Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Market Forecast 2014-2024: Future Prospects For Leading Energy From Waste (EfW) Companies
4.2.2.2 Major Japanese Waste-to-Energy Projects Table 4.33 lists the planned WtE projects over the coming years in Japan. They are a mixture of
new plants and retrofits/extensions.

Although the market for new plants may be slowing in Japan, there is ample opportunity for
Japanese WtE companies to extend their production in other regional markets, particularly
throughout Asia-Pacific. Figure 4.36 identifies the high levels of WtE capacity already existing in
Japan.

Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Market Forecast 2014-2024: Future Prospects For Leading Energy From Waste (EfW) Companies
6. Expert Opinion
6.1 Keppel Seghers
Keppel Seghers is a global technology provider for the Waste-to-Energy sector. To date, Keppel
Seghers has implemented in excess of 100 Waste-to-Energy projects worldwide. Waste-to-Energy
plant locations include Singapore, China, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Visiongain spoke to Mr. Geeraert, Sales and Business Development Manager, in January 2014
and would like to thank him for his contribution to the report.
6.1.1 What are the Main Drivers and Restraints for the Global Waste-to-
Energy Market? Visiongain: Increasing levels of waste and urbanisation are commonly offered as drivers for the
Waste-to-Energy market. What would you say are the main drivers and restraints of the Waste-to-
Energy market currently?
Tomas Geeraert: The following drivers and constraints apply:
1. Europe: The main driver remains the landfill ban. The constraints include the greater focus of
re-use and recycling as well as overcapacity in some countries.
2. MENA and SEA: The main driver is environmental problems due to increasing levels of waste
and urbanisation. The constraints are:
i) Clear long term policy/ framework related to tariffs and tipping fees, allowing private
investors to setup a viable business model and allowing them to secure finance.
ii) Lack of experience on the government side with Waste-to-Energy, and a lack of clear
vision related to the business model (EPC, BOO, …)
iii) Lack of infrastructure for appropriate collection of household waste
iv) Negative public perception.
3. China: the main drivers are environmental problems and the 5 year plans from the
government. The constraints for foreign suppliers include the import barriers and the fierce
(price) competition on the local market.

7.3.1 C&G Environmental Protection Holdings Limited Analysis C&G Environmental Protection Holdings Limited is a comparatively new company to the WtE
market, signing its first WtE contract with Jinjiang City in 2003. Since then the company has seen
strong growth.
The company markets itself on its low cost adaptable technology, which has turned C&G into one
of the largest WtE providers in China. Its early move into the WtE market in China has allowed
C&G to quickly gain market share and mounting experience in the increasingly competitive
Chinese market. The current WtE projects C&G runs in China are contracted for between 27 and
30 years providing the company with a steady revenue stream. Additional plans to improve their
technology further, including efficiency improvements, will further their competitive ability.
A further boost could be when their WtE plant capacity reaches full. Currently, the plants are not
running at full capacity and are therefore not running optimally for investor return. When the plants
are using full capacity of waste, the company will be in a stronger position to further development
due to experience.
