Background:

California iscurrently in itsfifthyearofdrought. Surfacewaterflowsaregreatlyreducedduringadrought,which isdetrimentaltothewatersuppliesthatareusedforagriculture,municipal,andrecreationalpurposes.DroughtsareabiggerproblemtoSouthernCaliforniabecauseagoodmajorityofitswaterisimported.Inthemidstofthesedroughtconditions,Californiawaterdistrictswerepushedtoimposewaterrestrictionsandpricehikesontheirrespectiveresidents.TheMesaWaterDistrict,whichservesVanguardUniversitydoesnotimportanyofitswaterbecauseitpumpssomeofitswaterfromanundergroundbasinandgets the rest fromthecountyswaterbasin. Though itdoesnot importanyof itswater, theStateWaterResourcesControlBoardmandatedthattheMesaWaterDistrictreduce itspotablewaterusageby20%. Inordertodothis,theMesaWaterDistrictimposedwaterusagerestrictionsandevenhadmandatoryirrigationmetershut-offs formonthsat a time (seeAppendix1.1 foranexampleof an irrigationmeter shut-offnotice from theMesaWaterDistrict). RestrictionsbytheMesaWaterDistrictonlyallowedVanguardUniversitytowatertheirball fieldsaccordingtothefollowingschedule(seeAppendix1.2foranexampleofanirrigationschedulefromtheMesaWaterDistrict):

Thefieldswereputinavulnerablepositionasaresultoftheirrigationmetershut-offsandreducedwateringwiththeabovescheduleforonly10minutesperstation.Naturally,grassbeginstogodormantafterenduringtwotothreeweeksofdecreasedwateringanddroughtconditions,thenitbeginstoturnbrownafterfourtosixweeks.Atthispointthegrassisstillrecoverable,howevertherootsbegintodiewithextendedperiodsofhot,dryweatherafterthegrassbrowns.Fromthenonthesoilcontractsandbeginstocrack,whichputsplayersatriskofnumeroustypesof injuriesanddisturbsplay.Crackedandunevenplaysurfacesnotonlyresultinseveremusclesprainsandstrains,buttheycanalsofurtherendangerplayersbymakingitdifficulttopredictthetrajectoryoftheball.

TheVanguardUniversityAthleticsDepartment,includingthebaseballandsoftballcoaches,statesthatthefieldsareinpoorcondition(seeAppendices1.3-1.5forapicturesoftheunevenplaysurfaceontheVanguardUniversitysoftballfields).Thecoachesreportedthattherehavebeenverylarge,hazardouscracksinthedirtandgrassofbothfields. Somecrackswereseveralfeetlongandwideenoughtotrapaplayersfoot.Thisproblemisespeciallyrampantonthesoftballfield(seeAppendix1.6forapictureoftheremnantsofoneofthelargercracks).TheseconditionsbegantoappearinJulyoflastyearwhenthewaterwasshutoffforamonth.Poorconditionshaveforcedtheballteamstopracticeonotherfieldsandopengrassareasthatarenotmeantforsportinanefforttoprotecttheirfieldsforgames.Doingsoreducestheamountoftimeandthequalityofpracticethattheteamsreceive.

Justasofrecently,theverywaterrestrictionsthatputthefieldsinsuchapoorconditionhavebeenlifted.VanguardUniversitycanonceagainwateritsfieldsasmuchasisnecessarytorepairandkeepthemhealthy.Evenwiththepositivenews,however,VanguardUniversitymuststillprepareforthefuture.Theliftinrestrictionswillmostlikelybetemporary,

as the aquifers have already been drawn from at faster rates than they can recharge. In light of the threats of theunfavorableplayingconditionscausedbythecurrentdroughtandwaterrestrictions,VanguardUniversityshouldconsideran alternative approach to ensure its athletic programs remain on the competitive edge. Artificial turf technology isimprovingandanastonishingrateandisbecomingverypopularatalllevelsofcompetitionacrossthenation.Becauseofitsproveneffectivenessinaridclimates,artificialturfwaschosenasthealternativesolutionforthisstudy.Thisstudyhasbeendonetodetermineifartificialturfontheball fieldswouldbeasustainableandeconomicallysoundsolutiontothisproblem.

Discussion:

SWOT (Strengths,Weaknesses,Opportunities, Threats) analyseshavebeenexecuted for bothnatural grass andartificialturf;therefore,thisdiscussionwillbebrokenintofourparts(seeAppendices1.7a-cfortheSWOTanalysesofnaturalgrassversusartificialturf).

Strengthso NaturalGrass

Natural grasshasauniquebiodiversity thatbreaksdownpesticidesandotherharmfulorganicchemicals,whichbenefitsboththeenvironmentandtheathletes.

Biodiversityhelps fertilize the grass andassure that the ground is porous inorder to facilitategroundwaterrecharge.

Natural grass is a carbon sink, which can work to improve air quality and result in coolertemperaturesonthefield.

Naturalgrasshastheabilitytorepairitselfifproperlytakencareof. Naturalgrasscostslesstoremoveattheendofitslife. Naturalgrassgivesplayerstherightamountoftraction.Whenplayerscollidethegrasswillgive

wayandfewerinjuriescouldresult. Ballresponseandfieldresponseduringplayarebestonawell-keptnaturalgrassfield.

o ArtificialTurf Turf provides a play surface that is usable year-round and requires no water (other than the

waterrequiredforanoccasionaldecontamination). Theincreasedplaytimemeansthatathletescanpracticelonger,andwithnodowntimerequired

afteryearlyseedingorre-sodding. There are lowermaintenance costs associatedwith turf because there is no longer a need to

frequentlyperformtaskssuchasmowing,fertilizing,andseeding. Turfismoredurablethannaturalgrassandstandsuplongeragainstcontinualcleatuse. Therearenopesticides,herbicides,orlawnmowerexhaustpollutionassociatedwithturf. Duststabilizationisbetterwithturfbecausetherearenodry,exposeddirtpatches. There is a lower average cost per hour of use because of the increased play time and

opportunitiesforrevenue. There are no elevated environmental, health, or safety risks involved with turf according to

studiesbymultiplecredibleorganizations.

Weaknesseso NaturalGrass

Themainweaknesswithnaturalgrassisthatitisdifficulttomaintainandkeepuptostandards,especiallyindroughtconditions.

Inordertokeepanaturalgrassfieldingoodshape,onemustmakesurethefieldisdesignedandconstructedproperly,maintainedbyqualifiedpersonnel,andassurethattheuseofthegrassislimitedandcontrolled.

Proper careofnatural grass is timeconsumingandcostly,but itwill all go towastewhen thegrassimproperlywatered.

Naturalgrassisalsoverysensitivetoinclementweather,whichwillresultinpracticeandgamecancellations.

Onesustainedrainfall,especiallyafteralongdryperiod,cancloseafielddownforseveraldays.o ArtificialTurf

Turfisexpensivetoinstallanddisposeofafteritslifespan. Anotherconcernwithturfistheheatislandeffectthatitcreates. Artificial turf absorbsheatand can result in surface temperaturesbeingmuchhigher than the

surroundingairtemperatures. Despite all the studies disproving any significant risk, there is still a potential of exposure to

harmfulsubstancesandchemicalslikelead,zinc,arsenic,orchromium. Thoughhighlyunlikely,thiscouldpossiblecreateahazardforasthmaticsorcreatetoxicrun-off. Turfgivesalotoftraction,howeverthatincreasesthechancesofcertaintypesofinjuries.Turfis

notasforgivingasnaturalgrassandwillresistthemovementsoftheplayers,whichcouldinjuretheirjoints.

Turfalsoheightensthechanceofabrasioninjuries,alsoknownasturfburn. Bacterialinfectionscouldariseduetothesyntheticnatureofturf,asitlacksthebiodiversitythat

breaksdownchemicalsandharmfulorganicchemicals. Thesyntheticfibersdontdissipatenoiseorlightverywell,whichcouldincreasenoiseandglare.

Opportunitieso NaturalGrass

Due to the nature of the current drought, water restrictions have placed heavy strain on thecurrentnaturalgrassfields.Therearenoopportunitiesatthetime.

o ArtificialTurf Turfallowsformorehoursofusageandincreasestheplayabilityoftheballfields. This allows Vanguard University athletics to get more hours of quality practice and allows

athletesandcoachestomaintainregimentedschedules. Artificial turf createsmoreopportunities for revenuebecausewell-kept turf fields canbe rent

outtooutsideentitiesforeventsandtournaments. Rentingout the fieldsoffsets thesteep initial costof the turf,andcaneveneventually lead to

profitsthatcanbeusedtomakeotherimprovementsaroundcampus. Threats

o NaturalGrass Waterrestrictionscuttheamountofwaterthatcanbeusedfortheballfields,whichresultsin

aninferiorplaysurface.Thisjeopardizesthequalityofplayandthesafetyoftheplayers.

o ArtificialTurf Boththehighinitialinvestmentrequiredandsteepdisposalcostscouldthreatenthefeasibilityof

installingartificialturfonVanguardUniversitysballfields. Anyvandalismordamagesdonetothefieldswillbecostlytorepair.

Recommendation:

After assessing both options, the strengths and opportunities associatedwith artificial turfmake it the superior choice.Thoughartificial turf costsa lot initially (seeAppendix1.8 fora roughquote fromBooneActionTurf), itsmanybenefitsquicklybegin to lower thenetcostwith thechanceofpossiblymakingaprofit. Themaintenanceand labor required toupkeeptheturffieldaftertheinitialinstallationareminimalandwillsaveVanguardUniversitybothtimeandmoney(seeAppendix1.9fortheCostAnalysisofArtificialTurfvs.NaturalGrassontheVanguardUniversitybaseballfield).Themoneysavedcouldbeputtowardsmakingotherimprovementsaroundcampus.

The ball teamsmay not favor artificial turf, however it is the smart choice in light of the current state of the SouthernCaliforniaclimate.Naturalgrassmayhavethebestballresponse;howevertryingtomaintainaqualitynaturalgrassfieldinthe midst of a drought is counterintuitive. Currently on the Vanguard University fields, natural grass has a hard timeremainingconsistent,letaloneresponsive.Therearemanyconfigurationspossiblewhenartificiallyturfingaballfield,butturfingtheentirefieldwouldbethebestoptionforVanguardUniversity.Thewaterrestrictionsmaybeliftedforthetimebeing,howevertheywillmostlikelyreturnsoon.Notonlywouldthisbesmartpreparationforfuturedroughtconditions,butthiswouldalsopreventVanguardUniversityfromhavingtopayforthedifferenttypesofmaintenancerequiredbythetwoplayingsurfacessimultaneously.

As stated, artificial turfs initial cost of $750,000 is much higher than the $350,000 it costs to lay down natural grass.Comparingthetwo,however,thesteepinitialcostofartificialturfisalmostallthatVanguardUniversitywillpayovera10-yearperiod.Theinitial$350,000requiredfornaturalgrassskyrocketstoover$1.3millionoverthesame10-yearperiod.Caring for an artificial turf field requiresmuch less equipment and labor,whereasnatural grass requiresmanydifferentmaterialsandtypesoflabor.

Inaddition to loweroverall costs, artificial turf alsopermitsmorehoursofusagebecause itdoesnot requiredowntimeafter themaintenancetasks, suchas reseedingor re-sodding, thatwouldbeassociatedwithnaturalgrass. Artificial turfalsoremainsplayableduringinclementweatherandwillresultinfewercancellations.Moreplaytimeandasmalleroverallcostresultinartificialturfhavingamuchlowercostperhourofuse(seeAppendices1.10a-cforanexampleofacostperhourofusebreakdowndonebyFieldTurf).UsingFieldTurfshoursofusageestimates,naturalgrasswouldcostVanguardUniversityapproximately$71.84perhourandartificialturfwouldonlycost$18.32perhour.Ontopofthat,thenetcostofartificial turf canbe reducedbecauseof thepossibilityof renting the fieldsout toexternalparties for tournaments andevents.

As aforementioned, there is a possibility to make a profit from installing turf on Vanguard Universitys ball fields (seeAppendix 1.11 for the maximum revenue projection spreadsheet for an artificially turfed baseball field). Currently,VanguardUniversitybaseballgenerates$2,500to$3,000inrevenueperweekendtournamentand$1,000permonthforrentingoutthepitchersmound.Artificialturfallowsformorehoursofplay,whichnaturallybringsmoreopportunitiesforrevenue.Atmaximum,VanguardUniversitycanhost52weekendtournamentswithartificialturfwhilestillrentingoutthepitchersmound.Ifyoumultiplythatoutoverthecourseof10years,arevenueof$1.68millioncouldbemade.Notonlywould thiswould pay for the turfing of the field and all of itsmaintenance fees, but it would also result in a profit of$874,089.90thatcouldbeusedtomakeotherimprovementsaroundtheVanguardUniversitycampus.

Total $52,500.00 $5,000.00 Maintenance of FieldTurf The cost of maintaining FieldTurf is minimal. The primary maintenance item is removing leaves and other debris which may stray onto the field. Removal is accomplished by a tractor-pulled vacuum system. These tractors do not remove the fill material. FieldTurf also recommends brushing the field (every 4-6 weeks depending on use) to redistribute infill material that may have migrated.
