Boy Scouts of America At DSC

By Jim Estes & Mickey Jones

Boy Scouts Troop 90 ended a busy year at DSC with their Christmas party in the clubhouse. The party started with the Court of Honor presenting the scouts with their awards and merit badges. Ten scouts received awards and the 35 scouts in the troop earned a total of 146 merit badges. The scouts thanked DSC for inviting them to use DSC as their home base. The scouts were made honor-ary members of DSC in August and commented on how fine a facility has been offered to them and the warm welcome they received from all the venues. Troop 90 used club donated money to pur-chase a new troop flag for their ceremonies. The troop then presented DSC with a plaque of appreciation. Sixteen of the scouts received first aid merit badges. One of Troop 90’s Eagle scouts who has reached his 18th birthday is training to be a fireman with the Rochester fire department. He is work-ing the fire department youth program and he will be teaching the scouts CPR at the fire department next year. December saw the scouts in the DSC camping area installing a fire ring and stacking fire wood for winter campouts. DSC is fortunate to have an active scout troop to share the facility with and is looking forward to a long and rewarding relationship with the scouts.

Cowboy Action By Jim Estes

The cowboys enjoyed a nice Sunday in November for the Thanksgiving shoot. Penny Ante treated everyone to a great Thanksgiving dinner while Camptown tallied the scores. J.J. Longley was the top DSC cowboy followed by Dar B Shureshot and Fraser Fox. The year is winding down, the work bees are behind us and cold weather is ahead. By the time you read this the last match of the year will be finished. There will be no cowboy matches in January and February, so plan to attend next years first match on March 20th. The cowboys will be having their Saturday committee meetings this winter and after the February 19th meeting a Range Officer 1 (RO1) class will be given. So if you would like to be a RO1 or need to renew your RO1 training for DSC plan to be in the cow-boy building at 10:30 am Saturday morning. In the movie “Castaway Cowboy” James Garner referred to Hawaiian cattlemen as Pineapple Cowboys. About the only part of the movie that is true to history is that a cowboy did jump ship and start a cattle ranch in Hawaii. That said the movie is still worth watching. How did cattle ranching get started in Hawaii? In 1793 captain George Vancouver presented King Kamehameha 1st with five black longhorn cattle. They were in poor shape from the long ship passage so the king decided to allow the cattle to rest and reproduce for 10 years unmolested. As the herd grew they ravaged the native forests then started on the crops and gardens. Stone walls couldn’t keep them out of gardens so something had to be done. The first horses were deliv-ered to Hawaii in 1803 as breeding stock. In 1809, 19 year old cowboy named John Parker jumped ship and hid in the tall brush as his ship sailed without him. King Kamehameha 3rd asked him to control the cattle population. He knew that he needed ex-perienced cowboys to do the job. He sent word to California asking for experienced cowboys to bring their skills to Hawaii. Many Mexican Vaqueros answered the call. The Vaqueros trained the Hawaiian men to be cowboy’s years before the advent of cowboys in the American west. In 1816 Parker married the Kings granddaughter and was allowed to buy two acres of land for ten dollars. By 1832 the Parker cattle ranch had grown to be the largest ranch in Hawaii at ½ million acres of land and 30,000 head of cattle. At that time the export of salt beef over took sandalwood as Hawaii’s chief export. Several cattle ranches fol-lowed. One owned by a woman named Anna Leialoha Lindsey Perry-Fiske. It was said that Anna would ride and rope along side cowboys, even help with the branding, skinning and slaughtering then change into a French cocktail dress to host the mayor for dinner. What about the pineapple cowboys, the Hawaiian word for cowboy is paniolo and a horse is called a lio, and no they don’t wear flowered cowboy hats. Most of the cattle ranches started in the early 19th century are still in operation today. See you on the range.

December Second’s 2010 Rifle Committee meeting started promptly at 7:30 pm. The repre-

sentative’s present gave their reports. Without any new members in attendance a vote from the floor approved November’s meeting minutes followed by a unanimous vote to adjourn at 8:14 pm. A grateful thank you goes to our Rifle Committee Officers for their dedication and excellent leadership in 2010. Congratulations also, on the unanimous election of candidates for the year 2011. Special thanks to Committee Treasurer John Meyer for managing our financials so well during his tenure of office. Welcome to Tony Monterosso the committee’s newly elected Treasurer. For all issue’s and reports please, see the Rifle Committee Meeting Minutes including financials.

Good news for 2011 from Jerry MacDonald, the rifle range has a new lawn mower with a

much improved ride than the old mower. Now that the hunting season is over, all Rifle Range Safety Officers can relax and enjoy the beginning of a new year on the range. New fallen snow, calm winter breezes and bright sunshine bring certain tranquility between shots of bull’s-eyes on targets. Let the January weather man be good to us!

The Rifle Committee is commemorating the start of the DSC’s 75th year (A Diamond Anni-

versary) celebrating at the 2011 New Years Day Blast target shoot. Join us in this annual Rifle Com-mittee tradition from 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon. Reactive targets will be available for a nominal fee. Let’s bring the 2011 New Year in with a bang! The Sixth Annual Poker Fun Shoot is scheduled on January 9th starting at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm best five card hand hits at the backside of the cards with seven shots win, nothing wild. Hands are $2.00 ea. after range and $1.00 environmental fee. All ages and members are welcome with rifles and ammunition can be provided or bring your own. The Ninth Annual Ground Hog .22 caliber Rimfire Rifle Shoot is planned for Sunday January 30th at 10:00 am till 1:00 pm. Adult fee is $10.00 includes environmental fee and may participate in the money pot for $5.00. Adult competitors please bring six two liter plastic bottles of diet soda to hang as your targets at 200 yards. Juniors (Fourteen years and under) pay the range fee to participate and please bring six sixteen ounce plastic bottles of diet soda for your targets at 50 yards. Shooters from last year will tell you that the targets really spin around fast and are very colorful when hit.

The Sporting Rifles are practicing indoors at the Basement Range building on Mondays at

6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The Junior Rifles are meeting at 7:30 pm on Fridays in the Basement Range. Open shooting on the outdoor rifle range is 11:00 am until 3:00 pm on Sundays until the end of April. Please, see the most current scheduled events list on the DSC web site or the Rifle Commit-tee’s calendar for daily additions or changes of range events.

Happy New Year to All!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and concern after the recent loss of my dear wife on October 29th, 2010. Thanks for the pats on the back and the offers of help. God Bless you all. Congratulations to Walt Woodard and his daughter Katie on the birth of a grandson. The little one has been named “Jack Walter” in honor of Grandpa Walt. We need more pictures Walt! My apologies to Paul Koehn and his daughter Shannah Adler. Shannah was “High Gun” in the Women’s league last month but was left out of the newsletter by mistake. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and enjoyed Shooter Appreciation day. More on Game Loads: I found some interesting shell casings in the trash barrels on our course. Some of the 20 gauge shells are marked Game load but they do meet the legal qualifications of 2 ¾” length, shot size (7½, 8, 8 ½ or 9), 7/8 oz load weight and 2 ½ dram powder load. These shells are identical to the “Top Gun” and “Gun Club” shells. We have no control over what the manufacturer chooses to print on the box or the shell casing but we do limit the powder load to 3 ¼ Dram equivalent, the shot weight to 1-1/8 oz and the shot sizes listed above. In the following picture, the shot weight of all of the 20 gauge shells is 7/8 oz. and the powder load is 2 ½ Dram. That is pretty standard for 20 gauge regardless of what they’re called. The shot weight of the 12 gauge shells varies from 7/8 oz to 1 1/8 oz. and the powder load varies from 2 ¾ dram eq. to 3 ¼ dram eq. All of these shells are legal.

Conclusion? Check the box. Check the shell. Make sure your shells are legal. We trust that all of you re-loaders are following the rules too. See you next month.

POLICE PISTOL COMBAT (PPC) Shooters, We will again have a Winter PPC League at the Detroit Sportsmen's Congress in 2011 on Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm. to approx. 9:00 pm. All shooting will be done on our Indoor Range located in the basement of the Shotgun Building on Dequindre Rd. just North of Hamlin Rd. If you have never shot PPC, come on down and check it out! The League dates will be as follows:

January 12, 19, 26 February 2, 9, 16, 23 March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 April 6, 13 PPC League Course of fire: Match 5 of the NRA course at 50 ft., using reduced B-27 targets. This is a 60 round course of fire. NRA rules allow .32 caliber or larger in a revolver and .35 caliber or larger in a pistol. Many shooters use a six shot revolver firing .38 Specials while others use 9mm, .40, or.45 caliber semi-autos. A minimum of 4 speed-loaders or magazines are required. The shooting positions used in PPC are: standing unsupported, standing with barricade support using first the left then right hand, kneeling, sitting, and prone. NO MAGNUM OR HIGH SPEED AMMUNITION ALLOWED. EYE AND EAR PROTECTION IS MAN-DATORY. SAFETY RULES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. We will shoot a total of Twelve (12) scores, with final League standings based on the best 10 of the 12 scores. Cash awards will be given following the end of the season and will be based on any points accumulated throughout the season. We use the Lewis system to award points, so shooters of all skill levels have a chance to earn points.

League fees will be $30.00. Half of your league fees must be turned in prior to your second (2nd) score with the balance prior to you shooting your fourth (4th) score. There is a Range fee payable each week of $6.00 for all DSC League members. One dollar of this will go to the fund to cover cost of getting the impact area cleaned. Non-Members must obtain an Associate Membership for $30.00, which is good ONLY for the duration of the PPC League (14 weeks). The range fee of $6.00 must then be paid each week, as do all other League members.

Smoking of sights can be done only in an area designated by the range Officer or League Director. NO dry firing except on the firing line with the Range Officers approval. We need shooters to make this league a success. The only thing we ask is that you give us a hand in setting up and cleaning up whenever you can. This is a good opportunity to get the necessary practice needed for the upcoming PPC Matches: Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Team Taylor Pistol Club Southwestern Oakland County FOP 128 Fenton Lakes Conservation Club Matches and dates will be added or deleted as information becomes available. Please share this flyer with your shooting friends.
