How Sweet It IsAlan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
When we talk about the Summer (June) Fund Drive at WAMC, we all use a simple, descriptive word: “sweet.” It really was sweet.
Don’t get me wrong. Like growing up, drives are hard to do. They take a tremendous amount of effort. Our wonderful staff has to fill every volunteer shift. All the meals for have to be arranged. The very generous restaurants and caterers who step forward all feed a lot of people for no reward except our love and gratitude.
All the pledges have to be entered and all the bills and premiums have to be sent out. Speaking of premiums, the folks at the Boston Symphony and SPAC were generous beyond words and the wonderful Pete Seeger is giving us the present of a “Return to Peekskill” concert. Peekskill, you will remember, was the location of the infamous riots that took place when Paul Robeson, Pete and others went there in 1949 to give a concert. There was what amounted to a police riot as demonstrators were left unchecked, throwing rocks and other debris and seriously
July Programming NotesKatie BrittonWAMC Program Director
Changes are a comin’…
It’s July, which means picnics, outdoor concerts, and amazing new programming here on WAMC. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get right down to business.
We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be bringing TED Radio Hour to our airwaves. In case you haven’t heard of the TED Talks yet, here’s a little background: TED Radio Hour is a journey through fascinating ideas, astonishing inventions and new ways to think and create. Each episode includes riveting excerpts from the renowned TED stage where some of the world's deepest thinkers and innovators are invited to give the 18-minute "talk of their lives." The TED Radio Hour team takes the most compelling talks and organizes them around a common theme. But we don't stop with the TEDTalks. Host Guy Raz interviews the guests, delving deeper, dissecting the speaker's ideas and posing probing questions you’d like to hear answered. Topics the series explores include mankind's place in the universe and space, how the sounds around us affect our behavior and why there is power in failure. If you missed our first airing which is Saturdays at 1PM, you can catch the repeat broadcasts Mondays at 8PM.
Now for the sad news. After over a decade, The Health Show will no longer be on out airwaves. Our fabulous host and producer, Bob Barrett, has left us for the shiny shores of Florida, and after considerable discussion, we decided to cease producing The Health Show. We love Bob and wish him and his family the best as they sit on the

injuring some of the people who had come to perform or attend the concert. One friend of Pete’s told me that he is very emotional about this and I can certainly understand why. Pete is a stoic fellow so his gift of this particular concert is really something.
Modest and self-effacing, Pete asked his friend Lorre Wyatt whether people would drive relatively long distances to get to Peekskill. All I can tell you is that the phones exploded when we offered the tickets. People wanted to bring their children and their grandchildren to the concert. Many of them had tears in their voices. Lots of them ordered multiple tickets. Every pledge form has a colored sticker attached for each ticket ordered and some of the pledge forms looked like Christmas trees, they had so much color on them. Some callers said that they had been to the 1949 debacle or the ensuing concert. Many said that their parents had been there.
When people ask me what we have planned for any particular fund drive I always respond that we never know -- it’s always serendipity. That was certainly true for this drive. The first day was a disaster. There was an Internet outage at one point and we couldn’t process any online pledges or credit cards for hours. That was an absolute loser of a day, but the following day all was well and we had a record breaker. After that, the money just came rolling in.
The challenges that some very generous people offer up make all the difference during the drive. These challenges excite everyone and I think it’s fair to say that when we don’t make one, we are all disappointed. Luckily, our generous challengers often offer us a second chance, although not always.
The last day of the drive was really something. We had to raise over $100,000 and we really wanted to have it done in time for the beginning of All Things Considered. I don’t think we could have done it without the last minute help of “Mr. Big.” I can only tell you that “Mr. Big” lives in northwest Connecticut and can’t seem to stop giving to the people who live around him. He clearly loves the station and over the years has been incredibly generous. I’d love to be able to give you his name because people want to know it but he doesn’t want the credit. I just want you to know that the gift was real and we had absolutely no warning that it was coming but it did and it meant that the drive was over. He put $10,000 dollars on the table if we could make $40,000 and that opened the floodgates. The money flew in and we were saved, I tell you, saved!
Like I said, a sweet drive. - Alan

beach with fabulous umbrella drinks.
With the addition of TED Radio Hour, we have moved some other of our shows around to make room. The Capitol Connection will airThursdays at 3PM and Fridays at 10PM and The Best of Medical Monday will air Saturdays at 5:30PM, repeated Sundays at 6:30PM.
Also coming up this summer are the Tanglewood broadcasts. Our beloved BSO is back in the Berkshires, and the live airings of the concerts begin Friday July 5th at 8PM. The concerts are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, and Sundays at 2PM. Keith Lockhart will be back on the Pops podium for his 18th season, offering a season-long tribute to the world of movie music, along with programs featuring a wide variety of American musical styles, including jazz, bluegrass, country, gospel, pop, classic standards from the 50s and 60s, and show-stopping songs of Broadway and the American Songbook.
And of course, the ultimate BBQ day will be here and we’ve got a great day of programming to set the mood and celebrate our nation’s independence. On July 4th, beginning at 9AM, right after Morning Edition, we’ll meet Andrew Forsthoefel, who set out at age 23 to walk across America, east to west, 4000 miles, with a sign on him that said, "Walking to Listen" in Walking Across America ~ Advice for a Young Man. At 10AM, back by popular demand, we’re re-airing the Richie Havens Retrospective special. FM Odyssey brings us this rare, intimate, in-studio interview with Richie that recreates his five decades in music, digging deep into his catalog of songs with great music and stories. 11AM brings the annual Capitol Steps production of Politics Takes a Holiday.
At noon, tune in for your daily dose of news with Brian Shields and Midday Magazine. At 1PM we’ll begin back-to-back episodes of The Power of Words. The first will be a classic episode from the original series, and at 2PM we’ll hear Barbara Jordan’s 1976 keynote address to the Democratic National Convention, as read by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Barbara Smith.
At 3PM, Alan will have a sit down with a political mover and shaker on The Capitol Connection, and 3:30 will bring us local news on Northeast Report. All Things Considered will kick off at 4PM.
To end the day of special programming we’ll head to Washington, DC as NPR broadcasts live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol for A Capitol Fourth 2013. Hosted by Emmy Award-winning TV personality Tom Bergeron and NPR's Korva Coleman, the event features performances from some of America's best known celebrities and musical artists.
This year's concert stars musical legend Barry Manilow, who is back by popular demand following his powerful
debut performance on the show in 2009. It also features performances by Candice Glover, the Season 12 winner of
American Idol; country music artist Scotty McCreery; actor and singer Darren Criss; classical crossover star Jackie Evancho; Broadway and TV star Megan Hilty; and five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams conducting music from the Oscar-winning film Lincoln with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.

Teens’ Summer Jobs Can Be An Investment In Their FutureProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
Every year about this time, the race begins. The school year ends and teenagers find themselves scrambling to land summer jobs. It’s always better to start the search sooner rather than later. Particularly in today’s job environment, with unemployment levels for adults still at a high level, teens should look for every advantage they can find.
Once a teen lands a job, it’s important that he or she is disciplined with their paycheck. Talking with your child about saving and teaching them responsible spending habits could help put them on the fast track to becoming a knowledgeable investor, which can pay dividends down the road.
For many of these teen workers, minimum wage is standard pay for their part-time or summer jobs – it's their first experience with how much their labor is worth in the marketplace, and it is their first lesson in how much harder it is to earn money than to spend it.
With this spending money comes the major challenge in trying to avoid having your teen spend it all on video games and trips to the mall. Instead, try to get them to think about what they may need the money for down the road, such as college tuition or a down payment on a car.
Introducing the idea of saving to your teen can sometimes be a difficult one. To start, create a plan that has both a saving and spending component. Decide what percentage of each paycheck will go into a savings vehicle, and an amount that can be used for spending. You can then teach the importance of tracking their contributions and income earned in the account. Seeing how their money can grow will help keep them engaged in the process.
For younger children, you may want to encourage them to save by offering to match all or some of their savings account contributions. As they get older, an option is to introduce them to a Roth IRA. Since investments in the account fluctuate with the performance of stocks and bonds, a Roth IRA provides the potential to generate a greater return than a savings account.
Furthermore, contributions to Roth IRAs are made with after-tax monies, so savings grow tax-free. Roth IRAs also convert investment income, such as dividends, interest and capital gains into tax-free income. This gives your teen the opportunity to learn how their investment grows over time.
When it comes to the more tangible benefits of summer employment, teens are able to hone their abilities to better market themselves in the future. They may be young, but in a couple short years, they can illustrate in college applications the skills they acquired through jobs, such as commitment, leadership, dedication and initiative. With the right experiences, summer jobs can be an investment in their future.
