in the lee of Norman Point. Refracted wave action and swell may pose a concern for siting of operations. Suitability concerns include the public wharves and a fuel dock within the reach.

The northern portion of Mud Bay lies off Vancouver Island at the southern end of Baynes Sound directly south of the Ship Peninsula. Near-shore depths are shallow with maximum depths of 5-6 metres in the centre. The outer (east) boundary of the reach is defined by a shallow sill, 1.5-2 m in depth, extending from large intertidal flats at Ship Peninsula to the drying reef in the centre of Mud Bay.
